"Sunstone" is a name inspired by a long meditation from about 10 in the morning to about 5 in the afternoon that once I undertook while siting on a rock outcrop three-quarters up the wall of a mountain canyon.

I won't tell the story -- it's too complex to be easily summarized -- but the upshot was, when a few years afterwards, I at last got around to trying out the internet, "Sunstone" suggested itself.

Ignorant as I was at the time I decided on my username, I had yet to hear there was a real, actual rock called a "sunstone". But how fitting I should name myself after a dumb, stupid rock while imagining I was naming myself after the fall of late afternoon sunlight on the folded rocks across the canyon.

Which is more important to you? Your username or your avatar? If you had to make a choice to change just one, which one would you choose to change? Why?

For me, it would be my avatar*. I'm much more attached to my username due to its uniquity and personal meaning. While the English version might be common, one would be hard pressed to find another 'SalixIncendium' on teh interwebz (or anywhere else for that matter).

*I did try to change my avatar once. One of the moderators objected. So I changed it back. But that moderator gets to change theirs to whatever they want despite my objections, even if their avatar leaves me paralyzed with fear. :eek::cry:

Username is more important to me, but I'm not a fan of changing either.
Just gets confusing as to who is who.

Having said that, I totally understand people changing them where their names or avatars are connected to beliefs that have changed, etc.

Well...'totally' might be a bit strong. I endure it.

I am polymath257 in as many places as it is allowed. Fallback handles are polymath17 and polymath65537 (extra points for why those are special).

The avatar is expendable.
2^(2^n) + 1
17 = 2^(2^2) + 1
257 = 2^(2^3) + 1
65537 = 2^(2^4) + 1

Yep. Every prime that is one more than a power of two must be of that form. But those (along with 2,3,5) are those only ones known to be prime. The next in the sequence is NOT prime

For practicalities sake, my username is more important because it is the way people recognize who I am.

But my personal preference would be to keep my profile pic because the username was created at a time when it appealed to me. I more likely to use my real name as a username.

I change my avatar regularly so it would be my username, mainly because it's a pain. You lose all your history and you have to notify your friends of the change. I am not particular about my username otherwise.

We have a winner. The only known primes that are 1 more than a power of 2 are:

2, 3, 5, 17, 257, and 65537
Well, now all of a sudden, despiter ecognizing-ish the prime (I spent some time with them on a bus ride from here to Laughlin, AZ) I don't feel like a very a big nerd now because I did not know the power of 2 thing.
NERD!:p

I have wondered how many here remember my old name here, amd how many here there are still around to rememeber it?

You know I'm British because I am self-evidently a master at conquest through deception.
I can see it now. If we ever really get married, we end up having the cops called on us on our honeymoon. After they peel us apart for trying to kill each other, the cuff us, then they are having to pry us apart again because they cuffed us. Then because they're outsiders we dispatch of them, go back to trying to kill each other, and then perform certian activities. Activities that, should anyone bear witness to them, they will never know if they are acts of love and war or acts of love and passion. :D

Neither is important to me, as I could have chosen many for either, but the avatar perhaps indicates my feelings about humans in general (but not in particular), in that we should recognise where we came from and how we should treat all other life - hence the outraged/shocked expression.

The avatar is me :) and the username is my true middel name. So not much to like or dislike there :) it is what it is.

i'd keep the user name, i got lots of purty pix of my horse

Your horse looks like British tv/radio presenter Pat Sharpe
