I don't know why ya'll can't just look at the facts (that repeat and repeat and repeat) and just admit, "hey, this is who we are!"
Man, as your northern neighbour, I watch and watch, and can't figure you out in the slightest. Trump's asinine tweets don't faze his supporters at all. State Rep Candice Keller can say, "After every mass shooting, the liberals start the blame game. Why not place the blame where it belongs?" The post listed reasons Keller thought the United States is grappling with mass shootings, including "the breakdown of the traditional American family," "homosexual marriage," "fatherlessness," "the ignoring of violent video games," "professional athletes who hate our flag and the National Anthem," "the relaxing of laws against criminals," "recreational marijuana," "Obama" and Democratic members of Congress, among others.
Truly, I no longer think the US knows what it wants to be, except "great" as Trump trumpets...whatever the heck that means.
Wanna be great? Develop a "moral imagination." Try to see the world through the eyes of another, even though you cannot directly experience where they've come from. Sometimes saying, "we don't want you here," amounts to about the same thing as saying, "so go back and die where you came from." How does that fit with the values you suppose you have?
Sorry, I should stop this...I'm not American and have a very, very different world-view. But really, there is another way...
