Is Islam peaceful?

The Quran declares itself to be easy to understand. So if I think I understand it, and you say I don't, it would seem that the Quran is on my side. ;)
I wonder if you have hit upon yet another error in the Qur'an? If it is so easy to understand then why do so many of us misunderstand it so badly? Like, is there a trick to this? How high do you have to be before it makes sense?:p:D

I fail to see your point in the above statement.

It answers your questions..

"And what could the word 'naturally' mean in this context? You're saying that all the Indian people don't 'naturally' have the same gods as you and others do? Would not being a Deist like George Washington be natural? Were you indoctrinated with Islam from birth? What I'm saying is, how do you trust evidence from 'inside' you, when it appears contradictory to the reality of hundreds and thousands of gods?"

Recall I had concluded GOD must be ONE and have sent instructions to complex human beings. <<<< We naturally incline to this belief. The verse I posted from 7:172 resonates with the soul.

So we are looking for a revealed religion preaching strict Monotheism with a instruction manual that has to have been preserved. See where I'm going with this? <<< Rules out Deism and points to Islam.

Sura 5:51 - "Believers, take neither Jews nor Christians for your friends. They are friends with one another."

Sura 9:5 - "When the sacred months are over slay the idolators wherever you find them. Arrest them, besiege them, and lie in ambush everywhere for them."

Sura 9:29 - Fight against such of those to whom Scriptures were given as believe neither in Allah nor the last day, who do not forbid what Allah and His apostle have forbidden, and do not embrace the true faith, until they pay tribute out of hand and are utterly subdued."

Sura 3:118 - "Believers, do not make friends with any men other than your own people. They will spare no pains to corrupt you. They desire nothing but your ruin."

And on and on..... Read the book and you will understand Muslims, believe me. Why is it the Shintos and the Taoists and the Jains don't have a 'holy' book telling them to kill people living all around them?

Again posting random verses just shows the deceitfulness and dishonesty on the part of the poster who more often than not has an axe to grind.

Why is it the Shintos and the Taoists and the Jains don't have a 'holy' book telling them to kill people living all around them?
Why not place said people on a land rich in oil, gas, metals and precious minerals, then point out the value of resources amounts to Trillions of Dollars to the White House. I bet you they would be labelled a threat to World peace in no time and we could all sit back and see how they respond to invading foreign forces...

Here's some indications of how they might respond..

Tamil Tigers: Suicide Bombing Innovators

Myanmar proves 'Buddhist' doesn’t necessarily mean 'peaceful' - Macleans.ca

Looks like most people don't need a 'Holy' book to justify violence.

Hi I'm student from Thailand. Now I'm doing research. I would like to ask you some questions. Is Islam peaceful? Thx for you opinion

As others have answered, some are peaceful, some not. I always thought the matter of Islam being "peaceful" was beside the point. I would be more concerned about whether peaceful coexistence is even possible.

For those Muslims who aren't peaceful, are they being honest and sincere about their reasons for wanting to fight? Are they truly fighting for their religion, or are they just using the religion to mask their nationalistic tendencies?

If they're angry about Western imperialism and the history of colonialism in the Middle East, at least that would be something understandable. If it's just a matter of wanting revenge against the West over historical oppression, then they don't need to hide behind a religion to do that.

In order for there to be peace, someone has to step forward and state (coherently) just what it is that they want. If it's just a bunch of incoherent ramblings that no one can understand, then there's no chance for peace. That's the main problem that I can see at present. A lot of people in the West just see Muslims as raging, fanatical madmen - and for the most part, we can't really seem to get a straight answer from anyone as to just what in heck these terrorists' actually want. Because they refuse to tell anyone what their actual grievance is, and that makes it much easier for Western leaders to say things like "they hate us for our freedom."

Most of the Jihadi groups have given their political/religious manifestos. The problem is that most of them don't make a lick of sense even to other Muslims.

I know. It's just a lot of incoherent ramblings.

Because you don't understand the quran.
You know what?

If God exists, corresponds to what the Qur'an says about him, and yet somehow sees no need to make more of an effort to clarify people that they should know better than to rely on such a scripture, then for all practical purposes he has no business being called God.

More to the point, I fail to see why anyone would expect or want to offer much attention or reverence to such an entity.

Osama Bin Laden laid out in his letter to President George Bush....

Full text: bin Laden's 'letter to America'

I haven't read it, but like the majority of Muslims pretty much know about the main grievances.

It doesn't do much resonating with me. It's just the usual drivel. Sort of like an early Islamic infomercial, brought to you by, Allah, Inc.

Here are many English translations of 7:172 (*snore*) Yep, that Qur'an is a real page turner. <yawn>

al-A`raf 7:172

Yes Evolution theory is compatible with religions. The notion that one species of animal slowly transformed into a completely different species over a period of Millions of years is contested, even amongst the Science Community. Yes religions evolved too, starting with the first modern humans of our age, Adam and Eve, peace be upon them.
Evolution in any form is not contested in the science community. That's not correct. What is debated is some of the details of how evolution occurs and we're learning more about that every day.

Cool. Thanks for the pointer to that massive translation web site.

The difference in translations is significant for 17:104 al-Isra` 17:104

As far as I can understand it, they hate modernity and want to impose a way of life that's totally obsolete on the entire world. It's a longing for the "good old day" taken to an absurd extreme along with unreasoning hatred.

Along with a Hillary-esque sense of entitlement to boot.

Islamic Psychology

"Muslims acknowledge that we* are God’s vice regents on earth but reject the idea that we are made in God’s image. Muslims see us as slaves of God. Indeed, while Jesus deemed to call Christians His siblings rather than mere slaves, Islam denies that we should be called “sons and daughters of God.”

* - It must be noted that "we" used in this sense is meaning the righteous, or in the Islamic sense, the rightly guided (ie. good, observant and pious Muslims).

You of course mean a Donny-esque sense of entitlement to boot.

Ok, though the evidence showing 1 species transforming into another completely different species is very small if at all?

Dr. David Berlinski may as well be explaining the Islamic position:
Watch from 1:10

Here's a Muslim Scholar touching upon it:
