    I had a roommate few months ago, she worked at the massage parlor. The massage they gave was pretty good, a bit expensive for me though. The lobby room of the massage parlor was decorated with idols, and the idols were decorated with flowers, candles, food and incenses. One day I saw her preparing to go to work and I noticed there was a toy (remote control car toy) sticking out of the bag. I asked her “Did someone had a baby?”, she said “No, this is for a baby spirit.” I said “Baby spirit?” she said “Yes, we believe in baby spirits, we believe they can bring us more customers.” I was shocked to hear that. The first thing that popped in my mind was that psychology class that I took in high school, it taught me that there is no such a thing as bad luck, there is only skill and luck.

    So, what is wrong with those people who worship spirits? Why would anyone would want to worship spirits in order to get more customers? There are many massage parlors out there that are highly skilled, and have many customers coming in and out. Are they afraid of going out of business or something? What kind of a business strategy is this? It reminds me bit of a schizotypal personality disorder (SPD) where they appraise themselves with paranormal abilities but instead of appraising themselves they appraise the spirits. What do you think?

    Isn't it the same as people praying to god to get what they want?

    Either way, things happen, either in your control or out of control. You can only influence one and the other has to be accepted (obviously some people need some time to do so) and then move on.

    I always favoured Voltaire's view on luck. I'm interested to hear why you think 'luck' is a thing, but 'bad luck' is not. Even more interested to hear how that would have been a discussion in a psychology class.

    What is wrong with these people who believe in luck? Surely they are simply believing in a concept they think can bring them more customers? There are many massage parlours out there that are highly skilled, and have many customers coming in and out.

    It reminds me bit of a schizotypal personality disorder (SPD) where they appraise the world with unevidenced phenomena as a means of externalizing cause. What do you think?

    Oh yes. I remember our teacher asked us. What is opposite of luck? Everyone said bad luck. She said no, there is no such thing as bad luck, the opposite of luck is skill.

    Did anyone ask her to define luck? I suspect she was talking figuratively.
    Think of it another way;
    If you studied psychology, there should have been some element of studying/performing/reviewing papers or studies. How many of them included 'luck' as a consideration? Why?

    They are not good at logic or evidence.
    For example, many Muslims believe in Allah but not Ganesh. It has nothing to do with gods, they just prefer the human authorities that teach about Allah over the ones who teach about Ganesh.

    Not at all. The spirits, (some call them angels, some dharmic faiths call them devas) are around us all the time, just waiting to be asked to help. Too bad most people never ask them for help. The spiritual law is that they can`t help unless you ask. So when people don`t ask, they don`t get help. There are all kinds of spirits around, and lots of people make offerings to them.

    The Hidden One is The Giver of Life and The Taker of Life. He is The Doer of Good. The Hidden One is The Knower of All. Spirits are created and they are not the makers of order or the makers of beauty.

    I myself don't believe in spirits, and even if there was, why worship them, why worship anything when you and everything is One all ready.

    These kind of superstitions even exist in Muslims who aren't educated and it's nearly every tribe might have something like that
    But it doesn't mean that they worship them.

    Hmm. So, Heathenry has a special definition of luck AND incorporates wights, which I suppose are 'spirits'. Real Heathenry - Luck
