Still love your guns, America? Fourteen elementary kids and teacher killed in Texas

We were not a psychopathic generation , unlike the one that exists now. That's the main problem.

I disagree. Americans carry a lot of anger and that's a problem. I don't think it is only the new generation.

Lots of anger, lots of assault weapons = a lot of mass murders.

So yes to many guns is part of the problem. Thing is America has not had enough kids killed yet in mass murder to do anything about it, SAD.

The vast majority of Americans WANT some form of regulation for weapons. The alt right scream murder and claim they want to take all our guns. This is basicly saying do nothing, let the USA lead all nations for mass murders, and most are in public spaces. The right respond have armed police at schools, malls, churchs, bus stations, train stations, all public places. Well though out people. Is it any wonder the world looks at America and say what the hell is wrong with those people. Screw protecting kids, its more important to have everyone carry assault weapons.

And for those that claim background checks will solve the problem think again. This KID was not mental, legally bought two assault weapons and its a piece of cake to go and kill 18 children. Thats the problem. He sohuld have never been able to buy and assault rifle, thats the problem.

FACT If the US government wanted to deal with the problem they would. However NRA money and the lobby system is more important to them then protecting people.

And for the record I grew up with weapons as I grew up on a farm. I then spent 20 years in the CANADAIN Air Force. I am not American.

What you Americans do is talk it back and forth, a divided country that can't do anything about anything.
I don't know why this rant is directed at me.

Politicians are going to focus on the issues that get them elected. Gun control isn't the concern of the average American voter.

And that's exactly the problem in the US. However polls do show the majority of Americans want some form of stricter regulation. No elected Repl in Senate voted for what the people want.

Alcohol is legal. Guns are legal. Both can and do get misused

Question?

A person gets drunk, drives, wrecks and kills a family of six.
Society blame the person, not the alcohol.

A person takes a gun and kills six people. Society blames the gun, not the person.

What's the difference?

Wrong. Alcohol is also to blame, hence strict laws around drinking and driving.

And the issue is not guns, the issue is assault military grade weapons that are designed to kill mass numbers on the battle field.

It is a simple process to turn a semi automatic assault rifle into a fully automatic and have 30 mag clips that can be swapped out in seconds.

Republicans don't. They send their thoughts and prayers and get on with their gun rally.

And at the gun rally the pro-gun people will proclaim that because of gun rights we all have freedom. But they won't mention the 18 kids whose right to life and liberty was taken away by someone who had easy access to guns due to irresponsible law makers.

Well said........

Guns are inanimate objects. There are not alive. They are not possessed by demons or magic spirits. Maybe we can ask an expert if guns have free will and choice. Maybe we can preform an exorcism on all guns so they become safe from evil spirits.

It takes a human to aim and shoot a gun. To blame the gun for the human, is irrational and will never solve the deeper problem. More people are killed each year by motor vehicles, with cars smarter than guns. The modern car has lots of computer parts. Why not get rid of cars before guns since more life would be saved? The real goal is not about saving the most life from inanimate objects. That is a decoy.
I don't think so - given that most other means of causing injury or death don't have such as their main aim (unlike guns) - and hence why we treat the benefits of these being more useful than any deficits. Guns tend to lower the bar as to any enabling them to express their anger/hatred/whatever, and towards many more people than most other means do so, even if the more determined might find equally devastating ways to achieve their aims. Guns just are so much easier (and more convenient) to cause deaths and injuries.

Why do some societies manage to exist without such widespread gun ownership?

Well, you can begin by taking a few of them off the high-priority list, because when everything's a priority, nothing is. So,

-divorce -- if people want to divorce, then let them. It isn't necessarily "better for the kids" to have mom and dad hating each other day in and day out.
-creating pornography -- if there are people who want to earn money making porn, and other people who want to spend money to see it, why should you care? Do you care if actors want to make violent films with lots of killing, and others want to watch them? Why is sex worse than killing?
-drug addiction -- don't see why that's worse than martinis
-people on pharmaceutical drugs -- don't see why that's worse than martinis
-percentage of women taking antidepressants -- don't see why that's worse than martinis
-car thefts -- not good, but property can be replaced, lives can't
-obesity -- shouldn't cost billions to fix, as this is mostly a health education matter -- some good ads, and better informed medical profession armed with good educational materials ought to help a lot

See? Not so hard to prioritize, if you care about what's really important, not just your own peculiar moral bug-bears.

Depends on the person. For example people who lost loved one to drug over doses might want priority on prescription drugs/illegal drugs.

In 2019, 70,630 drug overdose deaths occurred in the United States.

If embryos were being shot, it would be different.

And how many in traffic accidents? How many in skiing mishaps? Will you outlaw cars and skiing to save them?

The differences here are that drugs, cars and skiing are all useful, but can be dangerous if misused. This is true of a great number of things in life. So we use them, but we try to teach and encourage doing so safely. And if done safely, they result in very little harm. Guns, on the other hand, especially assault-style weapons, are specifically designed to kill -- and kill in large numbers. If used correctly, that is what they will do.

@Evangelicalhumanist think about this, though. This country typically elects civilian leaders. And that leader will be in charge of a nuclear arsenal. Therefore, you probably want a leader-to-be that has proven they are capable of extreme respect around different human made tools. But if someone is elected who never could understand such tools, and learn the responsibility that such things would call for, then how do you feel about them now being in control of a nuclear arsenal?

Illegal drugs are useful? Well we better stop the war on drugs, not that its working anyway.

And since that person will be in charge of the nation's bank, he'd better have been a banker, and since he'll be in charge of the nation's legal system, he'd better have been a lawyer, and since he'll be head of state, maybe he should have experience being a king, and since he'll appoint a Surgeon General, he'd better have been a doctor.

I don't think any government is the answer to helping the needy.
It is possibly an answer according to Jesus in his Parable of the Widow's Mite if one actually stops and thinks about what is says in this context.

The democrats have created a system that teaches people to cheat for handouts for example.
Again, such an utterly dishonest statement, but you don't seem to care one iota about using stereotyping.

A reminder that I am an independent, btw.

Maybe there wouldn't be a class needing to cheat for handouts if the Republicans hadn't created a system that lets a handful of people cheat them out of billions in income by crippling the unions and impeding increases in the minimum wage. Many of those people seeking government handouts have jobs at Amazon. Starbucks, and Wal-Mart which pay too little for them to support themselves.

And many don't have a job but just leach off the government, maybe deal some crack on the side....
