Is this what America is becoming?

If these news are true, and it seems like they are, what in the world is happening to America?
What has humanity been reduce to over there? And most important, what do you Americans here in RF think about it?
As much as this kind of news disgusts me, at least for now, none of this will affect me directly since I live in France and over here we don't have this kind of insanity yet (we have others, though).

Sick US teacher has to pay for substitute
I doubt he'll get 20 years. I understand what this man was feeling and what his motivations were. It's definitely noble to want to keep people from dying in the desert and going out of your way to help them. At the same time, I also understand the whole thing about "aiding and abetting". I wonder if the main concern in this case wouldn't have been the provision of food and water, but rather a failure to inform Border Patrol about people who need to be processed and given health screenings. We need to make it impossible for migrants to try and enter the US via hundreds of square miles of uninhabited desert. This is one of the reasons I do support a border fence

There's a lot of dehumanization of migrants going on in the US right now. Basically their logic is 'it's like giving food and water to a feral animal, they'll keep coming for more.' Therefore we need to criminalize giving them life sustaining aid because we would rather they die than come here.

What? Me worry?
We are a nation of laws, and this man broke the law. The story obviously plays on your emotions, but this guy went out of his way to aid and abet these criminals.

He could have just as easily called border patrol immediately and have the illegals (Not migrants) picked up. Instead he harbored them for 3 days without calling anybody. That shows intent and frankly is reckless and potentially dangerous.

The only reason he was caught it was because he was observed by agents. I doubt he would ever have reported it.

That's why he's on trial not for giving food but for aiding and abetting illegals to continue on with their infiltration. The spin of a compassionate puppy dog is ridiculous in light that he had made no attempts to report the illegal crossing to the authorities. Giving out food and water in and out of itself is perfectly legal. Aiding and abetting is not.

Yes there is. The Dems are doing it the most.

Opinion | Congress, Give Trump His Border Money

Dems refuse to approve a 4.5 billion emergency fund to the ongoing border crises. 3.3 billion of this money goes towards food, water, and housing of migrants found in the desert in need of help. 1.2 billion goes towards more guards, shoring up existing walls, etc.

So yeah the Democrats are holding migrant lives hostage to play politics.

What a horrible way to see other human beings.

What about the second news? Sick US teacher has to pay for substitute . I just realized that it didn't have a title like the first one and I didn't make it very clear in the OP. Its about a teacher with a cancer that has to pay for her substitute.

We have 50 states, and some things must be left up to the states lest we wind up with a Roman Empire situation. Believe me, you don't want absolutely every USA law handled from Washington. California does pretty good usually, although it has its lumps.

We are a nation controlled by our greed. So we make a lot of very poor and toxic decisions, because greed poisons everything it touches. It's a contagion transmitted by fear; fear that the other guy is gonna get it all before we can get 'our share'. So wherever you're living, be very wary. Because it's a global epidemic and it's soon to be coming to a 'theater near you.

It's like saying to the coming locust swarm, "We're just being too greedy and selfish over our crops. Come on through"!

WWMRD?
This is in The Guardian and is reported exactly how I would expect The Guardian to report a story such as this.

I will wait until we see the verdict and the reasons behind it, I doubt very seriously he will spend much if any time in prison but we shall see.

If Jesus was a politician he would approve the 4.5 billion dollar emergency fund to feed, hydrate, shelter, and provide medical care to the migrants found lost in the desert trying to come into the U.S.

But dems are blocking the fund to play politics.Opinion | Congress, Give Trump His Border Money
Did you read the opinion piece you cited? It was actually quite clear in stating "There is a crisis at the southern border. Just not the one he rants about." Could that be part of the reason Congress is not complying?

You might just bring it down to something a little more familiar, you know, something like the troubled alcoholic on the street begging for money, which your heart tells you you'd like to give him, but your head says is only going to exacerbate the problem, buying more booze. So you offer, instead, to buy a burger and fries, and give him those, but not cash. And guess what...that's not what he wants.

Perhaps, for whatever reason, the Democrats in Congress just don't trust his motivation...

Wasn't you just preaching about how trust is essential to human growth and understanding blah blah blah? Yes it was.

How about you practice what you preach? Go encourage your Dem friends to support this fund.

This is an emergency fund. It's not for "building the wall". So instead of 3.3 billion dollars going towards helping migrants stay alive by providing food/shelter/medical aid. The Dems are happy to let them suffer just to not give in to Trump. Another reason I say socialist dems are full of BS, and this proves it. They do not care, or else this would be approved. Actions speak louder than words.

Sorry, accused falsely. I didn't say "trust always," I said I approach new acquaintances with the attitude of trust. How people behave can, of course, have an impact on that, and certainly I may cease trusting those who have repeatedly deceived me. I have done that even with those I have staunchly supported in political life.

I was, for example, an early supporter of Justin Trudeau and the Liberal Party of Canada in our 2015 election. And I remained a supported through several flubs since. Yet, just in the first few months of this year (in which we will have an election in October), I have seen that which has made me reconsider, and I do not think I will be supporting either the leader or the party this fall.

As to what I should encourage my "Dem friends" (I'm a Canadian, so don't have any) to back, I don't know enough about the issue to come down on one side or the other. I can only say that, as you pointed out, "actions speak louder than words," and Trump's actions may have caused some to distrust his motives...meaning that perhaps they don't even believe that they money will go where he says it will. After all, they themselves saw how he has disparaged, and tried to deny, funding support for Puerto Rico.
