Is the sound of God's name just as powerful as God's name?

Is it not the same thing? Or do you mean looking at the written name(s) of GOD as opposed to saying it out aloud? In which case saying His name(s) would carry more power.

Why would God have a name?
Why would an almighty God bother with an identifier that relied on pressure waves in a gaseous medium and the capacity of some obscure lifeform to detect and interpret these?

Use of pressure waves in a gaseous medium is how we communicate.

    As for His name..

Say, "Call upon Allah or call upon the Most Merciful. Whichever [name] you call - to Him belong the best names." And do not recite [too] loudly in your prayer or [too] quietly but seek between that an [intermediate] way. Qur'an 17:110

Use any name you like, as long as you are calling upon the One True GOD.

In reality God's name and the sound of God's name is the human perspective and not God. God does not have a name nor a sound of God's name. It is the inner spiritual communion with the Divine that is meaningful, and appealing to a more universal perspective beyond culture, human language nor images of the Divine.

When Moses asked His name the response was not a name, simply 'I Am' as though He would not allow anyone to name Him.

I do not believe it is possible to accurately pronounce God's name with the human mouth. I believe God did this on purpose so that His true name could not be blasphemed.

    Yahweh YHWH
    Jehovah JHVH

are as close as we can get, I believe.

Yes, the name and form of God is as potent as God Himself :)

Yep. In humorous terms, I was led to understand that invoking the name of god did this.

Dang. The link doesn't work unless you click the YouTube link in the bottom right of the video box. Booo!

This is the account and no name was offered by God.

The reality is the translation does not refer to a name nor the sound of God's possible names. I believe it likely referred to a reference in adoration of God and not a name, "Adonai" ("My Lord" is more accurate and not a name of God.

Except the names of God are cultural from the human perspective.

I followed a Guru from India for a while who taught me God's name. It was really just the sound of your breath going in and out.

Focusing on the sound of your breath is kind of peaceful.

If God's name brings you peace, is that powerful?

In many sects of Judaism, the names of God call upon the different aspects of the creator and there is even a hidden name of God. Names have power, wether it's the name of deity or man.

By the "name of God" are you referring to Jesus, or the Father?
