i find honouriums mildly interesting. In legislatures, everyone says, "Mr. Speaker". The Queen of England is 'Her Majesty' if talking about her, and 'Your Majesty' if directly. I'd be happy calling her Liz. The Pope and the Dalai Lama get "His Holiness". In Hinduism the syllable 'ji' is added as an indicator of respect.
Personally I find 'pbuh' just very similar to that. Until an Islamic person come along with a better explanation, I'll think it's merely a long held tradition.
