Why Does it Bother Some People?

I'd suggest that both groups take themselves a little too seriously.
If everyone adopted a heroic flying cartoon
avatar, they'd be happier & friendlier.

Here's a good one.....

Btw, I accidentally searched for the image of "underdong".
Don't do that.

Does it mean anything that I fly to the left,
while you fly to the right?

Why does it bother some theists that some people do not believe in god(s)?

Why does it bother some non-theists that some people believe in god(s)?

I don't know.

I don't know why it bothers some theist that others don't believe in god(s).

I don't know why it bothers non-theist that some people do believe in god(s).

I thought we in the west lived in a civilzed free society where people with different beleifs could exist together. But I guess not.

hmmmmmm........

what if a deity is removed from one on one communication?

do your god's give instruction and comfort?

Good questions!

I mean, (if real of course,) if they cared, they would, right?

I believe my God has, through the Bible. It's also in that same book (in which I was taught), where the answer is given why He (for the most part) has stayed out of human affairs, letting man rule himself. To me, the answer is perfectly reasonable!

I think seeing others without the peace and stability that only God can give is what bothers me in a sad kind of way.

But when He saw the multitudes, He was moved with compassion for them, because they were weary and scattered, like sheep having no shepherd. Matthew 9;36

I don't think it really bothers me personally.
Things will go on as they are wither belief in God (s) are involved or not.

If anything, it's more out of trying to figure out how and why people get continually wound up in some wacky beliefs and ideas and attempts to validate such things as being actually ongoing and true.

It's more disconcerting however when a belief in God ends up with people hurting each other or just doing insane stupid things which amount to no rhyme or reason or passing off things that are not the case such as trying to teach children in school subjects and ideas that have no educational value to offer.

Some folks just have trouble honoring and respecting cultural diversity

There is no duty for unbelievers to honor or respect faith based thought. Tolerance is what such people are entitled to.

I think the terms "theist" and "atheist" are pretty much worthless

Except when referring to people that do or do not believe in gods.

especially the term "atheist" because it defines itself in the negative.

That's what makes the idea so valuable. It's like law abiding citizen, which is defined as the absence of criminal behavior. Also clean, which is the absence of dirt, and healthy, which is the absence of disease. They're all pretty useful words and ideas.

I've yet to meet anyone - theist or atheist - that disbelieves in my gods

Glad to know you.

People can believe what they want, the problems occurs when they attempt to impose that belief on others.

Agreed.

It's fine with most atheists if, for example, the theist chooses to dip a chicken talon in goat's blood, hammer it to a post, and dance around it all night in the nude while shaking a stick affixed with jingly bells and howling at the moon if that is what centers him and gives his life meaning, a moral grounding, and a framework for understanding the universe.

Why would we care unless he does it loudly while we're trying to sleep?

The correct statement of individual rights is that everyone has the right to an opinion, but crucially, that opinion can be roundly ignored and even made fun of, particularly if it is demonstrably nonsense!” Brian Cox

"Ridicule is the only weapon which can be used against unintelligible propositions. Ideas must be distinct before reason can act upon them; and no man ever had a distinct idea of the trinity. It is the mere Abracadabra of the mountebanks calling themselves the priests of Jesus." -Thomas Jefferson

Peace and stability came to me when I abandoned religion.

I think that the fact that some theist get upset by nonbelievers is an indication that they have weak faith and require validation from others.

I used to think that as long as theists didn't try to force their beliefs into government that I didn't care what they believed in. However, I'm starting to think that people believing in fantastical claims without sufficient evidence when it comes to god(s) may tend to lead them to believe in other fantastical claims without sufficient evidence. The result is large numbers of people ignoring the reality of climate change and deciding that they can have 'alternative facts'.

Why does it bother some non-theists that some people believe in god(s)?

I have no issues with people's beliefs. I do have issues with how they use their beliefs when interacting with others both in their religion and outside.

For example

1. Why Pagan, pagan, whose traditionalist, whose not, and so forth.

2. Why invite christians to a christian website but then exclude JW and Mormons as "other" or non-christian yet welcome all who believe in christ.

3. Dont get me started with catholism

4. Political issues and ignorance of how one's beliefs influences others from the Buddhist who tried to convert me harshly, to the Muslim who fussed at me, to the pagan calling me christo pagan, to wiccan who is not treated like a real pagan (in person and online testimonies). From catholic evangalist to protestant ministers blaming all catholics for roman history. Bad experience.

I never heard of belief in god(s) make people see things black and white or an usual off shade of grey. I actually never heard that in religions that dont have evangalism. It members are less open minded than the every day american joe smoe.

Religion isnt there to make enemies or set yourself away from others. I didnt realize so much I read on RF I actually encountered people with the exact same mindset in person and I dont travel much.

Its probably more so conflicting personalities. I love catholicism but it doesnt fit with my personality and morals. I think when we find or live religions that work with us, other peoples religious and nonreligious beliefs shouldnt matter.

Its the people. I dont believe in god so cant get mad at him. Last one standing

Peace and stability came to me when I abandoned religion.

Well, I can understand that because I felt a lot of peaceful relief when I left Catholicism, Mormonism, and another very legalistic religion. But it does not compare to the peace, stability, love and joy I now have with Jesus, who is not a religion.

Pride mostly. At least that's what I felt when I use to debate a catholic friend of mine.

I'm confused as to why interpreted what I said as having anything to do with duty, or anything to do with faith-based thought? Besides, tolerance is being respectful. That some believe respect (tolerance, potayto, potahto.) is not a given is kind of my point. Some folks can't handle diversity well. Not everyone holds to pluralism as a personal value, so they get intolerant and disrespectful of anything that isn't in their "in" club.

Except when referring to people that do or do not believe in gods.

Yeah, but it's not even useful for that. Without specifying a theological context, or which gods are meant, it could be referencing literally anything (or even everything).

Nothing my eye, Something for sure
Everybody's selling something, God, the power of reason, and skepticism, a pair of shoes.

People want to live in a place where they are not the only ones with who they are.

I can empathize with non theists, and inclusive beliefs systems of theists where God isn't an ultimatum freak.

I can't empathize with non theists who want to make reality into one ideology is a one type of logic.

And I can't empathize with theists treating unbelievers, as if they are on their way to Hades.

But one things for sure, I prefer people who can accept people as they are, and not feel like they have to change them. And they can passionately hold convictions without getting evil, but instead live with compassion for people.

May every debate serve to enlighten, and may every cause see the light of truth. And may every different person find their home and place in the uniqueness of who they choose to be. So long as it ain't evil, let it be.
