Hmm... not sure how to take the Pope's words. Probably my experience with too many snide remarks from theists where it was immediately claimed by the person that "that's not what was saying!" when called out on it. But what I see is that he's saying that you're better off not believing (and therefore, by implication, completely lacking a strict moral code) so that you are at least not being hypocritical and can "get away with" whatever actions/words that would be hypocritical for a Christian. In being an atheist you are at least not breaking the moral code of a "real" Christian with poor actions/words. Seems like it could be a cheap shot to me.

So what is the difference between a christian adhering to the selectively watered down christian moral code and an atheist adhering to the moral code that helped build civilisation and thus allow religions to flourish a bastardise the moral code to exclude anyone not in their club?

Our brains are somewhat smaller than with Homo sapiens neanderthalensis but pretty much on par with the early Homo sapiens sapiens. The skull configuration that differs between the two is different though, with Hss having a higher forehead, which probably relates to having a larger cerebrum, even though it's certainly not true with the Trump supporters. [dang. I did it again!-- the devil made me post this!]

My point was that the Pope's words were possibly yet another attempt (possibly unintentional) at making the derogatory statement that atheists have no moral code. Meaning that he's saying "It's better to have no moral code (and be like an atheist) than to state that you have a moral code yet disregard it."

I would obviously argue that each atheist has their own, individual moral code. But I would probably also argue that so does each Christian - hence the perceived problem in the Pope's (among other people's) eyes. Catholic/Christian theists aren't supposed to utilize their own moral discernment, apparently.

So, to answer your question, the difference is what you sort of implied - the theist thinks they have "God on their side", and so their personal (and still individual) moral code becomes God's personal moral code. If you don't abide, you're out.
