Dove "Whitewashes" a Black Woman...

Meh I've seen plenty of ads (mostly "women's products") where one woman transitions into another. Usually with women of different melanin levels. No one cared before. It's just a random transition.

Wouldn't have crossed my mind, personally, but I'm also pretty race-blind. Don't watch ads, and I'm glad I've eschewed them from my life over the past decade or so.

Do you understand why black face is wrong?

Do you find these images of the same woman offensive?

What's offensive about blackface? Imagine you're from another planet...

Here is the explanation I expect you are looking for.

At an early age, I realized no one could offend me unless I choose to be offended. It seemed to me to be a better idea to not go through life letting other folks offend me.

It always surprised me that many, most people don't see this as a choice. Allowing yourself to be offended by what other people do means you are letting them control your emotions, your responses, your life.

So honestly, I don't know why people allow themselves to be controlled by images.

However, understanding there are a number of people who possess less control over their feelings/thoughts, there are some things we don't do to avoid the consequences.

Race, gender, cultural history all seem more a matter of circumstance to me than something I identify myself with. I feel a bit naive when it comes to dealing with folks who feel a strong attachment to these things.

I find it interesting you put cultural history on that list. How can one not identify with one's own culture? Do you consider yourself without a culture?

Pretty much. No sob story but I was abandoned by my parents so there wasn't a lot of cultural transference. And, as far as I am concerned what my ancestors/race did in the past has nothing to do who who I am currently.

DNA wise I'm Scottish/Scandinavian, so while I've tried to make a connection, just because everyone else does, it's more like roleplaying than any emotional connection.

My wife's family is Pacific Islander. I've been pretty much adopted by her family. I know more about her culture and have been surrounded by her culture most of my life. There's no racial divide. She also has a black Uncle, when we get together, we are all just one family. There is no racial identity or division. They've accepted me as part of the family, I've accepted them as part of the family.

I would imagine it would be pretty tough to work at an ad agency where you have to come up with some new idea for selling soap.
Obviously it worked.
People are reposting ads for a brand of soap as far as RF.
I would call that marketing genius myself.

As much as the racism industry would like to convince you that the USA hasn't progressed since 1963, we have.

On the serious note I get the criticism.

This commercial is obviously racist considering how Chinese view Africans, just as Indians who view Africans:

Dove on the other hand I wouldn't view it as such.

"We are terribly sorry that the back of our cereal box had a slightly darker corn-pop sweeping. this transgression will never happen again" (no seriously that actually happened)

Question...Are you just somewhat racially prejudiced?

I like the photos, but I find it more interesting if most people looking at those photos would reactively think the white woman is default and not the other way around. Or is it?

I think what's considered racism is really an issue of preference, and how that person is being viewed through the lens of arranged orders and designations such as the sequence of the photos and who people think the real woman is.

Your idea of racism is really wrong...

Wow. That's even worse than the Dove ad.

I must confess that I did get a bit of chuckle from the YouTube comments:

Racism should be I think just as it is defined:

prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against someone of a different race based on the belief that one's own race is superior.

Since I don't believe any race is superior, I think I'm in the clear. In addition I don't see anything in the original ad that implies one race is superior over the other.

Is this racist?

Skincare brand Dove lambasted online for ‘racist’ Facebook ad

I think obviously not the intent of the company. This was likely to show their product was used by women of all skin tones.

Would it have been better if the White woman had become Black?

I think it's obviously racist but I'm laughing...

My brother and one of his friends imagined a garbage commercial in which his friend would walk into the shower and my white *** brother would emerge......meant as an obvious joke.......about a bull**** soap that would wash away the black....but to see a company take it seriously.

I have to run this by my brother. They were thinking it would be a great SNL sketch but this is just ****ing garbage. I cannot believe I'm seeing this. They predicted this racist garbage over twenty years ago about a soap washing away the black....

Yeah......my brother and his friends had some demented comedy. I just cannot get over the fact that an established company pulled this ****.

edit: I seriously cannot believe this ****.

there Are many snowflakes on the right. but I don't see them complaining about soap commercials or whats on the back of a cereal box.

Even funnier than what I just posted......ta......****ing.........da!

Snowflakes are interesting because they are so individual.

Have you ever considered what type of snowflake you are?

I think it's really important that you do because once you conceptualize your hatred into a crystallized concept you will find your special snowflake on the back of a cereal box.

But gasp.........with a special treat inside.

A molded middle finger of Genghis Khan himself!

Mongol Invasion Peanut Butter Snowflake Crunch!

I don't believe it was racism either.
The company's goal is to sell soap, & make money.
To intend a commercial which would offend a large market segment isn't consistent.
Cluelessness is the better explanation.
