Leaning on God

This time tomorrow I'll be back in the hospital getting ready for my operation. I'm a small bit afraid. But whenever I'm sick, in the hospital, worried or afraid for myself or loved ones I get relief from leaning on God. It brings me closer to my God.

I sometimes get the impression that leaning on God is slightly frowned on in our secular world - why would God help you when there are people starving etc. etc. but I think that misses the point of leaning on God.

What do you think?

Good luck with your operation.
Not wishing to judge, but to comment, I think you have the right attitude, it is a time when you are not in control and so it is not a selfish request (which is the point I think when it can be frowned upon, such as material or sensual gain).

I wish you all the best with the operation Stephen.
and I see nothing wrong with searching for a source of strength and comfort.

Leaning on God even though people are suffering and starving is no different than wearing a coat in winter even though many people don't have that luxury. (IMO)

Good luck with your operation!

Well, don't get to caught up in thinking about it. Just lean on the members of the RF if that makes you feel better!

The doctors strategy about the operation won't change with your's.
And if God is your strategy and if that won't interfer with their strategy I think you're fine!

What do you think the point of leaning on God is?

Yes, I do think it's pretty ridiculous for people to expect God to heal them, when he apparently allows so many other people to suffer and die. But, that's not how I interpreted your "leaning on God". I took that to mean that you find the idea of your God comforting in a time when you need comfort; you are not necessarily expecting God to do anything-- he will do whatever he wants anyway-- but it is nice to know that he is there for you. I see nothing wrong with this, as long as it doesn't cripple a person's ability to meet his or her challenges head on.

That's right. God can be used as support, but in the end, he can't (and shouldn't) do our work for us. That would be akin to parents doing their childrens' homework.

Good luck on your operation! The placebo effect has done all sorts of wonders.

Leaning on God and trusting Him is the best and the right thing to do Stephen not only when one is sick but all the time because we are always in dire need of Him!

I do wish you well, Stephen. You are a courageous and gentle soul. I'm sure you will do just fine. I'll leave you with the signature of a rather thoughtful fellow here on RF, with one small addition.

Friend stephenw,

Leaning on God

What do you think?
Personal understanding is that THINKING alone brings in everything as perspectives and which leads to God / Satan. good / bad, strengths / weaknesses, etc.
In this case when your body is in the process of undergoing an operation the mind brings to its fore thoughts of *pain, death* or weaknesses and so to balance such thoughts the thoughts of God comes or leaning as you state.
Reality is that you are not the body and there is no death of *YOU* BUT only a transformation of the total energy that is *YOU*; and only in transcending all thoughts that life is eternal flow.

Love & rgds

WISH you all the best and a speedy recovery and also look forward to your positive responses after you body regains all strength after the operation.

Hope all goes well

The other week when I was similarly in for my operation I took a pile of Biggles books to read, I figured what was about to happen was out of my hands so why worry. I will be asleep, if I wake then well and good. If I didn't then I wouldnt know anyway. I did wake and now am much better, and I read 3 books.

Cheers

Thank you all. Operation went well and I'm on the road back!, I'm stiff, sore and my mind is even more sluggish than normal but it's great to have it over.

I woke up to the demands of the ward sister that I cease cursing :) I'm not sure why but that pleased me!

Thanks again :)

So did you remember to praise God for not sustaining horrible injuries during the operation?
