Worst Television Shows

Starting with...

Big Brother - exemplifies everything I hate about reality television - stupid and pointless, imparting no information to the viewer, nor is it fun, or interesting. Why do I care about what idiots think of eachother?
Two and a Half Men - blatantly sexist, lame jokes about all the different stereotypes dignified with the term character, and completely and utterly unoriginal.
My Name Is Earl - As a comedy, it isn't funny. As a drama, the characters are lame and stereotyped, and are all idiots. As a show trying to impart a "be kind to everyone" message, it's blatant and repetitive.
Neighbours and Home and Away - recycled plots, unchallenging, and any people with an ounce of acting skill are stolen for bigger and better products. It's teen angst soap drama at it's worst. The only difference between the two is that one is set near a beach, and the other is set in a suburban neighbourhood. Why does Australia export such dreadful television to the rest of the world?
Braniac - it's a British version of Mythbusters... except it takes the charm of the hosts, substitutes juvenile silliness instead, and asks the silliest of questions, of little interest or relevance to the viewer. Oh, and there is a severe lack of stuff being blown up, or destroyed in a number of creative ways.

I'll think of quite a few more - those are the shows on my mind at the moment.

I have a problem with the premise of your question, specifically, that anyone could possibly be in a position to declare what is a "bad" television show. Entertainment is a matter of personal opinion. The best anyone can do is outline what television programs that they personally feel are worst. However, even then, that's not what you're going to get in answer: People are generally going to nominate only shows that other people consider good; specifically good enough to be broadcast more than a few episodes. The fact that these shows were broadcast for any significant amount of time generally means that they actually aren't among the worst shows. The worst shows are the ones that are so bad that practically NOBODY liked them. So the only legitimate answers to this question, I feel, are going to be programs that the vast majority of us have never heard of.

This statement implies that the general television viewer has some standard in their viewing. I do not think that this is the case.

In any case, the length that a television show stays on air is not merely determined by it's popularity, but by other factors - the availability of actors and directors, episode cost compared to viewers gained, and so forth.

In any case, what is your personal opinion of the worst shows on television?

EDIT: Oh, by all means, put down any shows that got a cancelled run on television because they were rubbish. This would cheer me up immensely - I would have some evidence that there is a discerning viewing public out there.

Everyone has standards. Just because those standards aren't your own doesn't mean that they aren't standards, and doesn't mean that those standard are any less worthy of respect than your standards.

True, but the point is that anything that stays on the air longer than a certain period of time is necessarily disqualified for consideration as "worst". While programs can die quickly even if someone considers them good, programs cannot live very long if practically everyone considers them bad.

In any case, what is your personal opinion of the worst shows on television?
I tend not to dwell on the negative; if something was so bad as to qualify, I've effectively blotted it out of my memory. :)

i dont care how bad a sitcom may seem, id rather watch someone who actually worked to get where they are, than a circus of whores.......being whores.

There are some reality television shows that manage to rise above the mire. Survivor, for example, has people that actually have to persevere in nature, and build a camp, catch food, and so forth.

it started that way, but now its exactly the same as any other, half naked retards running around pretending to do stuff. who actually believe that their out their "roughing" it? lol, they have crew members out there, you think their actually living in huts too? or even tents? with all their equipment. im sure theres a hotel right off the beach.

I have no doubt that the camera crew have a decent job - they get to work in a paradise, and no doubt live in reasonable conditions - but the cast have a much more difficult time of it.

I haven't watched Survivor for quite a few seasons, though; I'll take your word that the show has gone greatly down hill.

i havent watched it either, just seen bits a pieces of it. here & there. i only ever watched the 1st season, then i realized "this is fake"

and as far as the cast actually having a hard time out there, i highly doubt it. of course i dont have any proof of that, but just about everything on tv is fake, why would this be different?

but im a huge cynic.

I find most American sitcoms to be especially aweful. Do they have a laugh track to make us realize it's supposed to be funny?

Reality shows are also, in general, beneath contempt. (Can't Donald Trump afford a hair stylist? Like, really.)

"Britney and Kevin Chaotica", some sort of show that followed them up until their wedding.

I hope that whichever Paramount (UPN) executive thought that canceling Star Trek for that steaming pile of crap was taken out back and shot.

Just about all reality TV shows. I don't care who'se dating who, who can live on island better, who can get through boot camp and who can't, or any other show.

All celebrity based shows. I don't care about celebrities. What makes Patrick Swayze's cancer more important than an average joe's cancer? The same of celebrity rehab. Having a camera on them 24/7 doesn't make them any more important than you or me.

And, just about most shows that are on TV. Even South Park and Family Guy have been loosing it lately. They can hit a home run every once in awhile, but for the most part they have rely too much on shock and not enough on actual humor. Cold Case and Law and Order: SVU can be interesting at times though. And there is always Ripleys (which is starting to relly to much on sex appeal) and Naked Science.
