Was Earth Flat?

Glaurung

Denizen of Niflheim
It must be murder to explain the day and night cycle.
There are two views. According to the gentiles, the sun sets below the Earth and traverses the distance underneath during the course of the night. (And across the sky during the day, obviously). On the other hand, according the the Jewish sages, the sun travels over the opaque firmament (sky) during the night and under it during the course of the day.

Any brain is more complex than the Universe.

No.

Hence, if Bob feels or thinks something, it surely can be a real thing because his brain is more important than the entire Universe.

For example, many say that Earth is not a globe but a flat disk. Why? People are not crazy.
The planet was a flat disk in the past, and people feel it through the "genetic memory" or "ancestorial memory."
More in:
Was Earth Flat?

God is Omnipotent. He changed flat disk into globe while Great Flood. OK?

Yeah, ok, sure, why not.

Did he also say "abracadabra" while doing it?

cOLTER: "If flat earth or the Israelites vastly exaggerated flood story wasn't in the Bible, then people would dismiss the stories as silly myths."
Now in 2022AD it is better? Book told people of BC era that Earth is Flat to be taken seriously. But does God considered that the Book will be read in AD era, on 2022 AD? What about us? Paradox. The solution: Earth was flat. Now it is not flat. Miracle.

Or people in BC were, you know... just wrong in the sh!t they made up.

Earth was never flat, man didn't know any better when he wrote Genesis.

Bible points to flat Earth.
At last you've said something sensible!

Yes, in the cosmology of the bible, the earth is flat, and immovably fixed at the center of creation (they didn't really have a concept that corresponds to 'universe') and the sun moon and stars went round it and the sky was a hard dome (the 'firmament') that you could walk on, and to which the stars were affixed such that if they came loose they'd fall to earth.

(You can check out the relevant bible quotes >in this list< I posted a while back.)

Basically, that reflects what the Babylonians thought.

No concept of gravity, orbits, the solar system, the nature of stars or planets, the nature of the atmosphere, no concept of deep space, the nature of light, electricity, atoms, and so on.

They were doing their best, but just to be perfectly clear, none of it is true.

The Church dogma is a fixed reference point. This means, that if John says that Bible is wrong, the Bible is not wrong, but John is blaspheming religion. Earth was Flat.
So you're a bible literalist?

Then I guess you go round killing witches like the bible says.

What is the opposite choice? Hell.
Hell is a fiction sold by medicine men. It originally meant death. Primitive man didn't understand death, they assumed everyone awoke in the spirit world, good tribesmen and evil ones. So they invented a hell place for the people who sucked during life!

It is better to think that you will never die. The atheism is hell of pain.

Physics has a story how point of zero diameter became planet Earth and entire Universe.
We are living in a fairytale. Here electron is both wave and particle. Here is God, angels, unicorns of the Bible.
Some things we can know about, and some we can't. I feel it's important to be honest about which is which so we don't confuse the two.

Because ideas of Atheism cannot ever be proven, then only two answers are possible:
1. God exists,
2. we do not know.
This means, that God must exist.

Are you saying that the idea that the planet was flat is a Church dogma? I’ve read more than one book on Orthodox Christianity written by Orthodox priests. None of them mention ‘flat Earth’ as a Church dogma. In fact, Orthodoxy is more concerned with living a sacramental, liturgical, and ascetic life than subscribing to a list of dogmas.

It is factually incorrect.. I.e. wrong. A fictional set of stories that represented the knowledge of the period. That knowledge was inaccurate. Some people are happy to accept thst fact some aren't because the fictional stories are what counts to them.

Builders built houses on "apparently" level earth. It's just a matter of scale even on the scale of a house there is a curvature
that's simply untrue. You are ignoring all other context to suit your bias for the context of "science". But all context is relative. And science is not the appropriate context for assessing an ancient religious story.
