Star Trek's J.J. Abrams: 'This film's not for Trekkies'

Gawd... it was terrible!

Lets see how many sterotypes we can fit into a single character!

That was when I totally gave up on Star Trek.

As long as they can keep it relevant and interesting I don't see why any series should perish.
But there's the rub, eh. When, exactly, was it last both "relevant and interesting"? My own thoughts are that Star Trek ran off the rails after TNG. I loved the original series, The Next Generation and most of the movies so far. The rest... Deep Snooze Nine and Voyeur... etc... seriously... sucked.

Because you may not personally like something does not mean it's not "relevant and interesting." Sorry for all the "not" words in that previous sentence. I, personally, believe DS9 was relevant and interesting.

Also, Trek has been off the airwaves for years now - why not give it a chance to be relevant and interesting again?

My fear, however, is rather than being thoughtful (which the best Trek was), they're just making a SciFi action movie and slapping Trek on it.

As a Native American, what did you think of Trek's portrayal of Chekotay and others?

I feel bad now - Chekotay was the only character I could stand on Voyager. It never occured to me that he was supposed to be representative of real Native Americans, though.

Well, there was the much-loathed Enterprise.

Has it really been that long? *has a totally non-functional internal calendar*

I loved Voyager... was probably my favourite series. Had a nice atmosphere (for lack of better word).

I found TNG a little odd in that, it's a ship of exploration and yet they're always relatively close to a star base or a friendly planet. Further, having families on a ship that regularly sees combat... what were they thinking!?

Voyager on the other hand had a great set up. They were no where near allies, no where near home and had to fend for themselves the whole way.

I found Janeway a little annoying at times, but the awesomeness of Tu'vok made up for that.

So *shrugs* I DISAGREE! *rides away on flaming motorcycle*

Voyager was the most predictable of the lot and cut the balls off the Borg.

The predictability made me feel relaxed.

Also, I found the Borg thing interesting. I especially like the one where Species 8472 rips a load of drones apart and leaves them all piled up in a ship.

I've always been way too much of a SF fan to get into Star Trek. I did watch the original and TNG when I was a kid, but that was before I understood what SF was. I don't know how the new movie will pan out from a science fiction perspective, but it looks like it will be a good action, special effects bonanza. Either way, it's got to be an improvement over all the TNG movies.

Yes but why does your opinion matter? What matters is if there is enough interest to sustain the franchise. Obviously there is enough to get the movie approved and if it does well then there is enough for it to continue. The fact that you don't like it has little or no relevance.

It's sad but many people wont understand what you just said. They will consider Trek to be the very height of SF. I've always considered it to be a political potrayal of a socialist utopian state that promotes non-interferance over active participation in life. But that's just me.

Still, I always enjoyed the Trek series because they were a view into humanities possiblities. I just ignored the lack of science or had a good laugh at it.
