How do you cook steak?

We Never Know

No Slack
Simple question for those non veggie cooks, how do you cook steak.

My method is a hot frying pan, a hunk of steak of your choice, (i usually use rump or sirloin, occasionally ribeye). Seasoned with salt and ground black pepper. Just a dash of olive oil in the pan, when it starts to smoke throw the steak in.

Cook one side without moving the steak for...

1 minutes = blue
1.5 minutes = rare
2 minutes = medium
2.5 minutes= burnt well done

For thicker steaks add a few seconds if you wish.

Flip the steak over and cook that side for the same time.

Take the steak out of the pan immediately and allow it to rest for a couple of minutes before serving.

There are other methods, grilling, oven baking etc, and that's what i want to know. What do you think the best way to cook a steak to cime out juicy and tender.

Over fire, mostly on a bbq, to medium well. Season it and marianate it, let it set for several hours before cooking.
Not a fan of pan cooked steak.

Rare meat? Not for me. But then I haven't had a steak in decades anyway.

It's possible to get trichinosis from eating under-cooked
beef if it's prepared in contact with pork or bear meat.
The worst case is if a bear prepares it.
So when @Wu Wei offers you a rare steak, run.

Well, upon viewing the articles cited (mine and yours) one has to wonder as to what cooking food really did for us as to progress. :grimacing:

Cooking was actually essential to humanity's progress.
Those who eat meat raw (eg, rare) are backsliders.

I suppose the ridding of parasites by cooking could have been a side-effect of cooking and perhaps not even realised by those at the time. But it could have been the other way around - cooking to do so and simply getting the benefits of cooked food as mentioned.

I sense a PhD thesis in your future!

I use grapeseed oil instead of olive oil (it smokes at a higher temperature) but otherwise I do the same as you--into the pan!

Lo!
It turns out that @Wu Wei does indeed prepare food.
You'll notice that his style of cabinetry is rather dated, so we cannot
trust that his sanitation is up to modern standards.
