Congrats PRESIDENT Obama

A leader of a country shouldn't be so arrogant as to say things like that though. No matter how "american" it is...

but then... maybe I'm just being to "inherently kiwi" to say something like that, right?
as dutch guy however, I agree with Father Heathen..:p

Obama obviously split his speech into a section for the americans and a section for the rest of the world. And face it, arrogant or not, america does play a big deal in the rest of the world.

I found nothing arrogant about that statement methylatedghosts. America being a largest economy in the world is a natural leader in the economic space and shortly all they have done is pull the world down to a global recession. His statement was to give hope to the billions who depend on a stable America.

I could not buy my first car because of a recession in America since no bank is willing to give me credit because of a credit crunch which is the result of huge losses after the fall of Lehman Brothers due to the housing crisis.

Somebody sold a house to someone who could not afford in a country on the otherside of the world and I cant buy a car when i can easily afford one. I never knew till then how my life was connected so closely with an American.

Which goes far to explain why I think Americans have a responsibility to ignore the folks in this country who say we should act unilaterally, with or without the cooperation of our allies, and in our narrow self-interest.

So you think the world would be better off with the UN running things Phil?

One world currency, no personal gun ownership, that kind of things?

Should we ignore people who disagree with you even if they are in the majority? :p

What random combination of misfiring neurons this morning led you to conclude that's what I believe, Rick?

One world currency, no personal gun ownership, that kind of things?
You seem to possess an amazing capacity to pick the ball up and run off field with it.

Should we ignore people who disagree with you even if they are in the majority? :p
I don't think you've represented my position well enough to know who all would agree with it and who all would disagree with it, my friend. But perhaps that's my fault for not warning you of the dangers of watching Bill O'Reilly and Ann Coulter sex videos before breakfast.

"do hereby proclaim January 20, 2009, a National Day of Renewal and Reconciliation"

Now all you have to do is show where he proclaimed it a national holiday. All I see so far is that he proclaimed it a "national day of renewal and reconciliation". That doesn't mean it's a national holiday.

And I, as the descendant of Eastern European Jews who have historically been the victims of pograms, et al, find bigots of the lowest order like Warren to be offensive. And I venture to say that gays and lesbians who have been victims of the vitriol, slander, oppression and violence of such bigots are equally offended.

Ok.... So your "offense" is based on the semantic definition of "lowest order"? Would it help if I said "low order" instead? Perhaps "lowest order just above the lowest of the lowest"?

Thanks. Stating the obvious does little to bolster your opinion here.

Are you having trouble reading posts? You're clearly having difficulty understanding what I actually wrote. Where exactly did I "claim that he [Warren] is as bad as they [NSDAP/KKK/WBC]are and were"? Where did I compare the atrocities of facism to Rick Warren?

Oh wait... I didn't. I implore you Elessar, please actually read the posts before you mouth off and make offensive claims that have no merit. It's rather offensive.

You said he was a bigot "of the lowest order". That, at least in MY understanding of the modern English language, means you are saying he is among the worst bigots.

Can you tell me what other great event happened today - Jan 20, 2009, to make a holiday out of it?
He didn't make it a "holiday." He is calling for Americans to start being more giving and working together - which is not about him. You're off to a nice start though. How's that Kenyan birth lawsuit coming along?

Define what you mean by a "socialist." If only Inigo Montoya were here . . .

I'm guessing it's "Commie, pinko, freedom-hating, religion-hating person who doesn't want anyone to make any money". Just a guess, though.

I was moved by Rev Lowery's prayer.Even though I felt like kind of the bad guy at the end with the "when white will embrace whats is right" part.

Are white people the only ones that ever do anything wrong anymore???

His promise to the rest of the world, something to the effect of "To all the other peoples, the governments watching right now, I promise we will lead again" left a rather sour taste in my mouth

It should leave a bad taste.

It's rhetorical garbage that will be forgotten anyway over the next couple of weeks.

But when you have a historic moment people tend to believe that anything goes and any naysaying, no matter how relevant, is wrong.

Heh.... Obama a Socialist. Wow. Honestly, between the whole "Obama is a Muslim and Obama is a Socialist and Obama is the Anti-Christ" rhetoric one would think that the facts would've settled that nonsense. Then again, those who claim he's a Socialist have little idea just what socialism entails much less what Obama supports (hint: he's a fervent capitalist).

As much as I'd love to see a Socialist in office one day, alas, 'tis not in the cards.

doppelgänger, I still have this vestige of hope that this is all an interntet parody and people like idea aren't being serious. ....sigh.....

I think he was referring to an old song in that part of his speech and wouldn't read to much into it except that there are still some grounds to be made in racial reconciliation.

Which is true but I have my cynical doubts that when most people heard that actually thought of those areas where institutionalized racism needs to be combated or if they thought of Michael Richards.
