Um . . . no. Could you at least read your own link, please?

"do hereby proclaim January 20, 2009, a National Day of Renewal and Reconciliation"

Can you tell me what other great event happened today - Jan 20, 2009, to make a holiday out of it? Let's see... Jan 20th, what makes this date special?

on Jan 20th...
Saint Agnes (pictured) was executed for refusing the prefect Sempronius' wish for her to marry his son. She is today the patron saint of girls, chastity, virgins, and others.

1793 – French Revolution: After being found guilty of treason by the National Convention, King Louis XVI was guillotined in front of a cheering crowd at the Place de la Révolution in Paris.
1919 – The First Dáil Éireann first convened at the Mansion House in Dublin, adopting a Declaration of Independence calling for a new sovereign state: the Irish Republic.
1948 – The Flag of Quebec, featuring a white cross and four fleurs-de-lis on a blue field, was adopted and flown for the first time over the Quebec Parliament Building in Quebec City.
1968 – Vietnam War: The Vietnam People's Army attacked Khe Sanh Combat Base, a U.S. Marines outpost in Quang Tri Province, South Vietnam, starting the Battle of Khe Sanh.

So... you are saying Obama wants to honor Saint Agnes? or was it the French revolution? Oh no - wait - he was specific about the year - 2009 - well.... why is he making a holiday around this particular date again?:D

Eat, drink, and be merry everyone, for tomorrow... well, you know the rest.

OK, OK, sorry for that. I hope he can deliver, I hope he is not a socialist, I hope he can solve the world's problems - really I do. I'm not holding my breath though, I don't think anyone could deliver what people want out of the pres. Poor guy. I would not want to be in his shoes right now.

I thought it was to honor renewal and reconciliation, hence why it's called "National Day of Renewal and Reconciliation." Personally, I think the day that 8 years of disastrous failure are officially behind us is worth marking and celebrating.

All these things... they coincidentally also can be used as symbols for renewal and/or reconciliation. (except perhaps the vietnam one)

So a national day of renewal and reconciliation does fit...

Sure sure, just like Castro called it “day of liberation” when he took over the country… just like China calls themselves the “people’s” republic… a rose by any other name would smell as sweet? Smell it baby, stick your nose in the air, and take a big whiff.
Yes yes, I know, I am in a mood.

Ok, I watched the entired damned thing whilst wolfing a bowl of Cheerio's with cranberry and pears.

- Rick Warren made me leave the room. A poor choice regardless of intent. I have no interest in anything the man has to say and can only wonder at the thinking of those who thought it would be cool to give him a soapbox.
- Next up was Aretha Franklin. Her singing was about as bad as singing gets though that could be the result of wearing a ludicrous hat that was perhaps cutting off circulation to her brain.
- Next was Itzak Pearlman, Yoyo Ma and others playing a dreadful piece of garbage by John Williams. In spite of their gifted help, the song was still a stinker. Who could seriously expect more from Mr. Williams though?

Eventually they got around to the reason why everyone had showed up and Joe Biden managed to come across decently, not stellar, but at least he didn't bugger up his lines. Vice-president Biden has a chilling ring to it, imo. Hopefully he isn't just bidin' his time.

Finally they got down to business with the coronation of BHO. I did giggle when he blew his lines, but appartently it was the other fellow who screwed up and that just threw him off. Understandable. All in all, I felt his speech was lacklustre and didn't actually have much substance.

Overall, I couldn't share the feeling of hope and that this was the man who was going to lead us to well... whatever... everything, apparently. I'll give him a couple of years and then decide if I am ready to sign on to his brand of snake oil.

The thing that stood out to me, is because of the huge amount of hope people have invested in Barak Obama, they stand a very good chance of being disappointed. I felt like I was watching a huge pack of lemmings ready to go off the proverbial cliff while chanting, "Yes, we can!"
I have to admit to watching the whole thing also at 4am. I agree with you largely especially concerning the speech. I would especially object to the expectation that job-sharing is an answer to economic woes. Also, Obama did not make enough of his "blackness" in the speech. That was left to the pastor and MC that preceeded him. He should have rubbed his history making election as the first black president in more, personally. This is the reason Obama is to date an icon. On the other hand, I thought his wife was magnificent, and Laura Bush suitably subdued. Images of Obama and Michelle walking the street on the way to the White House were magnificent.

Getting back to the music, I know nothing about classical music, but i think your criticisms of the classical piece are harsh. It wasn't a bad attempt to do something thematic/emblematic without sounding overproduced I thought. Much worse is that ridiculous "presidential waltz" they play whenever the President appeared (especially for Bush). It made me feel like going out and sticking my tongue down a garbo's crack (definitely in bad taste).:p

This is got to be a day remembered in history. A country which did not even allow people of color sit in the front seats of a bus as now a black man sitting in the most powerful seat of the country. That has got to mean something and should be celebrated for its symbolism at the most. Whether he performs or not this fact will not change.

I wish Obama well, and hope that he does carry out the big task he has put for himself and the country. A better America is not only good for Americans but the rest of the world as well. We have a saying here, if America' sneezes the world catches cold.

Sour grapes just because there is no longer a Christian Fundamentalist puppet at the reins.

Yeah, congratulations you guys..

Wasn't the best speech ever, but he was charismatic enough..
Shame he had such a standard speech that I allready knew it before he started.. :p

Funny note, I followed the ceremony on CNN, Al Jazeera and the dutch channels..
It was like switching between patrionism (from the audiance, not the president), nagging about pieces he missed and should have said and cheers at every notion of alliance :ignore:

A leader of a country shouldn't be so arrogant as to say things like that though. No matter how "american" it is...

but then... maybe I'm just being to "inherently kiwi" to say something like that, right?

What does it mean when you say "Strawman?" Are you talking about the scarecrow from the wizard of oz?
Debatingerror:
1. Person A has position X.
2. Person B ignores X and instead presents position Y.
3. Person B attacks position Y.
4. Person B draws a conclusion that X is false/incorrect/flawed.

The concept was if Obama will be a good one. What you did is make him perfect (instead of good.) It's easier to refute perfectness than "good"..

But I don't really think you were pulling a strawman as you were not even debating in the first place..
