Are atheists right that the phrase "God Almighty" is a proper name, but simply the word "God" is a common noun?

It is used as both. "The Christian god is known as God."

I get frightened when I realize that some people actually need to have this pointed out.

The underlined word is capitalized, so it's a proper name rather than a common noun.

Yes. Sometimes I feel that I was one of the few that actually paid attention in language arts and English classes.

The Christian God, is the God of Israel, YHWH, and when Christians use the word God, this is who Christian's mean.

There are other gods that don't exist, but people believe they do

Don't they teach parts of speech: nouns proper, nouns, adjectives, adverbs, &c. in elementary school, not to mention kid's educational TV?

...and what does atheism have to do with this? Do atheists have a special doctrine of grammar?

I always viewed "God" as a title, such as "President." It's not anyone's actual name.

And that is no different than the descriptive terms King, Lord, Queen, Goddess, Master, President, etc.

In 25 years of discussion and debate with atheists I've not heard that presented as such.

No, only entities that think they are gods. There is only one God.

Entities that think they are gods? Tammuz, Moses, the Judges of Israel? Angels, Satan, Jesus. All are called gods in the Bible. Some of them appointed as gods by God Jehovah himself.
