It could be argued that we are evolving in the wrong direction. When we lived in small clans of hunter-gatherers, everyone had to cooperate and share, to survive. Selfishness wasn't an option. To put your own well-being above that of the clan would have been both irrational, and counter-productive. But as we humans gained in understanding of our environment, and in our ability to exploit it to our own material advantage, hoarding and hedging against an unknown future became an option, and so did the idea of looking out for #1. It seems that the more we humans have, the less inclined we are to share it. To the point, now, where selfishness is a primary motive. Cooperation has turned into competition. And we have all become each other's enemy.
This doesn't strike me a positive evolution. In fact, it seems to me that the end result will inevitably be our own destruction.
