A friend and former co-worker/employee died some time back. We didn't hang out or talk on a daily basis except when we were working together.
A mutual work acquaintance who he was working with contacted me to ask if I had seen him, which I had not. Though he struggled with alcohol addiction, it was unheard of for him to not report to work.
I headed to his house later that day. He lived alone in a converted barn he had renovated into a home an a small amount of acreage surrounded by a barbed wire fence and a cattle gate at the driveway. Whether at home or away, he kept the gate locked with a padlock and chain. Upon arriving that day, I feared the worst when I arrived and the gate was locked from the inside.
I climbed the gate and walked to his house, and the fear deepened as I saw both his vehicles, a Ford F150 and a Ford Escort both parked in his drive.
I knocked on the door and there was no answer. I began peering in windows and saw nothing. Climbing the second floor deck, I peered into the bedroom sliding door to see the top of his head on the floor motionless. I called the local police.
They came out and accessed the house. I still remember the smell like it was yesterday. He had been dead for days, but since he led a private life and would commonly go days without speaking to anyone, he went undiscovered for nearly a week.
Which leads to the point and question of this thread. If your body died today, how long would it be until your body was discovered?
For me, I'm not sure, but it would likely be quite some time, as I also live alone and am a bit of a hermit. I speak to my daughter a few times per month, but aside from that, have no one I associate with outside of work, which would mean that unless I had some sort of event planned with my daughter, it would probably be someone from work that would realize I hadn't shown up in a while, which could be quite some time since I don't really see anyone on a daily basis.
It's funny though that I get the occasional text from one of my general managers if they don't see my daily emails come out at their regular time asking if I'm okay. Not sure if they're thinking I'm dead or just got fired. Sadly, if the email didn't come out that day, the former is far more likely.
