How Long Will You Be "Missing?"

A friend and former co-worker/employee died some time back. We didn't hang out or talk on a daily basis except when we were working together.

A mutual work acquaintance who he was working with contacted me to ask if I had seen him, which I had not. Though he struggled with alcohol addiction, it was unheard of for him to not report to work.

I headed to his house later that day. He lived alone in a converted barn he had renovated into a home an a small amount of acreage surrounded by a barbed wire fence and a cattle gate at the driveway. Whether at home or away, he kept the gate locked with a padlock and chain. Upon arriving that day, I feared the worst when I arrived and the gate was locked from the inside.

I climbed the gate and walked to his house, and the fear deepened as I saw both his vehicles, a Ford F150 and a Ford Escort both parked in his drive.

I knocked on the door and there was no answer. I began peering in windows and saw nothing. Climbing the second floor deck, I peered into the bedroom sliding door to see the top of his head on the floor motionless. I called the local police.

They came out and accessed the house. I still remember the smell like it was yesterday. He had been dead for days, but since he led a private life and would commonly go days without speaking to anyone, he went undiscovered for nearly a week.

Which leads to the point and question of this thread. If your body died today, how long would it be until your body was discovered?

For me, I'm not sure, but it would likely be quite some time, as I also live alone and am a bit of a hermit. I speak to my daughter a few times per month, but aside from that, have no one I associate with outside of work, which would mean that unless I had some sort of event planned with my daughter, it would probably be someone from work that would realize I hadn't shown up in a while, which could be quite some time since I don't really see anyone on a daily basis.

It's funny though that I get the occasional text from one of my general managers if they don't see my daily emails come out at their regular time asking if I'm okay. Not sure if they're thinking I'm dead or just got fired. Sadly, if the email didn't come out that day, the former is far more likely. :D

I actually have one of the other admins as one of my emergency contacts (I know it's not quite on-topic) because it would bother me if I died and everybody in RF thought I had just wandered away.

(on topic) Most of the time, I suspect it would take a day or two before my body was found: I live alone but I interact with one of my neighbors pretty regularly.

If Ken was out of town, I probably wouldn't be found until he got back.

*Edit: wait, do possums and coyotes count?

And actually this is quite on topic.

I'm not sure if I would really want to know if someone stopped posting because they died. I'd rather assume they just rage-quit the forum after reading one of my insufferable posts like most do.

Likewise, I'm not sure how I feel about others knowing if I was just dead or left the forum. I mean either way, the celebration would go on for days...

Only if we can throw buzzards into the mix...and they have the ability notify next of kin. :D

I don't think a buzzard would be bold enough to walk in the front door (I sleep with my door open most nights).

The possums and coyotes on the other hand would probably stroll right in,

That's funny cuz you were my first choice as a contact.

Then I thought about it and decided to throw it up to the admins instead of putting one person on the spot.

Kind of mistake: all Phil did was ask me what size my shoes were.

As of now, I'd be found same day, probably in the AM if it was here. Boss would wonder why I wasn't up. In many ways I 'envy' the hermit lifestyle. In pioneer days, old hermits might be there alone for months. There was a guy in a river valley close to us. One of his neighbours went to town weekly, and they had an agreement that if he wanted to hitch a ride, he'd put up some flag signal on his mailbox. But he'd only go once every couple of months. The neighbour did find him, but I don't know how long it was. The guy had a reputation for smelling bad when he was alive, so I imagine he added some more to the stories.

Yeah, probably an error in judgment, because unless you wear New Balance size 10, I'd have been the better choice. :)

Then again, Phil is about 1500 miles closer to you and would get the shoes nearly a day before I could.

Possums maybe, but probably not coyotes. I'm sure Wiley can't count the times he's tried to catch the road runner...

Probably wont be anything left of them after the coyotes get done with them anyway.

The Road Runner is in a lot better shape than I am.

Probably a few days. I have family, friends, co-workers and neighbors, but I also value my autonomy. So it would likely take them a few days to consider me unusually remote.

Reminds me so much of gold teeth. Forget the shoes, go for the gold.

I've got plans to be cyrogenically frozen as soon as the ionic currents cease flowing across my brain's neurons. If my body and brain tissues were to significantly deteriorate after my demise, this could ruin any chance of me being reanimated back to life by future scientists. I'm always in close contact with my spouse, daughter, and brother. I hope they'd promptly discover me missing upon my passing from this life in order to have me cyronically preserved for my next life..

How to Be Cryonically Preserved
