The Bible Erroneously Says the Earth is Flat

You're right, they probably didn't. If you see it as poetic language and not literal, I guess there's nothing for me to argue with you about. The question is, how do you decide what's literal and what's metaphorical in the Bible?
The context, for one.

For example, Earth in Scripture can actually mean society. Read Genesis 11:1, you'll see it. (No planet has a language.)

So, that's what Peter meant when he wrote about the Earth in 2 Peter 3. "The heavens and the Earth that now are." No different planet after the Flood...different society of people, though.
And heavens can mean, governments and authorities...see Ephesians 3:10.

If just any Joe Blo could accurately grasp the meaning behind the Scriptures....why did Jesus make the statement @ Luke 10:21, that to some, it would be hidden? And Daniel 12 says the 'words would be secret'. Until the time of the end (Last Days). You know, Isaiah 2:1-4 ties in with this, happening as it does in the Last Days.

Have a good night.

But the Flood never happened. Unless you scale it down to a local flood that most people in the area could have walked away from and would have had no effect on those outside of that one area. But then we are back to not taking it literally again.

Of course it did.
There's simply too much evidence for it.

In fact, I never really used this information to support its authenticity, but the similarities of the Greek, Roman, Norse, Hindu, etc., mythologies...of "gods" interacting with humans... reveals a kernel of truth, stated in Genesis 6:1-4, as to why Jehovah caused the Flood.

Although you'll never accept it as history. Some day you will, though. (You can apologize then, lol.)

Good night.

No, there is no evidence for it. And yes, we have been over this. You do not understand the nature of evidence and refuse to discuss it. All you have is terrible misinterpretation of evidence.

And different mythologies are quite different. There going to be similarities to any flood myths. So one cannot put too much stock into them. It is the differences that tell us that they are different myths.

By the way, though it is highly doubtful that either of us will have a "someday". That is merely another lame theistic threat. You will have some apologizing to do yourself if that occurs. How are you going to explain your calling of your God a liar?

That was no "threat"! See, you don't even grasp my beliefs, you just arbitrarily lump me w/ others!

You totally misunderstood other aspects of my post, also, accusing me of not understanding evidence! You misunderstood me!! I wasn't discussing Flood myths....rather, myths about their gods interacting w/ humans! I'm not going to reiterate my comments anymore to you, your comprehension can't be that bad! You just fail to thoroughly read my posts.

But those myths are surely even more disparate and inconsistent than the various flood myths...about the only genuine commonality is the notion of 'gods' interacting in some way with 'humans' - and that's hardly surprising - because they are stories made up by different cultures at different times. Also not terribly surprising that ancient cultures had stories of mischievous deities throwing heavenly spanners in their mundane works to help them make sense of the arbitrary and capricious nature of their unpredictable and precarious existence.

I suppose next you're gonna tell me that there aren't four angels at the four corners. Sheesh! you're a real party-pooper. :D
I don't mind if the Earth is flat, but it is sad that humanity is going to mess it up regardless of whether it's round, flat, inverted.......

And what always really niggled me was when I discovered that Angels were not the gorgeous voluptuous creatures on post cards but ugly old geezers with wings. Now that's just not fair.

Of course there was a threat. What was this nonsense:

"Although you'll never accept it as history. Some day you will, though. (You can apologize then, lol.)"

The fact is that you are wrong about myths and the Flood.

And you still appear to be afraid to learn what is and what is not evidence. Can you tell me why?

Yeah, there's over 30,000 different sects in Christianity (hence, differing views on its source book, the Bible), more so than any other major religion. I mean....
Judaism has about 60 sects (?).
Islam has about 60-70 sects (?).
But Christianity? Over 33,000?!!!

Its like some behind-the-scenes Enemy has monkeyed with it...trying to obfuscate the Truth behind it!

Care to guess who?
Revelation 12:9. He's got you believing inaccuracies, too!
Really, he's duping all of us, in one way or another. Be it with certain histories, with fields of science, with religions, etc.

FYI, How can the Bible mean the Earth has literal corners, when it says the Earth is a "circle"? -- Isaiah 40:22.
(Could it rather, be poetic? Secular scholars will tell you this.)
I guess you want to believe it's contradictory, eh? You think you're smarter than Newton, or Boyle, or Kepler was? Why didn't they catch these contradictory ("erroneous") statements?
So we have

Isaiah 40:22
22 It is he that sitteth upon the circle of the earth,
and the inhabitants thereof are as grasshoppers;
that stretcheth out the heavens as a curtain,
and spreadeth them out as a tent to dwell in:

Vs

Isaiah 11:12
And he shall set up an ensign for the nations,
and shall assemble the outcasts of Israel,
and gather together the dispersed of Judah
from the four corners of the earth.

When, as we know, neither is correct;

As I have emphasized several times before, the bible clearly states that the earth is flat. In another thread, I made the conclusion that a fundamentalist Christian who actually believes the bible is the true word of God and means what it says would not only believe in a flat earth, but would also adhere to the idea that belief in a spherical (or technically ellipsoidal ) earth is Satanic, as well as a damnable sin, since fundamentalist Christians believe that to be a Christian, one must take the bible literally, and that disbelief in the bible is caused by the deception of Satan, and thus, akin to the worship of Satan. This is how they get people to deny their own reasoning and even their own senses. Of course, the earth is most certainly not flat. Yet it is repeatedly made clear that the Biblical authors thought that the earth was flat, and also stationary. A book written by a god would not contain such a laughable error.

Others have accused me of copying and pasting out-of-context verses from "atheist" sites to show that the biblical authors believed in a flat earth. However, there are groups of Christians who take the bible literally and use it to argue for belief in a flat earth. Here is a link to a Christian apologetics website that quotes 75 biblical verses that state the earth is flat. 75 Bible Verses Prove Flat Earth

Additionally, the Christian apologist author provides commentary about the verses and their context, showing that they do indeed teach that the earth is flat. He then goes on various tirades about how the spherical earth is a teaching of Satan and an evil deception. This is a serious problem. Similar to the young-earth creationist crowd, there are actually people who are raising their children to blindly follow an erroneous book rather than to actually learn why the earth is not flat.
What exactly are you taking issue with here? Almost everyone with any brains recognises that, whether one considers it divinely inspired or not, the bible was written by ancient people whose view of the physical world was naive by modern standards.

Only a few fools claim to take every word of the oldest texts literally at face value. Christendom certainly has not done so since the earliest days and, from the comments I have seen on this forum from Jews, nor has Judaism either.

If this thread is just to poke fun at flat-earthers, It's sort of fun but a bit like shooting fish in a barrel, isn't it?

People will say "sunrise" and this "proves" they STILL believe the sun goes around the earth.
And actually, Einstein showed that they are right. YOU are the center, and the sun goes around
you. On the moon you see the earth going around you.
These "proofs" are just language, translations, metaphors, symbolic language etc.. They have
nothing to do with spirituality.
As an aside, when something is stated categorically and happens to be quite prescient it gets
ignored by skeptics, ie "God commanded the seas to bring forth life." THAT verse was grist for
the mill of biblical time skeptics.

Good night.

There were local floods for thousands of years, but no global flood and NO evidence for a global flood. Our myth comes from a 4 day flood of the Euphrates River basin in 2900 BC. The "ark" was barges used to haul grain, livestock and beer down river towards the Persian Gulf. There is evidence of a flood sediment (footprint) 150 miles wide and 350 miles south.. It probably felt like their whole world. The area is pretty flat at 30 feet above sea level getting closer to sea level as you pass Basra.

What better way to teach a morality tale than with a supernatural epic story?

Do you also believe Aesop's Fables are history?

Um. HC, I know what you meant to say, so just let me say it for you in more words... for the sake of clarity.

The Bible says "the circle of the earth." Which of course refers to the circumference around the earth at any "plane". One can "draw a circle" around any part of the earth, because it is spherical.

So when Isaiah says, "the one dwelling above the circle of the earth - of, being the operative word, it means just that. From any angle in the universe, the circle of the earth can be seen. God dwells above it.
A circle is a flat 2-dimensional plane.

Any time, my brother. :)

(what) to believe.

You're right, probably not.

But that wasn't my point. I don't recall them ever saying "the Bible erroneously says the Earth has literal corners", as you're implying.

Prove me wrong...I'd like to see it. Really.

Nothing will ever prove you wrong (to your satisfaction)
on anything. See "mammoths", in this connection.
