Did you know the Moon is part of Mars? According to Derpy Donny Dollhands it is!

The dude has access to the best speechwriters available. I don't have to give him the benefit of anything. He's the ****ing President of the United States, not a Year 8 English student. It's not unreasonable to expect him to express himself without a host of translators to parse what he "really" means.

It was an extremely poorly written tweet. But it does not take much parsing to understand his intent. But you have a point. He has well paid speech writers. He should use them instead of constantly letting The Stupid out at night.

I don't have time to listen to Neil drone on all day. Love the guy, but he don't know how to get to the point sometimes.

Budget of NASA - Wikipedia

"NASA's budget for fiscal year (FY) 2019 is $21.5 billion. It represents 0.49% of the $4.4 trillion the United States plans to spend that year. Since its inception, the United States has spent $601.31 billion (in nominaldollars) on NASA."

"As a federal agency, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) receives its funding from the annual federal budget passed by the United States Congress."

If you are unhappy with NASA only receiving $21.5 billion a year I suggest you contact your representatives in Congress and tell them to get on the ball and stop being so cheap. ;)
Ok that is sad, he actually makes a lot of good points. But the cost is half a penny on a dollar. And that pays for everything NASA does. If you don't have time for the 5 minute video you can start 3 minutes in.

It's a tweet, not a speech, and it doesn't take 'a host of translators' just a brain and a modicum of common sense.

You're not a year 8 English student. It's not unreasonable to expect you can do this on your own.

I love that for the most part, the people screaming and wailing about how unfair it is that people hold Donny Dollhands to account for his endless crazy pronouncements and demanding that we give him "the benefit of the doubt" and trot out completely contradictory reimaginings of "what he really meant", are the exact same people who were ready to burn Obama at the stake as a Muslim terrorist over the handful of times he misspoke or awkwardly phrased something (or even times he said something quite reasonable, which was then run through incredibly overwrought, over contrived interpretations to determine malice where none existed).

No, I'm saying that people in general should interpret the words of others in good faith, rather than misrepresenting people's intentions because it's politically expedient or cathartic. Unfortunately, too many people don't agree with this basic ethical principle.

You appear to be saying that because some other people are hypocrites, then you should also be a hypocrite.

Anyway, whining about every single thing Trump says completely negates the impact of complaining if he says something genuinely harmful. Especially when the whining involves a clear misrepresentation of intended meaning.

No fan of Obama, me, but the double standard and hypocrisy among the trumpettes and other Usual Suspects is, as usual, stunning.

I'm not remotely a Trump fan, just think it is hypocritical to rejoice in doing something you hate having done to yourself. Childish, bad faith discourse is also a scourge on modern society no matter which side does it.

When it happens to you/your side you will no doubt reject the bad faith version others are presenting and so will be guilty of the same 'double standards and hypocrisy' you are complaining about here.

I'm not "whining about everything Trump says", I'm merely highlighting the particularly ridiculous things he says. It's not my fault that he says something outrageously ridiculous every other day. Here's an idea, stop attacking people for quoting him directly, start holding him to account. He's the ****ing President, be should be able to comport himself without legions of apologists.

As for "sides", I'm a conservative. Technically (allegedly) Trump is one of mine. And I call on ALL conservatives to hold ALL conservatives to a higher standard. This "my side right or wrong" bull**** is how we got into the political **** show we find ourselves in.

But apparently you don't think higher standards include making a rudimentary effort to interpret people's words with good faith rather than bad...

This "my side right or wrong" bull**** is how we got into the political **** show we find ourselves in.

Again, I'm not remotely a Trump supporter, I just think it is hypocritical to rejoice in doing something you hate having done to yourself. Childish, bad faith discourse is also a scourge on modern society no matter which side does it.

You don't think childish, bad faith discourse adds to the 'political **** show'?

I keenly await the imminent ad hoc spin by the resident trumpettes to try to make this anything but the ravings of an ignorant madman.
I am not a fanboy he definitely is talking about the program not science. Have to give a pass on tbis one tweet.

"For all of the money we are spending, NASA should NOT be talking about going to the Moon - We did that 50 years ago. They should be focused on the much bigger things we are doing, including Mars (of which the Moon is a part), Defense and Science!"

In context it's talking about "bigger things we are doing" so going to the Moon is a part of going to Mars.

At least that's how I would interpret it as you need to give the speaker/writer the benefit of the doubt. Modern discourse relies far too much on people interpreting the words of those they don't like with bad faith, giving them the most negative spin possible and then using them as a weapon.

Everyone hates it when other people interpret their words with bad faith, or it is done to people they like. As such everyone, especially your 'enemies', should be given the benefit of the doubt if alternative interpretations are plausible.

The way this has been reported in certain media outlets doesn't reflect well on the state of modern journalism.
I believe Trump has dementia and is a big doofus, but I agree that the implication is that the Moon is a stepping stone to Mars, not a moon of Mars.

It just goes to show only a doofus believes they can convey complex ideas from their crapper by Twitter.

Do you believe Trump actually thinks the Moon is part of Mars and that is what he was trying to communicate in his tweet?
Yes. He also believes:
1. People shouldn't exercise because our batteries might run out
2. You need ID to buy cereal
3. Asbestos could have saved the WTC
4. Vaccines cause autism
5. Light bulbs cause cancer
6. He had a larger inaugural crowd than Obama
7. The world would be better if Saddam Hussein was still in power
8. There are good people on both sides
9. Grab 'em by the *****
10. He is the most popular President in all of history

Need I go on? He is either stupid or insane. You pick.

Well yeah it's unfair to post blatant lies meant to defame.

li·bel
/ˈlībəl/
noun
  1. 1.
    LAW
a published false statement that is damaging to a person's reputation; a written defamation.
Learn how English grammar works and youll see how this is not libel.

It definitely could be interpreted that way, but it's almost certainly not what he meant.

That's why you read things with good faith and give them the benefit of the doubt.
If thats how English worked then editors would be out of a job because instead of clarity people can just have "good faith" and give an author the "benefit of a doubt."

Agreed. I’m a right-leaning moderate but Rex Tillerson’s summation of Trump is 100% correct.
