I have now "Ignored" my third member in the years that I've been here. And it always seems like a big deal.

Hell, I think I'm open-minded, and love debate, and I do. But there are things that are beyond debate, in my view. I don't ignore people who simply don't know much about topics in which I see myself as better informed. Rather, I try to use what I suppose to be my superior knowledge to teach. I don't ignore people whose political views differ from mine. I make my case, and if they make theirs, I'll read what they write. The same with religious views. These things are not rigorously deterministic, and therefore people have to find their own way within those disciplines.

I will, on the other hand, ignore somebody who insists, no matter argument is laid down, that 1 plus 1 equals 3. Here, I recognize I'm dealing with someone who simply can't understand the argument presented -- or doesn't want to, for whatever reason. In such a case, I have zero interest in trying to overcome such an attitude, and it seems to me best just not to have it disturb my line of sight anymore.

And it is also the same with people that I perceive as offering essentially hateful thoughts towards other people -- even if they are trying to disguise them under cover of some "philopophy" or other. People who simply hate other races, or other religions, or those who identify as other than vanilla straight sexuality. I see no purpose in further discussion with such, because I've observed for 72 years that they are not going to change their minds -- even for someone with arguments as brilliant and powerful as mine.

In other words, I will ignore people online in the same way that I will not acknowledge people in my local who I know to be someone I simply do not wish to be associated with at all.

Would you put another member on ignore? If so, for what reason? If not, why not?

For awhile I put some folks on ignore, but then I realised that wasn't necessary, because I could just ignore, by not responding.

I will never place ignore on anyone. I prefer to keep things direct and unhindered.

I only put people on ignore if they are trolling or literally using a thread or post of mine in some chopped up language fashion on purpose. It usually has nothing to do with the subject. Sometimes I want to put people on ignore, only two or three people I talked to once in a blue moon. Their views on say homosexuality really get to me. Then I figure just either not talk to them or talk about a different topic. Religious views can't be changed anyhow and no one really understands each other in regards to that, politics, or anything else.

It works better that way, actually. Cause if you're reading a thread and it seems chopped up, it kinda throws the topic off.

I've found that putting people on ignore makes for very strange threads if the ignored person is involved.

That said, it can be a useful tool to cool off....you can always stop the ignore.

That how I view the function. Some can handle it , and others cannot. I suppose it's a type of safe room for those too sensitive.

I answered no, because I never have, and have never been close to doing so.

Having said that, I could envisage doing so if my stunning good looks led to stalker-ish behaviour.

Given this appears somewhat unlikely, I'm sticking with 'No' as my response. To be clear, though, I don't judge those who take advantage of 'Ignore'. It's far better to use that feature than be tempted into derails, sidetracks or frustration.

I tend to be sensitive myself, but usually I cut the computer off after ringing my hands on a "good" comeback, get chocolate, and come back. A lot of times I'm actually pretty neutral talking that when someone ignores me, I'm more confused than insulted. Knowing one's own limits is actually a good way to handle things.

I have no issue with putting people om ignore.

    Here's my test:

    - do I enjoy interacting with the person?
    - do I think I'm going to learn anything from the person?

If the answer to both of those questions is "no" and it looks like the member is going to stick around, then onto ignore they go.

I'm here in my spare time; nobody's entitled to my attention.

    It doesn't work that way.
Putting someone else on <ignore> won't prevent their seeing your manly mug.
If it did, I could keep my kavorka from creating stalkers.

Putting people on ignore can actually break the habit of going on RF once you figure no one is interested in talking to you.
