Was Jesus Really Crucified

Starsoul

Truth
>fallingblood >You have no authority to say what Muhammad believed. It is not that simple. That is why there is a debate.

Totally agree.

Except you ignore what we know historically. Jesus was a criminal in the eyes of Rome. The Romans didn't need some random people telling them that. They say it when Jesus had his scene in the Temple.

This interpretation is closer to the actual one, and I Dont agree with ahanu AT all!. His interpretation is so not in line with The Prophets's Sayings regarding the incident of crucifiction. Muslims refer to the Quran And Hadith both for the interpretation regarding historical events. Its as much a part of faith as believing in One Allah and the Prophet and the Divine books. Will share more later.

Since you don't know any scripture whatsoever, why even bother to reply to a question directed towards another person..?
Really? You can't answer the question and instead, throw out a lame attempt at an insult. You really need to learn how to debate. Plus, I'm currently pursuing a degree in religion, so yeah, I know scripture.
Another meritless assertion.

Your specialty.
Look at the genealogies of Jesus. Look at the creation stories. Even the day in which Jesus died is contradicted in the Bible. If you don't believe there are any contradictions in the Bible it's because you've turned a blind eye to them.

Yes of course Jesus was really crucified. We have historical witnesses of this. For example, even Josephus, a Jewish historian, recorded that Jesus did indeed die on a cross. And then we have the witnesses of the apostles to the resurrected Christ.

Actually, we have no eye witness accounts. The first account comes from Paul, who was not an eye witness. The first in depth account was from the author of Mark (or at least the first one we have) which didn't come until around 70 C.E. Not an eye witness.

Correct, sister...

We also have the Koran as an extra-Biblical confirmation to the event.

Thus...we have the Holy books of half the earth's population confirming Jesus crucifixion until death upon the cross.

This is a pretty powerful witness.

Yes.

It does.

However, you can't read Arabic.
And we've seen that you think you can read Arabic, yet really have no idea what it truly means. We've also seen you can't debate, as is obvious from the above quote.
For the Holy Bible, yes, there are...

But, then again, when did you ever read the Holy Bible?
Another sign of you being unable to debate. But don't let those pesky little things called facts annoy you. They are only for people who are logical and rational, not people who simply rely on blind faith to guide them.

But just so you know, there are no eye witness accounts. Any critical scholar who isn't simply spewing out Christian apologetics based on blind faith, will agree that none of the Gospels were written by eye witnesses. It isn't even seriously debated.

Jesus was not crucified neither was he resurrected. For a person to be crucified he should die on the cross.

1.He was put on the cross and bought down very fast in 3 hours. In 3 hours its difficult for a person to die therefore Jesus was alive. 2.When he was bought down his two cross mates were alive proving even Jesus was alive

3.Jesus (pbuh) legs were not broken. What use is a broken leg to a dead man? Proving that he was alive.

4.the stone was removed and the winding sheets were unwound proving Jesus (pbuh) was alive

5.Jesus (pbuh) was disguised as a gardener. Because he was alive trying to be saved from the Jews

6.The tomb was roomy and spacious. What use is a spacious room for a dead person? Proving Jesus was alive.

7.When Mary Magdalene went to touch Jesus (pbuh) he said touch me not. he was alive, it will hurt him, he was in pain

8.Jesus (pbuh) said I have not yet Ascended unto My Father that means he was alive

9.Mary Magdalene not afraid recognizing Jesus (pbuh)

10.In the upper room Jesus (pbuh) showed his hand and feet to prove he was not a spirit and that he was alive.

11.The Disciples were all overjoyed to see him. Because they thought he was dead and the spirit form. They were all overjoyed to see him because he was alive.

12.Jesus (pbuh) ate broiled Fish and Honeycomb to prove he was alive.

13.The disciples had heard from Mary Magdalene that Jesus (pbuh) was alive.

14.Sign of Jonah. As Jonah was in the belly of the whale for 3 days and 3 nights so shall the son of man in the heart of the earth alive. So if he was alive that means no crucifixion, no resurrection. So in short Jesus (pbuh) was put on the cross according to the Bible but he did not die. Jesus (pbuh) was not really crucified but was crucificted.

It is not crucifixion its crucifiction The Quran says in Chapter 4: Verse 157 "And because of their saying (in boast). 1.He was put on the cross and bought down very fast in 3 hours. In 3 hours its difficult for a person to die therefore Jesus was alive. 2.When he was bought down his two cross mates were alive proving even Jesus was alive

If the Biblical account is to be followed, he had been extensively tortured prior to the crucifixion and would therefore have been in a much weakened state due to blood loss, grevious internal injuries, etc. The point about the two robbers beside him 'proves' nothing; people have different endurance rates of suffering (for example, 15 lashes can kill one person whilst another can endure over 200); and also take into account his previous torture.

3.Jesus (pbuh) legs were not broken. What use is a broken leg to a dead man? Proving that he was alive.

As the point stands, I fail to see the reasoning. If the part I have highlighted in red means to read only as 'leg', i.e. 'What use is a leg to a dead man?', the point still logically collapses. What use is an arm or a skull or skin to a dead man? None either; but that doesn't mean you mutilate the corpse to destroy those parts of the body since the dead man 'doesn't need it'.

4.the stone was removed and the winding sheets were unwound proving Jesus (pbuh) was alive.

You said in the opening you were going to prove Jesus did not ressurect. A Christian could merely argue that the stone was removed, sheets unwound, because he DID ressurect and come back to life. Of course, this is equally unproved, but neither have you 'proved' your point. The point of ressurection is a return to life.

5.Jesus (pbuh) was disguised as a gardener. Because he was alive trying to be saved from the Jews

And you know this how?...

6.The tomb was roomy and spacious. What use is a spacious room for a dead person? Proving Jesus was alive.

So I guess that all the Pharaohs in Egypt were also 'alive' then 'cos their tombs were big? Everyone who's buried in a crypt is 'alive'? What a fail of reasoning. Honoured people are given big resting places; that's historically observable. Jesus was according to religious texts highly honoured by his disciples and followers, and thus would also have got a big tomb.

7.When Mary Magdalene went to touch Jesus (pbuh) he said touch me not. he was alive, it will hurt him, he was in pain

Again, resurrection = dead, then returned to life. Doesn't contradict Christian theology.

8.Jesus (pbuh) said I have not yet Ascended unto My Father that means he was alive

When are you going to get the ressurection = dead, THEN ALIVE, point?

9.Mary Magdalene not afraid recognizing Jesus (pbuh)

See above...

10.In the upper room Jesus (pbuh) showed his hand and feet to prove he was not a spirit and that he was alive.

11.The Disciples were all overjoyed to see him. Because they thought he was dead and the spirit form. They were all overjoyed to see him because he was alive.

Ah, so Allah swapped another person into terrible suffering? Nice guy.

Note of course, that I don't actually subscribe to Christian theology; I'm merely pointing out that in order to disprove the ressurection, you have to do a little more than say 'it's not true'.

In essence, the argument goes roughly as thus:

"Jesus wasn't crucified and ressurected"
"Why?"
"Because he appeared alive after three days + (insert your other 'proofs' here)"
"That's because he was ressurected"

You need to add an extra line of reasoning.

Jesus was not crucified neither was he resurrected. For a person to be crucified he should die on the cross.
Being crucified is simply the act of being nailed to a cross. It does not imply death.
1.He was put on the cross and bought down very fast in 3 hours. In 3 hours its difficult for a person to die therefore Jesus was alive.
It wasn't three hours. We are told in Mark that it was 6 hours. It is a short time; however, it does not imply he was not dead. It is not impossible for an individual to have died after only 6 hours.

It would actually depend on the events that led up to the crucifixion. If he had a serious flogging, which is quite possible given the attitude that Romans had towards insurrectionists, which Jesus would have been classified as, his life expectancy on the cross would have been severely diminished. So you can't simply rule out that he wasn't dead because of the time in which he spent on the cross. And our earliest and best sources of the event claim that he was in fact dead.
2.When he was bought down his two cross mates were alive proving even Jesus was alive
That proves nothing at all. Whether or not his cross mates were alive is completely besides the point. The reason being we don't know what condition they were in when they were crucified.
3.Jesus (pbuh) legs were not broken. What use is a broken leg to a dead man? Proving that he was alive.
Again, it does not prove that he was alive. We do have the remains of at least one victim who died from crucifixion (we know this because he still even had the spike in his leg). His legs were not broken either, but he had died from crucifixion. The breaking of legs was not necessary for a crucifixion. It may have been used on some, but it was not a must.
4.the stone was removed and the winding sheets were unwound proving Jesus (pbuh) was alive
That proves nothing. It could signify that Jesus was resurrected. It could signify someone stole his body. It does not prove that Jesus was alive. Especially since we are told that he was dead.
5.Jesus (pbuh) was disguised as a gardener. Because he was alive trying to be saved from the Jews
First, the Jews wouldn't have cared if he was alive. They would not have tried to kill him. They were not responsible for the crucifixion. The Romans crucified Jesus. They are responsible for his death.

Also, we are not told that Jesus was disguised as a gardener. We are simply told he was mistaken. There is no suggestion he was trying to hide his identity. Especially when one considers he supposedly appeared to a large amount of people.

If we are to believe the Biblical account, it simply means he was resurrected. Especially if one considers the events that happen afterwards.
6.The tomb was roomy and spacious. What use is a spacious room for a dead person? Proving Jesus was alive.
That makes very little sense. It was a tomb. It was made to be a tomb. It was a place to lay the dead. The fact that he was put there suggests that he was dead, not alive. It wasn't some special tomb, it was a normal tomb. Again, it was a tomb, a place to lay the dead.
7.When Mary Magdalene went to touch Jesus (pbuh) he said touch me not. he was alive, it will hurt him, he was in pain
You are assuming to much. Jesus says when Mary should not touch him. What you are doing here is picking and choosing what you want to believe, and then making baseless assertions about those. There is no suggestion Jesus was in pain.
8.Jesus (pbuh) said I have not yet Ascended unto My Father that means he was alive
It means exactly what he said, he had not yet ascended unto his father. It means nothing else. The Bible claims that he had a physical resurrection. So it would make sense, if that story is true, that there was no ascension yet.
10.In the upper room Jesus (pbuh) showed his hand and feet to prove he was not a spirit and that he was alive.
That was not why he showed the wounds. We are told very clearly that Jesus died, and then was resurrected. In a physical resurrection, he still would have had the wounds on his hands and feet. More so though, we are told of this story only in John, and there is very little reason to believe that the story ever happened.
11.The Disciples were all overjoyed to see him. Because they thought he was dead and the spirit form. They were all overjoyed to see him because he was alive.
Wrong again. He was, according to the Bible, a physically resurrected body. They were over joyed because they knew he was dead, and he came back to life. He was alive then, but it does not suggest that he had not died. Actually, we are told that he had died.
12.Jesus (pbuh) ate broiled Fish and Honeycomb to prove he was alive.
Because, according to the Biblical account, he had been resurrected. It does not suggest he hadn't died.
13.The disciples had heard from Mary Magdalene that Jesus (pbuh) was alive.
Alive as in resurrected. You have to take the account in context.
First, it does mean a crucifixion. He was nailed to a cross. Thus he was crucified. You need a better understanding of the word crucify.

Also, the verse says nothing about Jesus being alive in the heart of the earth. So your assumption here is baseless.
It is not crucifixion its crucifiction The Quran says in Chapter 4: Verse 157 "And because of their saying (in boast). We killed Messiah 'Isa (Jesus), son of Maryam (Mary), the Messenger of Allah," -- but they killed him not, nor crucified him, but the resemblance of 'Isa (Jesus) was put over another man (and they killed that man)..."
The Quran is not a very good source here. The main reason being that it is distant from the events by centuries. The best and most reliable sources we have claim that he had died. There is no reason to believe that he hadn't died. The Romans were superb in their crucifixion methods. There is no reason to assume they screwed up on this account.

The problem you're having is that you are picking and choosing what parts of the Gospel accounts you want to follow because they fit with your preconceived ideas of what you want to have happened. However, it is not logical to assume that the events after the resurrection are true unless there was a resurrection. And to have a resurrection, you must have a death.

The events after the resurrection simply show that Jesus, according to the Biblical events, had in fact resurrected. Even the earliest account we have of Jesus, in Paul, claim that he was resurrected. To be resurrected, one has to die. What this tells us is that, nearly immediately, it was known that Jesus had in fact died on the cross. There is no suggestion otherwise.

On resurrection

The earliest attested form of the belief in Jesus' resurrection occurs in 1 Corinthians 15, where Paul compares the general resurrection to that of Jesus and thus implies his conception of the latter. The risen Jesus "became a ... Spirit" (v. 45). His was a spiritual, not a natural body (v. 44) and did not have flesh, since such is entirely unsuited to immortality (v. 50). (Robert Price, The Resurrection, [1]

The ultra-conservatives keep insisting on a “physical” resurrection of Jesus. Paul, whose work pre-dates the first Gospel, insists on the exact opposite. His fifteenth chapter of 1 Corinthians could not possibly be clearer. I invite you to read to reread that passage for yourself. This passage is almost pure Platonism. Paul knows only a spiritual resurrection. (Tom Harper, The Pagan Christ, p. 174)

That the original Christians believed in a spiritual resurrection is hinted at in many strange features of the Gospel accounts of the appearances of Jesus after death, which may be survivals of an original mystical tradition later corrupted by the growing legend of a bodily resurrection, such as a Jesus that they do not recognize, or who vanishes into thin air. But more importantly, it is also suggested by the letters of Paul, our earliest source of information on any of the details of the original Christian beliefs. For Paul never mentions or quotes any of the Gospels, so it seems clear that they were not written in his lifetime. This is supported by internal evidence that suggests all the Gospels were written around or after the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 A.D., well after Paul's last surviving letter, which was written around the year 58.

Jesus was placed on the cross and did not die; he survived the crucifixion. The evidence proves Jesus was deliberately drugged to make him appear dead (John 19:30), so the Roman soldiers wouldn’t break his legs to expedite his death. The Jews already knew Jesus was accursed (Deu 21:23), executed on false charges (Luke 23:22). The body had to be removed before the Sabbath so the land won’t be defiled.

Yet Paul never mentions Jesus having been resurrected in the flesh. He never mentions empty tombs, physical appearances, or the ascension of Jesus into heaven afterward (i.e. when Paul mentions the ascension, he never ties it to appearances in this way, and never distinguishes it from the resurrection event itself)

Why Jews Can't Believe in Jesus - Trial of Jesus

Tract 13c - The Hebrew Trials of Christ

When Jesus expired after drinking the vinegar, the Pilate gave permission to Joseph to remove the body and wrap in healing spices.

Interestingly, there is also the possibility that Pilate was bribed. This would account for the crucifiction taking place at the Garden of Gethsemane (private land), and for the body being taken down so quickly. In short the evidence is overwhelming that the Cruci- fixion was instead a
Cruci- fiction

Another explanation is provided by a strong tradition that Pilate was “got at” with a sizable bribe amounting to the equivalent of 30,000. If what is described in the Gospels is true, then it is obvious that Pilate did have a vested interest in the drama enacted that day in Jerusalem…Finally, there is another significant fact. In the calendars of the Saints of the Coptic Church, both in Egypt and in Ethiopia, Pilate and his wife appear as “saints”. This could be possible only if we accept that Pilate, knowing full well that his soldiers had made a wrong arrest, knowingly condemned Judas in place of Jesus, and allowed the latter to escape.

Let us quote the passage Luke 23:51-56

(The same had not consented to the counsel and deed of them;) he was of Arimathaea, a city of the Jews: who also himself waited for the kingdom of God. This man went unto Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus. And he took it down, and wrapped it in linen, and laid it in a sepulchre that was hewn in stone, wherein never man before was laid. And that day was the preparation, and the sabbath drew on. And the women also, which came with him from Galilee, followed after, and beheld the sepulchre, and how his body was laid. And they returned, and prepared spices and ointments; and rested the sabbath day according to the commandment. (Luke 23:51-56)

Apparently, the women knew Jesus was alive, that’s why they prepared spices to anoint Jesus’ body.

No one knows the exact date on which the crucifixion occurred. The synoptic Gospels and the fourth Gospel locate it near the time of Passover. I see no reason to doubt that. There is, however, too much agenda in both the synoptic’s attempt to identify the Last Supper with the Passover feast, and the fourth Gospel’s attempt to identify the day of crucifixion with the day on which the Paschal Lamb was slain, for me to take either assertion literally.

How long was Jesus on the cross before he died? I do not think anyone knows. Remember, those who might have noticed and relayed that information had all forsaken him and fled. The appearance of Joseph of Arimathea, the darkness over the land, the split in the temple veil, the ecstatic cry of faith from the centurion—all were elements of the developing legend. The hasty burial before the Sabbath was but a part of the burial legend. Thus no one knows how long Jesus lived on the cross, how he died, when he was taken down, or where he was buried, “for they all forsook him and fled”. That means there was no first-day-of-the-week visit to the tomb by the women to anoint him, since there was no tomb and no sense of when he died or of where he was buried. (John Shelby Spong, Resurrection: Myth or Reality, p. 241)

The apostles were not eye-witnesses to the crucifixion (Mark 14:50). The Bible says “they all forsook him and fled”

Jesus survived the cross so Christians are not saved. Now if Christians reject the Quranic version, they must accept the Biblical evidence that Jesus was kept alive, only to be resusciated on the third day before sunrise. The Gospels say the stone was “rolled away” and the tomb was empty. Obviously, Jesus did not stagger out by himself; his body was taken by the Essenes who restored him back to life.

The scholar Ahmed Deedat answers the question: WHO MOVED THE STONE - By Ahmed Deedat
But it doesn’t matter who moved the stone, the crucifixion was a conspiracy to keep Jesus alive. The Essenes were the followers of Jesus:

The name of the Essenes had been changed previously from Hassidim to Essenes. Philo calls them Therapeutae, and Eusebins says the Therapentae were Christians. [1]

The Essenes followed Jesus after John was beheaded, they were strict adherents to the Law (Matt 5:17-20) which solved the problem of lawlessness. They supported Jesus when he favored the Jewish Law and denounced Pharisaism.

The man dressed in white at the tomb was Essene.

As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man dressed in a white robe sitting on the right side, and they were alarmed. (Mark 16:5)

And they despise wealth, and do not turn away from sharing their goods with those that are destitute. No one amongst them, however, enjoys a greater amount of riches than another. For a regulation with them is, that an individual coming forward to join the sect must sell his possessions, and present the price of them to the community. And on receiving the money, the head of the order distributes it to all according to their necessities. Thus there is no one among them in distress. And they do not use oil, regarding it as a defilement to be anointed. And there are appointed overseers, who take care of all things that belong to them in common, and they all appear always in white clothing. (Hippolytus of Rome, Tenets of the Essene, [1]

Let us expose the undeniable facts:

1. The Roman soldiers were bribed.

2. The body of Jesus was stolen.

3. The story of the empty tomb is mythical

4. The resurrection of Jesus was symbolic

5. Paul contradicts the Gospels

6. There are no crucifixion prophecies in the Old Testament

Islam432

7.The crucifixion took place on private ground, and the witnesses were far away.

There is also the consistent agreement of modern scholars that the Crucifiction was more likely held at the Garden of Gethsemane -- which would leave considerable room for a mock crucifixion, a skillfully stage-managed ritual. Only a few eyewitnesses would have been immediately present, with the general populace constrained to witness from a distance, the latter fact confirmed by the Synoptic Gospels.

8.Jesus was drugged to keep him alive; he fell unconscious before the Roman soldiers could break his legs.

Within the canonical texts certain clues may be found that shows that the biblical crucifixion was a less then transparent affair. In the Fourth Gospel Jesus, hanging on the cross, says that he thirsts and is given a sponge allegedly soaked in vinegar. Tradition has it that this act was an act of derision, but in actuality vinegar - or soured wine - was a temporary stimulant with effects similar to smelling salts. It was often used to resuscitate exhausted galley slaves. For an exhausted man, a sniff or taste of vinegar would induce a restorative, rejuvenating effect. Surprisingly, in Jesus' case the effect is exactly the opposite. As soon as he tastes or inhales the sponge he expires. This is physiologically inexplicable, if indeed it was vinegar. On the other hand if it were a sponge soaked in a soporific drug - a mixture of opium and/or belladonna, for instance, commonly used in Palestine at that time - unconsciousness would occur, giving the impression of sudden death.

9.The Pilate knew it takes several days to die from crucifixion. Jesus merely expired in three hours! or six hours according to you

Josephus tells a story of the Romans crucifying people along the walls of Jerusalem. He also says that the Roman soldiers would amuse themselves by crucifying criminals in different positions. In Roman-style crucifixion, the victim took days to die slowly from suffocation — caused by the victim's blood-supply slowly draining away, to a quantity insufficient to supply the required oxygen to vital organs. The dead body was left up for vultures and other birds to consume.

Where is it written in bible that Jesus(pbuh) was resurrected in physical bodily form

Also they were scared to see Jesus(pbuh) at first as they thought he was a spirit so he showed his hand to prove WHAT???
obviously to prove that spirit has no flesh and bones

Definition of crucified :To put (a person) to death by nailing or binding to a cross.

Crucifixion is a form of an ancient (for the lack of a better word) death penalty. It was a method of execution. However, that does not mean that one necessarily died. If you read Josephus, he writes of an account in which a few individuals that he knew were crucified. He then states that they, those 3 who had been crucified, by request, were taken down from the cross, and one of them survived (Life 76). He specifically states that these individuals were crucified, but were still alive.

Antiquities 12: Chapter 5 also states: for they were whipped with rods, and their bodies were torn to pieces, and were crucified, while they were still alive, and breathed.. This shows that crucifixion did not imply death. That is why even the Gospels had to state that that Jesus died. It was not simply implied by being crucified.

So no, as we see, crucifixion does not imply that one dies.

Paul, the Gospels, both state that Jesus was literally resurrected. That implies a physical bodily form. If we look at the other cases of resurrection in the Gospel accounts, they refer to physical bodily resurrections. If we look at the idea of resurrection in 1st century Judaism, it was a physical bodily resurrection. There is no reason to believe anything else.

Also, the fact that the Bible state Jesus was resurrected, and then that Thomas was able to physically touch him, shows that the idea was a physical bodily resurrection.

i mentioned it earlier all three of them were brought down earlier , after 3 or 6 hours although it takes several days to die from crucifixion
