Who is the True God mentioned in 1 John 5:20?

    • “We know also that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know Him who is true. And we are in Him who is true by being in His Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.” (Emphasis mine)
Many people, people of expert knowledge in scriptures, people of professed reverence for the almighty God, theologians of renown, eminent men of power and in leadership, have claimed that the verse refers to …… Jesus the Christ!

What do you say, and how are you see it as so.

I mean, to me, the ‘true God’ is the ‘Him’ whom the Lord Jesus Christ has given us an understanding of?

Afterall, Jesus Christ prayed to ‘Him’, the Father, saying:
    • “Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.” (John 17:3)
The ‘you’ referred to his Heavenly Father: God!

    Your thoughts are welcomed!

See what happens to the meaning of scripture when you switch a few words around and give them emphasis?

Thank you for posting an example of one's ability to interpret scripture in any way they see fit to meet their own personal agenda.

First, as a side note, I would point out that it isn't "Jesus a Christ" but rather "Jesus the Christ".

    As far as who:

    This is the true God and eternal life;
that is, the Son of God, who is the immediate antecedent to the relative "this"; he is the true God, with his Father and the Spirit, in distinction from all false, fictitious, or nominal deities; and such as are only by office, or in an improper and figurative sense: Christ is truly and really God, as appears from all the perfections of deity, the fulness of the Godhead being in him; from the divine works of creation and providence being ascribed to him; and from the divine worship that is given him; as well as from the names and titles he goes by, and particularly that of Jehovah, which is incommunicable to a creature; and he is called "eternal life", because it is in him; and he is the giver of it to his people; and that itself will chiefly consist in the enjoyment and vision of him, and in conformity to him. John Gill (Emphasis mine)

There is a paradox of the many diverse and conflicting 'beliefs' over the millennia as what is the 'True God,' because if the fallible nature concludes that no one 'belief' knows what the 'Tfur God of Gods' is if God or Gods exists.

Interesting verse. John seems to be good at wording things in a way that is not easily understood.
But if we are in His Son then we are in Him.

Well, to me there is no way to God, many ways and only one way. I don't know, so I accept that it is so if I look at the all the claims.

A son of a family patriarch in Jesus' time was considered an authorized and binding proxy for the patriarch. And this is why Jesus was called the 'son of God' by his followers. They believed he spoke and acted on behalf of their God. They did not believe that he was God. They believed that he was a human representation of God's will and spirit, on Earth.

This illustrates the huge dilemma with trying to read and interpret the Bible literally. Or with some sort of definitive and final truth. We know the history of the Bible is that it was cobbled together, and edited, and translated, and further interpreted over millennia. It seems the best approach for modern believers is to just adopt some satisfying interpretation and not look too deep into justification.

So if I refer to one of my own sons, and say that he did a book report yesterday, then I'm actually talking about myself too, and him, and both of us as one person at the same time? This is some weird, logical contradictory stuff.

Also, just for your reference if you're interested in your beliefs matching up a little closer to reality, here is a quote from a priest about scholarship surrounding the main verse that trinitarians cite to establish their version of Christianity:

    Former Priest Tom Harpur:
“All but the most conservative scholars agree that at least the latter part of this command [Triune part of Matthew 28:19] was inserted later. The formula occurs nowhere else in the New Testament, and we know from the only evidence available [the rest of the New Testament] that the earliest Church did not baptize people using these words (“in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost”) baptism was “into” or “in” the name of Jesus alone. Thus it is argued that the verse originally read “baptizing them in My Name” and then was expanded [changed] to work in the [later Catholic Trinitarian] dogma. In fact, the first view put forward by German critical scholars as well as the Unitarians in the nineteenth century, was stated as the accepted position of mainline scholarship as long ago as 1919, when Peake’s commentary was first published: “The Church of the first days (AD 33) did not observe this world-wide (Trinitarian) commandment, even if they knew it. The command to baptize into the threefold [Trinity] name is a late doctrinal expansion. …[4]

You might also consider the fact that early Christianity included a sect called Marcionism that believed Yaweh and Jesus were two separate gods, where Yaweh was a malevolent god and Jesus was a good god. That sure fits the story better, especially given that trinity appears to be based on a forgery, yes? Maybe you're worshipping the wrong god...

The true God is the one inside your mind and imagination. However it's exclusively yours alone.

I don't think Jesus himself is the one and only true God, because:

there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus,
    1 Timothy 2:5

For I spoke not from myself, but the Father who sent me, he gave me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak. I know that his commandment is eternal life. The things therefore which I speak, even as the Father has said to me, so I speak."
    John 12:49-50

Jesus therefore answered them, "My teaching is not mine, but his who sent me. If anyone desires to do his will, he will know about the teaching, whether it is from God, or if I am speaking from myself.
    John 7:16-17

About the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, "Eli, Eli, lima sabachthani?" That is, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"
    Mat. 27:46

...saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God, and said, “Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God!”
    Acts 7:55-56

For though there are things that are called "gods," whether in the heavens or on earth; as there are many "gods" and many "lords;" yet to us there is one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we for him; and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom are all things, and we live through him.
    1 Corinthians 8:5-6

According to my new religion of Christian Matrixism, founded by yours truly, Jesus Christ is God's Holy Spirit incarnated. God is the controller of simulations, a reality based virtual world programmer of human consciousness. As such God can disrupt the laws governing our simulated universe in order to resurrect his favorite characters. It's not lights out and game over when the ionic current currents cease flowing across the neurons of God's favorite character's minds. God brings his favorite characters back to life in a paradise virtual reality world.

You are correct. We have been teaching this for over 100yrs. May I add the following:
    1 Cor. 8:6
6 yet there is for us only one God, the Father, who is the Creator of all things and for whom we live; and there is only one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things were created and through whom we live.

    Mal. 2:10
10 Have we not all one Father?
Has not one God created us?
Why do we deal treacherously with one another
By profaning the covenant of the fathers?

2 Cor. 1:3 Good News Translation

3 Let us give thanks to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the merciful Father, the God from whom all help comes!

If you want to know more about true Christianity just reply.

Thanks for pointing out the error (the Christ… not ‘a Christ!) - it was a typo. Edited now!

Well, this forum is (among many other things) about learning what we each think about the scriptures and the True and Only God of the Jews, of the Christians, and the reality of our existence regardless of belief!

So, please, in context of the question, go ahead and tell me more.

I'd always heard "Jesus H Christ".
    Now I read "Jesus a Christ"....poor capitalization
    You're saying it's "Jesus T Christ"?
I'm glad to be an atheist....so few controversies.
