Should couples have sex before marriage or not?

Hey everyone. This is a subject I am interested in. Should couples have sex before marriage or not? People of various religions such as Christianity or Islam would say that couples should not have sex before marriage because it is a sin. However, there is another side to the story which says that couples should have sex before marriage. One of the reasons to have sex before marriage is to know whether or not you are sexually compatible with your significant other or not. Also, you may not know about different sexual issues such as premature ejaculation before you have sex with your significant other. Here are a couple of articles which argue why couples should have sex before marriage.

So, what do you think? Should couples have sex before marriage? Why or why not?

I think that's up to the couple, so I cannot weigh in one way or the other. To me, as long as they're of age and it's entirely voluntary on both their parts, I don't have a problem with it.

If they are committed to a each other, then they shouldn't need a paper and ceremony to deepen their commitment. They should have sex when they are ready to have it, and be under no obligation to wait until they have proceeded with whatever pairing ritual they may practice.

That's for the couple to decide.

Can pre-marital sex be equated to post-marital sex?

I suppose that would depend on one's religious beliefs. A person who believes premarital sex is a sin is going to believe that premarital sex is inferior to sex that takes place after the wedding, which is what I interpret postmarital sex to be.

Personally I think they should have sex, and a trial time living together.

Of course contraceptives are not perfect, - so until they are, - perhaps a trial time living together.

Didn't one of the religions actually do that? Put a board between them on the bed? They had a trial live-in, before the marriage?

The practice was called "bundling", and it was practiced by the New England Puritans and their descendants. In some rural New England areas, it was still in practice as recently as the 1920s. There were several variations on how it was practiced. Typically, though, it involved allowing a man and woman to sleep together in the same bed albeit the woman (and sometimes the man) were sewn into cloth bags with only her (or their) head(s) protruding. Occasionally, a board was placed between them, as a further precaution against intercourse. The two were supposed to spend the night talking, but there is ample evidence that many couples found ways to circumvent the cloth bags and boards and have intercourse.

Only if they film it and put it on pornhub.

Depends on culture and situation.
While there's nothing intrinsically wrong with sex between consenting adults, there are circumstances where it could definitely be hazardous.

Marriage laws should be reworked in general. As it is, a relationship that is already scary is made terrifying by the laws. Its no surprise that people get married, find out they can't live together and then find out they can't get away from the other person or can't get away from an unhealthy relationship. That's much worse than people sleeping around too much, though there is some increased risk of disease. If your goal is to get married unselfishly and benefit each other, perhaps for the purpose of bringing some awesome and well educated children into the world then you have a responsibility to try to find a solid partnership that will work.

life is too short to make sex complicated with "morality". As long as it's is consensual, have sex with people you enjoy spending your time with and enjoy life. We are animals and we have needs and it is wrong to sentimentalise our sexual desires as a prelude to life long monogamy as psychologically humans don't really work that way. We may have lasting relationships but that is not the same as "till death do us part" as it is based on mutual feeling rather than legal arrangements. Sexual repression is more trouble than it's worth. Abstinence is a myth as we all masturbate so rather than society making us feel guilty about our desires we should embrace them and enjoy them. It's not a sin to want to sleep with another person. Why should we turn the ecstasy of an orgasm into the enemy?

We have the 'ghotul' system in one of our aboriginal tribes - The Abujhmar Hill Murias. Boys and girls go to the ghotul (sort of Young peoples' club) every day and sleep there, but remain under the eyes of a matron. They sing, dance, play. Couples can indulge in sex when they get to understand each other. There is a simple procedure to annul a marriage. Extra-marital sex is considered a grave crime and is punishable by death. (But civilization is coming to them)

In Vedic scriptures, there are many types of marriage (8 types actually). The first 4 (Brahma, Daiva, Arsha and Prajapate) are considered to be in accordance with religious principles. The next two (Gandharva and Asura) are considered to be not in accordance with religious principles, yet still acceptable in society in general . The last two (Rakshasa and Paishacha) are considered to be not in accordance with religious principles, and are forbidden.

The marriage in question here is Gandharva Marriage. In this type of marriage, a couple live together out of love and mutual consent and then decide to consummate their relationship. Even if there is no official ritual, ceremony or witness's it is still a form of marriage. So in response to your question, living and having sex with someone ( that arises from mutual consent) is actually a form of marriage. The concept of premarital sex is a highly western concept.
