I was listening to a streamer last night advising people to seek a therapist, which led me to wonder what percentage of people employ a therapist for their mental health on a regular basis. I know RF is a rather small pool of people from which to form a group study, but it is what it is.

I do. Group therapy. I'm getting tested for trauma disorders soon and will be asking to go to a one on one therapist.

Although I don't I was recommended therapy by a plonker on this very forum, because I love my cat. I seriously considered the suggestion until I realised it was pathetic. Still, takes all sorts.

Yes. Honestly I think counseling should be as well utilized as family medicine doctors. Though here in the US some even have difficulty accessing the latter.

Voted "Yes" as whilst I do not have a therapist now, I would definitely get help if I needed it. Since I first got diagnosed, I have had counselling twice and a therapist for about a year to dealing with a combination of depression, anxiety, and trauma. It's been very severe and has stopped me actually having a job or a life, so it is absolutely the right thing to do under those circumstances. :)

I would, but I don't want to pay for it. I did pay for it for several months many years ago. I believe therapy is beneficial. A therapist is someone who has learned about the parts of the brain, most common personality ailments, theories of intelligence and other mind related training. Hopefully they have some life experience, too. They listen, and if they detect any known issues they tell you.

A psychologist is like a therapist, however they can diagnose in addition to listening. Often they will use tests for this along with therapeutic listening and talking. They can do some prescribing.

A Psychiatrist is a medical doctor specializing in psychology who diagnoses and also prescribes drugs. They are the most expensive, and they hold the most responsibility.

Most modern therapy is based on normal psychology, not abnormal psychology. This is because around the 1950s a large cradle-to-grave study began where many thousands of lives were studied. This study began to return results and to change psychiatry, and by the year 2000 had established a much better basis for psychiatric therapy.

I voted 'no' but when I was quite a bit younger, the answer would have been 'yes' especially marriage counseling which was really helpful at the time.

I've never had any such therapy although I would no doubt have benefitted many decades ago, and after later deducing I had probably been suffering from three disorders (that I could determine, although merely an amateur at such). Various events took place so as for them all to disappear over time so that I seem to be as mentally healthy as I would ever want, even if I might not come across as such.

One of the benefits of therapy is being able to unload all your baggage on a non-judgmental, impartial third party who's not your parent, your partner, your friend, your coworker... and who's trained in helping you find insight into your thinking and behavior, and how to work with it.

Like any profession, there are good therapists and bad therapists.

I suggest you get therapy to cope with the trauma of such an communicating with such an ***.

I have talked to a therapist for years. I used to have anxiety disorder, and it was crippling. That's why I started going. I don't have it anymore, but I still have a weekly therapy session. Why? Because its nice to a) have another adult to bounce ideas off of b) my life is a circus and sometimes I need ringleading suggestions.

I've never seen a counselor or a therapist. I did, however, feel the need to do a 2 year meditational/observational study into the nature of PMS because it was affecting my mental ability.
