Just to elaborate on my reaction the first time I saw this (and this wasn't the first time), it was pretty much identical to my reaction to this the first time I saw it:

I have a strong appreciation for musical talent.

I have seen this song make grown men cry. What is your first reaction?
I'm used to songs with 'Hallelujah' in them and am a little jaded about them, but I like the song. I think it gathers a lot of different feelings with its lyrics, talking about the different people, including Christians, who have used 'Hallelujah'. Its poetry not prose so can be interpreted different ways. I think its supposed to be sad but not depressing.

Who is doing the accusing in this part, who is being accused, and why is the word holy or broken. How is there a blaze of light in every word whether or not they know the name. Its similar to a logical form that can have different people slotted in, and he's singing about all of them:

You say I took the name in vain
I don’t even know the name
But if I did, well really, what’s it to you?
There’s a blaze of light in every word
It doesn’t matter which you heard
The holy or the broken hallelujah

For my first reaction you would have had to ask me 37 years ago. I don't remember what the first reaction was but I know that I switched multiple times between too kitschy and appreciation.

This one is less in danger of being accused of being too kitschy:

Not my cup of tea.

Same because my family often plays the Christian radio and it feels like I hear this kind of stuff, making it ordinary. There might be a song by Avril Lavigne and a song by Rise Against that almost makes me cry, though. Some religious music can almost do it too, but usually the stuff so small/unrecognized no one here has probably heard of it before. Meaning YouTube startup singers with melodies added.

I like the song in general.

Its hard to choose which version is best. I would probably choose this one if I had to, but in general the song can carry many different ones :D:

I liked the tune, the vocals, and the arrangement, but the topic was off-putting.

I do like one gospel song, however. You might like it too:

Lyrics
Lay down my dear brothers, lay down and take your rest
Won't you lay your head upon your Savior's breast
I love you, but Jesus love you the best
And I bid you goodnight, goodnight, goodnight
And I bid you goodnight, goodnight, goodnight
Lay down my dear brothers, lay down and take your rest
Won't you lay your head upon your Savior's breast
I love you, but Jesus love you the best
And I bid you goodnight, goodnight, goodnight
And I bid you goodnight, goodnight, goodnight
And I bid you goodnight, goodnight, goodnight
Tell 'A' for the ark, that wonderful boat
Tell 'B' for the beast at the ending of the wood
Oh, well, they eat all the children when they wouldn't be good
I remember right well, I remember right well
Walking in Jerusalem just like John, good night
Lay down my dear brothers, lay down and take your rest
Won't you lay your head upon your Savior's breast
I love you, but Jesus love you the best
And I bid you goodnight, goodnight, goodnight
And I bid you goodnight, goodnight, goodnight
And I bid you goodnight, goodnight, goodnight
