This story is very new, so expect it to change as more information becomes available.

There have been reports of a shooting on London Bridge. Police Cars and Ambulances are on the scene. Scotland Yard has confirmed that they were called to a stabbing near London Bridge around 2pm. One man has been detained and "a number of people" have been injured. Their are images and video footage on twitter showing people running off the bridge and vehicles trying to turn around. The London Ambulance service has declared a "major incident."

As a Precaution, the Metropolitan Police are now treating this as a terrorism related incident.

At this stage, the circumstances relating to the incident at #LondonBridge remain unclear. However, as a precaution, we are currently responding to this incident as though it is terror-related. One man has been shot by police. We will provide further information when possible.

Reading this and related pieces I notice how anxious I have become for readily available details on news... or most other subjects.

I dearly want to know what this incident is all about.

Yeah. We probably won't know anything for certain for at least a couple more hours. But having access to online news-feeds does make it tempting to keep clicking on reload when stuff like this happens.

....

Updates: The Guardian is now reporting that the suspect shot by police has died. The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has released a Statement. The BBC and Guardian is currently publishing eye witness reports on the events.

British Transport Police says London Bridge mainline station remains closed and Tube trains are not stopping at London Bridge Underground station. It advises to check with Transport for London and National Rail before travelling.

Updates:

Assistant Commissioner Neil Basu, is giving a press conference outside Scotland Yard. He confirms the suspect died at the scene. It has been declared a terrorist incident, Basu says.

Due to reports that the suspect was wearing a suicide vest a cordon remains around the area. But Basu said the police now believe the vest was a hoax suicide vest.

What kind of terrorism..?

We don't know yet. At a guess, this is probably as much as we're going to know until the police have completed their investigation, particuarly as the suspect is now dead.

Updates:

Full statement from Assistant Commissioner Basu

I can confirm that at approximately 2pm today Friday the 29th of November. Police were call to a stabbing at a premises near to London Bridge EC1. Emergency services attended including officers from the City of London police and the Metropolitan Police.

A male suspect was shot by specialist armed officers from the City of London police, and I can confirm that this suspect died at the scene.

A number of other people received injuries during this incident. As soon as we can provide further updates on their condition we will. And our heartfelt sympathies go out to everybody who’s been involved in this and is anxiously waiting for information on their loved ones. As soon as we can get that information w will get it to you.

As you would expect due to the nature of the incident, we responded as though this was terrorist related. I’m now in a position to confirm that it has been declared a terrorist incident.

We are working jointly with the City of London police as we continue to respond.

Officers from the met counterterrorism command and now leading this investigation, but I must stress we retain an open mind as to any motive. It would be inappropriate to speculate further at this time.

Due to reports that the suspect may have had an explosive device, specialists offices also attended the scene and wide cordons are in place to ensure there remains no further danger to the public.

However, I can confirm at this time, we believe a device that was strapped to the body of the suspect is a hoax explosive device. Officers continue to carry out meticulous searches in the area to ensure there is no outstanding threat to the public.

Those extensive cordons will remain in place for a considerable time, and I would ask the public please continue to avoid the area. Public Safety is obviously our top priority. We will be enhancing police patrols both in the city and the country.

I would ask anyone with information, image or footage of the incident that can be shared with our investigations aim to do so on the UK police image appeal website.

I would also ask the public to continue to remain vigilant and report any concerns that they have to the police.

I’m not going to take questions at this time. The Prime Minister has asked for a personal briefing and I’ll be heading with the Commissioner of the Met to Downing Street immediately

That is what I expect. He seems from your photo (if it isn't a fake) to have the full-on Allahu Akbar beard at least. :D

No doubt in the coming days we will find out who in his circle went off to fight for Daesh, what websites he has been visiting, when he lost his job/girfriend etc, etc. and all the rest of the dreary details. A bit like when when you have one of your innumerable school shootings. At least, with a knife, he does not seem to have managed to kill anyone. Unlike your innumerable school shootings.

P.S. I was too sanguine (if that isn't an unfortunate choice of word) - 2 people stabbed to death in the attack, apparently.

Exactly. Islamic terrorists are typically less intelligent than schoolchildren. It comes as no suprise that the jihadi is the only one dead.

That was not true of Bin Laden, nor of the people that did the London Underground bombings. But since then it is true there has been an agreeable lack of competence in most of the attacks that were not foiled at source. My favourite was the attempt to blow up a car outside a London night club, using a collection of propane cylinders and cans of petrol. The driver was overcome by fumes and drove the car erratically into a lamp post where he fell out and was arrested. And then there was the "Glasgow fry-up", in which a man drove a 4x4 into a window at Glasgow airport, having set off the inflammable material he was carrying. He had the privilege of being hauled, badly burned, out of the jeep and then beaten up by angry Glaswegians, before later dying in hospital of his burns.

The IRA they are not, as a rule.

Ultimately, clearing the perpetrator and shooting him instantly was a good choice because at the time, they had no idea the vest was a fake.

...Job well done. And congratulations to the concerned citizens for mobbing him and taking his knife. Well done, Londoners..!
