Very nice in the short term. But they're just version 812, and version 813 will pop up soon enough.

Depends. Their record against local enemies is quite good. You cant really hold it against them that they cant defend themselves against US air strikes.

The media seems especially intent on inducing panic lately.

"ISIS: Ten times worse than Al Qaeda, and six times more effective? Find out tonight at 10."

"Midwest Respiratory Virus: The next black death, the American ebola, or a some sort of super cold? Our reporters have the answer."

The Western media always induces panic when the Western military industrial complex spots an opportunity to sell more bombs.

I see this more as the head of Medusa, chop one off, another grows to take its place. It's a virulent cancer that really must be exterminated.

Picky, but it's the Hydra who grows a head. Chop off Medusa's noggin', and she's cooked. Although her decapitated head was still ugly enough to turn others to stone, from memory.

And as per the mythology, the only way to kill the Hydra was to stop chopping heads, and get to the heart.
I suspect it's a pretty good analogy in this case too, but what would you identify as the heart?

While I don't see much to doubt in the article, it is hardly reassuring.

It almost seems to make a point of stating that it hardly matters whether ISIS is remarkable in numbers, power or skill, because the situation there will be unstable in any case.

Which is probably the truth.

Be advised that ALL media seeks to corral your fears within their own designed dialogues and story lines.

This is no wild-eyed conspiracy mind you, it's just "click bait".

"Media" is still the primary servant of advertisers. Fear fire, flood, and firearm murders FIRST! Be afraid (of almost anything!). Click on THIS to validate your concerted fears, then buy THIS (peanut butter, etc.) to calm your nerves.

All better now? Good.

Here's the NEXT BIG THING to click on....

....and, um, buy more BACON!

Compelling guesswork narrative to follow after this next commercial break....

You know, when I wrote that it didn't sound right. Of course, you are right. If you don't know what the heart is... I cannot tell you. :)

The media's ok....... employs a huge mass of folks.
The press has certainly needed to rely on crisis, excitement, insecurity, fear and even sex ...... for decades. The fact that it's headlines can still catch us out is indicative of how adept it has needed to become.

As for ISIL, ISIS, IS or whatever, I hope that media hype will help push our Gov to spend a bit more cash to catch any of these criminals if they should run home when things get tougher.

I do hope that somebody catches Jihadi-John.

I'm gonna go with fanaticism. I suspect if you ask a bunch of people there'd be a lot of answers along similar lines, but with some differences.
In truth, I guess, there will be multiple factors at play. But I think stabbing fanaticism in the heart (metaphorically) is tougher than blowing up an army.

Here is a tip: it is something that feeds on military operations instead of being stopped by them.

Hmmm...it's interesting, though. ISIS/ISIL have stated goals of taking and holding land. That moves them beyond typical asymmetrical tactics. Conventional forces are amazingly effective at reducing infrastructure.

We should keep doing what we are doing. Simply play the game and ISIS will collapse under siege, because they have killed too many people and sinned too badly. Nobody wants to associate with them. Isis fighting against Hezbollah is a bit ironic except that Hezbollah is with Iran. Isis goal will be to involve Israel or the USA in some kind of sin to justify themselves. I expect (I'm guessing) some agitation at the northern end of Gaza in an attempt to connect Isis with sympathy for Gaza and embarrass Hezbollah, because I'm totally the expert on all things tactical and Middle East and stuff.

You get a small cigar. Fanaticism IS a part of it, to be sure. :) The RF rulebook precludes me from giving a full and frank opinion on the matter as it would be considered most unseemly.

If just those military industrial complexes could retool to manufacture something more useful for the world like teddybears or something.
