Is Porn Inherently Degrading?

No..with porn it was you didnt want to "share" your wife..Share what?..Its just a job..Like hard labor..What you mean you want to keep all your wifes hard labor to yourself? And besides that..She would be getting to do what she "likes' to do anyway AND she will make super money doing it!

Ok, to use that, I look at monogamous relationships as being the best. That's my personal belief. Some others don't. I realize that this is only my belief, and that's why I don't want her doing porn. It's not that I think it would degrade her or humiliate her, I just don't want her sleeping with other guys.

The hard labor example was meant to show that just because I would choose for my wife not to do a job doesn't mean there's anything necessarily wrong with that job.

Also, for one, as you already know, my wife doesn't exactly have a high sex drive, so it wouldn't be her doing what she likes to do anyway. And she doesn't like having sex with other guys now that we're together either.

The point is Mball..Its "just a job"..It shouldnt"bother" you if your wife made a living that way..Its NO different than being a secretary using your fingers to type and your brain to do math..Its just another part of your body that you use to earn a living.Everyone wins...

That was the point of the hard labor example. My wife getting a job doing hard labor would bother me, too. There's nothing inherently wrong with doing hard labor, though.

It's obviously different than being a secretary and most other jobs. Every job is different. Stop trying to put words in my mouth and mischaracterize my argument. That's why you're getting nowhere. The difference between being a secretary and being a porn star doesn't mean anything to some people. It does to me. That's the personal choice part.

If you are bothered by it maybe you have some personal hang ups..I don't know..But there is nothing "inherently" bad about your wife being a "porn star" for a living.(as long as its safe)

You're right. There's nothing inherently wrong with my wife being a porn star. It's not so much a personal hang-up that I have, just a particular view of relationships. It's not bad to not want your wife to be a porn star, but it's also not bad to accept that your wife's a porn star.

Now, for the record, I wouldn't mind doing porn with my wife. If people wanted to pay us to have sex, and film it and sell it, I'd be all for it. My wife would never go for it, but I would. So, it's not so much that I mind her doing porn, it's that I mind her having sex with other people (and even other women might be ok, but I'm not sure).

How many porn "stars" are married?(not to pimps I mean a man that loves and cares for their emotional and physical well being??)
There are some. The only ones I can bring to mind are Jenna Jameson and Shy Love, but I'm sure there are more. Their husbands are accepting of their lifestyle. I personally wouldn't be comfortable with my wife sleeping with other people (maybe not even other women, as hot as that would be to see), but they apparently are. And like with any other couple, they have certain boundaries set up to help maintain the trust in their relationships.

I would be interested to know of a devout Christian porn star that felt that God called him/her to that line of work.

It is meant to arouse, not to celebrate suxuality because that is what sells.
Yes, I believe it is degrading to both men and women, some of it is... insanely ridiculous.

OK, first a friendly reminder: this is not the Eros Room, so please keep it PG-13. I didn't post it in the Eros Room because I wanted to get a wider audience.

To be honest, I am not into porn. Frankly, it disgusts me. Not because I'm a prude, but because of its attitude. I've never seen porn that didn't describe its women as b****es, sluts, and/ or whores. I've never seen porn that actually celebrated sexuality.

Which makes me wonder, is porn inherently degrading? Is it possible to make porn that celebrates sexuality as something beautiful and sacred?

What do you think?

Bonus question: does porn degrade men and women equally?

quick questions, what is the eros room?

quick questions, what is the eros room?
I see you found it. :D

Excuse me if this comment has already been given as I haven't read through the whole thread.

I cannot answer the OP for someone else. If you find watching porn degrading then it is for you. You cannot answer for the person performing in porn films unless they've told you they feel degraded.

Some people think it's degrading to work at McDonalds, others do not.

No, I don't think it's inherently degrading.

I don't think it's possible for any act to be inherently degrading, since degradation exists in the mind. It's just like there's no act that's inherently respectful, or rude. It depends on the culture and the experiences of the people performing and viewing the act. In our culture, being paid to have receptive sex is seen by many people as degrading, but that's something that could change over time.

I don't like mainstream porn much, but it is only one small example of all the forms that pornography can take, and most of them don't fixate on female submission (I don't think erotic submission of either gender is inherently degrading, but that's another topic). I have a site that I go to (not going to post a link, we're not in the Eros room) that is all-female porn exclusively produced (planned, directed, sold, etc) by women, for women. If you want porn that breaks away from the mainstream stereotypes, it's not that hard to find with a Google search (although it might not be free).

I don't think of most porn as degrading, at least not what I've seen. I do find that it reduces sex to the level of an anatomy lesson, which is why I don't share the fascination that most of the straight males that I've known seem to have with it.

Now, find me some decent softcore stuff on Cinemax in the wee hours, and I'll take a look.

Yeah, they sell that one at the t-shirt stands down at the beach. And it's rather tame compared to some of the other slogans and attempts at humor.

Not only porn is degrading, but the use of the male and especially female body in advertisement is offensive and degrading. It objectifies both men and women as mere objects.
I think photography, or art may celebrate sexuality as something beautiful and sacred when it is done in a tasteful manner.
Women are degraded more.
