[This is not a debate]
It may seem silly to some, but this is one of the things that keeps me up at night. It is the story of Aisha Bint Abi Bakr, the youngest wife of Muhammad. She was, in my opinion, the victim of child sexual abuse that has been immortalised, swept under the rug, and even defended. This is not a thread for those defenders.
Islamic sources say Muhammad married Aisha when she was six and had sex with her when she was nine. Aisha, upon Muhammad's death, was not allowed to remarry and she never had any children, probably because of problems caused by having sex so young. To make matters worse, this poor girl has been slated for centuries by some Shia Muslims who have a profound dislike for her, as if she hasn't been through enough.
As a victim of such child abuse myself, it just makes me want to weep. I just want to wrap my arms around that little girl, kiss her and tell her,
Aisha, I'm sorry.
You're a brave little girl, and very strong, in a culture that offers you no way out. I'm sorry that man hurt you in ways you probably don't understand. If I could, I would canonise you as the Saint of Survivors. Saint Aisha. I would, I really would. I love you. I hope you are at peace now.
