Would you still be a good person.
How would you plan your future? IOW what would you do with the money?

If you gave 1/2 a billion away to charity, would you feel good about keeping the rest? Assuming your felt any guilt for being a 1%ter in the first place.

I suspect I'd go about the world just randomly helping people I came across who needed it.
At least for a while. Until I became totally corrupted by all that money.

I would support all sorts of charities, but I would spoil the heck out of myself too. My baser desires would not be terribly expensive.

I wouldn't feel guilt at all. I'd thank God, pay my tithe and offering to the Church firstly and do more to sponsor my diocese and monasteries wherever I am living or decide to live. I would then make sure my parents, further family that I know, and friends had what they needed or didn't have to work at all and support their dreams (depending on how close they are to me beforehand). I'd then get the tutors and books I wanted for my interest, travel, and enjoy myself with those who were close to me beforehand (for I would not trust gaining friends after this happened if it were known, if it is not known then it would be different). I'd go see all I wanted to see and finish my education as I desired under whom I desired.

I have no idea what I would do with the rest of it, but probably find some use, as to me money is not an end in itself but is meant to be used. Charities I am personally invested in and political movements I'd want to succeed probably, in addition to trying that "money makes money" thing. I would not indiscriminately give to people for it is said "let your alms sweat in your hands until you know to whom to give."

I don't know if I'd be good then, I'd hope I would be but anything is possible, and in my opinion the Lord keeps some in poverty so they do not fail in the test for they certainly would (although there are other reasons for poverty also). Perhaps I am one who would fail, Lord have mercy.

Well it's more than enough for charity. I would probably play Santa and find people with problems and help em out but not in a way that's public. I want to be a mystery benefactor.

I would also help out my sister so she could retire if she wants.

I would certainly intend to live comfortably, well off but not luxurious and then set up a proper studio and devote the rest of my life to the fine arts. Particularly with animation and storytelling in mind.

Of course never forget the wife. ;0])

I'd never talk about it. Just keep it tucked away, and help when I could. I wouldn't even tell my family, or they'd blow it all.

I don't have many needs, and I'm quite content with my life -- which I hope will last a while longer but is, even I must admit, somewhat likely to end before I'm entirely ready.

I have no great need to spend gobs of money treating myself. Some theatre, a few meals out, and beer. (I don't drink liquor, and though I enjoy a nice wine, one glass with dinner is about enough.)

Therefore, I wouldn't need that billion dollars right away, because I can already afford what I'm doing. So I think I would set it up in such a way that I could run it down to zero in about 20 years (I'll be gone by then) in a charity supporting some things that I care about.

My favourite charities are the Children's Aid Societies around the world (I was an orphan), improving education for those whose families can't afford university, and spaces like "Variety Village," which in Toronto offers wonderful activities for kids with disabilities.

Yes, I'd be happy with that. A billion seems like a lot, but in a troubled world, it doesn't go far -- so we kind of have to choose, don't we?

I would pay off all my fake bills.

    I would assist my family.

I would believe I would use the money wisely to fund organised human assistance in housing medical care water supply...growing foods by other means. So my family could go back to just being family.

I don't truly know, but for some reason I am strongly inclined to think that I know.

I don't think it corrupts you so much as completely alters your thinking, your memory, your focus. You function differently I think, but you can bounce back. I have heard of several biographies that suggest this is a typical experience. I think its like having a powerful magnet strapped to the side of your head, and your sense of north changes. Maybe it is similar to the effect slot machines have on addicted gamblers. I wonder if there are any collections of such stories?

I like make a wish foundation. Those kids are on the way back to the abyss.

A billion would certainly grant a few wishes for a kid that wouldn't get much in life that others will enjoy.

    Money well spent.

I deride San Francisco for a lot of things but not this time.

    I'll never forget "Bat Kid".

Happily Miles Scott's cancer went into remission.

I can't help but wonder if the experience helped in any way.

    A billion dollars of wishes...

I would not accept the money, but if they wanted to give away 1 billion they could give it to the poor people in this world.

Don’t know exactly what stories would interest you, but if you want to get into the mind of a gambler, you might try The Gambler by Fyodor Dostoevsky, and Shut Up And Deal by Jesse May.

God, I hope not. That would be so boring. :D

Honestly, going with the "dull version", I'd stick the billion dollars in a bank and live off the interest. Even if it's a 1% rate of interest, that's still $10 million a year.

Then the question becomes, what do I do with $10 million a year for the rest of my life? After I've bought a nice house, then we can get to the fun bit. Because I have no idea.

Not much need for large amounts of money so 99.9% would go to charities or good causes, and the rest would mostly be used to make sure the 99.9% was not wasted - as in overseers. But even that amount might not have that much impact on the many areas that need money and/or resources. So actually determining where the priorities lie would be rather onerous.

I wonder how far it would go.
How about if you created a company that provided training, and secure work for them?
The larger you grew the company the more you could help.

That would have to be a nonprofit way of helping because I do not wish to accept money for helping people.
Nor do I personally have the skills to manage something like that, so it would be better if that idea was able to be done, people who know what they were doing it could do it.

Probably the same answer as others in this thread. Help out friends, family, the needy. Donate to charities and organizations which I believe can help the largest amount of people. It's such a massive sum of money that I would be fine keeping only really a smaller part of it for myself.

A billion is much too much to simply give away. With that amount of money I could start a lot of small and medium businesses with an agenda of being sustainable, charitable and friendly to their workers/owners and even customers. That way it would make a lot of people happy over a long time and generate a constant flow of charitable money.
Once I have set that up it won't bother me too much getting corrupted by the rest of the money.
