The Creation and Fall narratives are heavily laced with symbolism from beginning to end, so there's literally no need to take them as if they were historical accounts. If we get hung up on "Did this really happen this way?", then it's all too easy to miss the far more important question of "What is the author(s) really trying to teach us in terms of morals and values?".

Whether Adam & Eve existed as real people is totally irrelevant, especially when compared to "the moral of the story"-- actually "morals".
