I don't get anime

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll try both of those. I must admit that some of what attracted me to Ghost in the Shell was also the Russian in the theme music.

I loved Rurouni Kenshin (AKA Samurai X for any non-Americans here) with a PASSION as a kid, and still do, especially now that I'm old enough to understand the story. There are a few excellent OVA's for it as well.

A great anime movie was Princess Mononoke, by the same guy who did Howl's Moving Castle. Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind was also fantastic.

My youngest brother is into Rurouni Kenshin, and I've been meaning to get around to watching it. From what I understand, though, as far as anime's go, it deviates from the manga moreso than any other.

And Princess Mononoke was ok.

I haven't seen anyone mention Akira yet.

I mentioned it; the fact that it didn't really do much for me.

I watched Rurouni Kenshin like 10 years ago. I don't think I saw the whole series, though.

Basically it's about a samurai dude who used to be bad, but now he's really kind. He fights with a sword that has the blade on the back side rather than the front side, so when he fights people he doesn't kill them.

I thought the height of DBZ was Goku fighting against Freeza. Two characters who are at completely opposite ends of the good/evil spectrum, and the Saiyan race was avenged by a Saiyan who refused to be a part of the Saiyan ways. But then again Vegeta's character development in the Buu Sage was pretty good, and I thought it was awesome when he becomes possessed but still tells Babidi no.

From what I understand, Toriyama had absolutely nothing to do with that series.
He oversaw the production of the earlier parts of it, and left shortly after it began. I agree GT was crap.

Princess Mononoke was one I really enjoyed.

Because, of course, a reverse-blade sword (essentially working as a steel club), has absolutely no chance of killing anyone. lol

I love Rurouni Kenshin. ^_^

Well he's also ridiculously skillful and manages to hit them in just the right spot every time. :p

I agree with "not getting" a lot of anime, mainly because of rampant fan service. I tend to avoid popular anime for that reason.

...and yet somehow I liked Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood.

I read the manga and loved it. I couldn't get past the first episode of the anime though, it irritated me for some reason.

Inuyasha was approximately twice the number of volumes as FMA and was produced over a longer period of time. Approximately 12 years.

The manga was. The anime, despite having a few filler arcs, lasted considerably less and sort of just stops in mid-motion without much of a resolution.

An unfortunately common problem for anime, including some famous ones.

And FMA was itself somewhat long; longer than stand-alone series but shorter than Naruto, DBZ, Bleach, or InuYasha.

One thing I mentioned in my Naruto reference is that Japan produces content that completely defies western concepts of age. Naruto has, for example, lame sexual jokes and genocide. The main character is a kid that fights against dudes that rip eyes out. Porn is referenced from time to time in the series, since some of the characters read porn.

Porn in Japan seems to be of little concern to anyone. Nor is the challenge of realistic age-related behavior at all exclusive to Naruto, either; even Pokemon is basically the tale of a 10-year older travelling with only a couple of slightly older companions (usually afoot, no less) for what seems to be a few years.

It seems to be part of the point, even.

In terms of age-appropriate-ness, Japan is much more lax. Read the first volume of Dragonball, then read the letters page where a mother wrote in saying her first-grader son loves the series. Yeah... it's supposed to be a kids' manga. (And keep in mind, in Japan, the manga isn't separated into Dragonball and Dragonball Z; it's all just Dragonball.)

But even that one makes some sense when compared to another kids' show that's actually gotten me and MoonWater to shudder at its approach to certain subject matters... Season 0 Yugiou. ...yeah, I think people who've seen it know what I'm talking about.

Twilight, not bright nor dark, good nor bad.
^ Yeah, it's more the anime style I don't get into, not the storylines
I guess it's an acquired taste.

I just enjoy all the the strange and weird eye candy the Japanese are so famous for. I find the gross exaggerations of expression, features, environments, and what not an added bonus. Kinda stays with you after watching, making you want to watch all the more. At least for me it does. :0)
