How Texas Helps its Teens Get Pregnant

There's a full post on this topic here. And a post on the effectiveness of Abstinence here.

The gist: a report just released shows that 96% of Texas school districts teach abstinence only sex education -- even though Texas ranks the third highest state in the US for teen births, and even though 90% of Texans want children taught comprehensive sex ed. It seems special interest groups (i.e. of the Religious Right) are thwarting the will of the vast majority of Texans in order to further their own fantasy that abstinence is the only proper sex ed. Read the linked to posts if you can.

Bottom line: denying your own nature leads to problems.

It's like "keep-a-lid-on-it-only" pressure release :p

Damn the Religious Right, they are the cause of all the worlds evils! If only we could be rid of them once and for all, all would be right with the world.:(

It's reasonable to want them rid from schools, especially when studies show that all would be better with the world if the Religious Right got their self-righteous paws off our kids' sex ed.

With any luck, the evangelicals will all just disappear sometime soon.

What with all that socialism from the bama.

Well the good news is 90% want comprehensive sex ed.Which makes me wonder..why arent the parents doing a bettter job.If we have the 3rd highest rate of teen preganancies but 90% sound as if they want the kids to learn the realities..why arent the parents teaching them?

My kids didnt learn "abstinence only" in school. They just showed them how the plumbing works.I read the little pamplet my son got.It didnt recommend either way when to have sex or when not to.That advice should come strictly from the parents.

Tell any teenager not to do something and they will want it all the more.
Seems as though the Education Authorities needs a little educating themselves!

I disagree.

The numbers show an amazing drop in the levels of teen pregnancy and STV`s in the decade our public schools actually embraced comprehensive sex ed.

Western European countries have been practicing comprehensive sex ed for decades and have minuscule teen preg rates compared to ours.

The data shows what works, what doesn`t and what is diametrically opposed to the stated goals.

Abstinence Only Ed would fall under "diametrically opposed"

It`s not the educational authorities causing the problem.

This one directly belongs to the religious right and the political clout they hold.

I'm not surprised at this given that this is the state that also helps dumb down education for the entire nation.

Too bad the Gabler's didn't take their crap organization with them when they passed.

You dont have to disagree.I agree with you.

I just called my son to find out if any of this stuff went on in his sex ed.And Im shocked. He said it was like abstinece..abstinence,,abstinence...they did teach them the different birth control and sex sex information...But then went on to give them examples of how havign sex before you are married can ruin your life...(not the teachers)

He said two guest speakers came in to tell them how they coudl get stuck for the rest of thier life having to work two jobs and be poor livign with someone they didn't like..That you will ruin your life.

He gave me an example..He said the speakers said..Here is what will happen..

John and Lucy had been together many months..They were so happy. They loved going to McDonalds together and having a hamburger and sharing a milkshake together. It was there favortie thing to do together..Then they had sex..

After they had sex they could barely stand to look at each other from all the bitterness. There favorite thing to do together wasn't fun anymore.

He said that when the speakers left the kids were like..(roll eyes)..And the teacher said .."yeah they were a little strange".

Good point. Your son's a smart cookie. It's like calling a class on NOT doing arithmetic a math class. "Billy and Sally had four apples. Then Jimbob put another five apples into the fruit basket. Sally said 'how many apples is that each?' Satan heard her and tempted them to divide the apples between them. God was furious and they were cast out of the garden for all eternity."

Ha Ha!!!

You know whats funny? My son used an anaolgy I didnt post..He said that would be like going to church and being taught atheism.

You know I was completely ignorant to what they were 'preaching" him.He said it was in health class in 9th grade.

I was referrring to in the 5th grade when i had to sign a form giving permision for some sex information in my first post.I didnt realize he had mandatory sex ed later.

He also said the school has a "no condom rule".The thinking in his words was it would be "promoting wrecklesness".

My mother preached "abstinence only' to me even AFTER I had a baby at 14.The doctor recommended BC for me.She said "thats rediculous Im not going to give her permission to have sex..she is not ALLOWED to have sex just becasue she already has".

The doctor told her she was making a mistake. That once sexually active statistically I woudl continue to be on some level from that point on.. My mother said well she isnt going to do that anymore RIGHT Lana?I remember sitting there with a burnt red face completely humiliated.

Ahhhh, Texas yet again conforms to its steretype as a backwards anti-education pit. It's a shame particularly when I know several folks from the state that don't fit the steretype and love living there. The stats are consistent: teaching sex ed' decreases teen pregnancy and stds. And sex ed' should expand to include all sexual orientations regardless.

Anyway, kids shouldn't be learning about sex in the classroom. They should learn like every other teen in Texas or California- a weekend in Tijuana with a "borrowed" '81 Honda Civic, 40$, and all the fulana a gringo kid can buy with said money.

Well its really an unfair "stereotype" if you ask me.If you notice the research offered that 90% of Texans are pro-comprehensive sex ed.It seems despite that..the few in power have what they think is a better idea for our children.
