I know that where I live there are plenty of "help wanted" signs around, but they are all at places that will not pay anything even remotely resembling a wage that anyone living here could actually live on. Which is why they cannot keep their help. I am also noticing that the people taking those jobs are the elderly, who cannot survive on their monthly social security retirement check, because prices have been going up while their checks have remained stagnant, or even decreased. And of course the republicans are constantly cutting the budget for social security and medicare, and threatening to cut more, or all of it, which a great many of these folks need to stay alive.
Greed is running amok among the wealthy elite and the politicians that serve them in this country. And it's only going to keep getting worse until we as a people finally put a stop to it. Because greed has no natural limit, and can never be satiated. It has to be stopped by some outside force.
Nonsense, again.
Those help wanted signs you see are there because those who would normally do these jobs have found something better.
Who said any employer had to pay a wage that people could live on ? In the labor market, the employee chooses where they will work. When I was a kid, raised in the town where the very first Mc Donalds was, Students worked there to make a few bucks for dates and car parts.
Flipping burgers was never considered a career, just a part time job. People who are qualified to do nothing better need to look at themselves, not the job. I would support training these people to do better, but I am not sure how successful that would be.
Social Security checks are tied to the overall cost of living, and adjusted up, or not at all.
Republicans are constantly cutting the Budget for Social Security ? That is utter pap, if it were true, my checks would have gone down, they haven´t.
Here is part of the reason we are 21 trillion in debt. Politicians of both parties, but democrats are greater offenders, steal the cash from the Social Security trust fund, and leave worthless IOU´s that are never repaid. They cannot stand money existing under government control, that they can´t spend on pet projects, so they just steal it.
Social Security was designed as a retirement supplement, not as the primary financial vehicle for retirement.
I too am saddened to see old geezers like me, having to work because they can´t live on SS. Yet, they had a working lifetime to prepare for retirement, and apparently they did not.
It sounds cruel, but should I be responsible for the poor choices of others ?
I took advantage of 12 years of free education, and busted my butt working for my degreeś, The Mc Donalds careerist has the same options. There are a plethora of reasons why these folk did not prepare for life, and virtually all are tied to their choices.
Same for the folks struggling on SS. I am afraid it is going to get worse, since the SS trust fund is going to go broke as more and more baby boomers retire.
In the beginning five workers paid the SS benefit for 1 worker, today it is down to two, and wll go lower.
It is very complicated, but there are more dynamics at work here, than greed.
The government cannot live within itś means, give, give, give and spend more and more, borrow more and more,
The ¨poor¨ in America have color TVś, cell phones, video games, cars etc. Compared to the poor in the rest of the world, they are doing pretty well.
I most likely won´t be alive when the loans leading to the massive debt are called in, but it is going to be a tragedy for all, along the lines of the great depression. The 50% who work and pay taxes will be swept away along with every one else..................................
