Drinking...

Note that your evidence relies on the key phrase "too much alcohol". This implies that lower amounts are fine, and non-damaging. Note that my post was asking for evidence that alcohol is *always* intrinsically damaging, not "some-of-the-time".

Surely the fact that the substance isn't freely available to children and in some countries adults deems it intrinscally bad for you???

However;

" a report made public in 1997 by researchers at Boston university summarised that alcohol has a negative effect on ANY person "

clearly if you choose to ignore this you do so at your own risk . .

I hear you my brother from another mother. These are my findings.

ALCOHOL'S BAD FOR YOU AND OTHERS

April is ``Alcohol Awareness Month.'' The National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence asks us to be aware that there is no ``safe'' level of alcohol consumption and that to use alcohol is to put yourself and others at risk. Alcohol is a drug as well as an intoxicant and is no less dangerous because it is legal.
During April, adults who use alcohol are encouraged to abstain for one weekend and promote natural ``highs'' that can be obtained through exercise, meditation and involvement in activities. Abstention sets a good example for young people who need to understand that you can have a good time without getting a chemical high.
Drinking even small amounts of alcohol results in more false positives when testing for AIDS.
To maintain a healthy immune system and lessen fatigue, many specialists recommend abstinence from alcohol use.
Smaller amounts of alcohol dramatically speed up the rate that HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) multiplies in the human blood. Just three beers over a period of two days causes a tenfold increase. These relatively small amounts of alcohol also impair the body's resistance to HIV.
Alcohol use is not only costly to our health but also to our pocketbooks. Americans spend about three times as much on alcoholic beverages as they do on fruits and vegetables.

Please note the last sentance on my post that says "Americans spend about three times as much on alcoholic beverages as they do on fruits and vegetables. "
This was not my comment it was from the article. I'm not attacking Americans

That's because alcohol is more expensive. Honestly, I can't say how much more I spend on alcohol than fruits and veggies, but it is rediculous. I hardly eat any fruits and veggies, but I have a glass of wine every day. That's $9 a bottle, and two bottles a week, coming to $18. I spend about $10 a week on fruits and veggies, so that's not quite 3x what I spend...

It depends on where you are. There are countries that allow consumption of alcohol by children. I certainly wouldn't advocate it. Laws do not equate what is right. Slavery and marital rape were both once legal in many countries.

Can you link to the full report? Because this is the kind of evidence I am actually looking for.

I don't know that this could be considered an unbiased source...

I hate the taste of alcohol but I enjoy feeling mildly drunk so generally I just avoid it altogether. There just isn't any point and I, personally, always feel bad emotionally when I sober up.

All I have stated is that as alcohol is bad for you, we should remove it from society, therefore removing tempation from the weak.

If we start removing things from society because *some* people are "weak" and can't control themselves, we're all going to be living in little cages.

As for alcohol being bad for you, I do believe the medical community has come out and said that some is actually good for you and prevents certain diseases, no?

Clearly then, it would be far better to be shot by a sober individual, mown down by a driver on a cell phone and abused by anyone who has not had alcohol. People will use ANYTHING as a reason for their actions: it gives them an "out". Instead, we should hold them responsible for their actions while impaired.

Blast it! I haven't been here in months and it still won't let me frubal you for this one, ND! Excellent post!

I have two points, at least, to debate in this thread. First of all, do you drink alcoholic beverages? Why? What do you drink, brand wise and type wise? Why? What benefits are there to drinking? What negatives are there?

Secondly why are certain alcohols considered more intellectual? Aren't all alcohols the same drug? Why is wine considered more intellectual than beer? Even hard alcohol drinks are considered more intellectual than beers, or, at least, that's the impression I get.

I'm going to try and restrain myself from responding to the oh so many other topics that have been generated in this list and stick to the topic of drinking.

No I do not drink alcoholic beverages. Not because I think it's wrong but because I am strongly affected by one drink and I don't like how it makes me feel....either at the time or the next day. When I go out for girl's night, I drink decaf iced tea or water and they usually drink beer or margaritas. I don't have a problem unless they choose to get snockered and then I leave. I have never found drunk or buzzed people even slightly entertaining. Drunk people are only funny to other drunk people.

Benefits to drinking alcohol....here are a just a few sites that promote the healthful benefits of *moderate* drinking and keep in mind that common sense also applies. It is not healthful for a pregnant woman to drink moderately, for example. You'll find the negatives...even to moderate drinking....in these same articles.

http://www2.potsdam.edu/hansondj/AlcoholAndHealth.html

http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/alcohol/SC00024 (interestingly, their pros are related to moderate drinking while their cons are related to excessive drinking. I would have been more impressed if their cons were also related to moderate drinking....or perhaps they are nonexistent in moderation?)

http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/medicalnews.php?newsid=3968

Ok...that said...until they do more specific studies, there is no way of determining whether moderate alcohol consumption actually is healthy or whether people who drink moderately also have a healthier life style...cause and effect.

I live by the motto of everything in moderation and if that kills me, well so be it. I'm dying from the day I'm born anyway and one way or another something is going to kill me.

As for why some drinks are considered "intellectually" superior....I can answer that in one word. Snobbery.

I'd like to point out that even one glass of wine a day could increase a woman's chance of breast cancer by 6%, according to one study. If you are at a high risk for breast cancer already, it might not be a good idea to drink.

If you get into the original language you find he was really refering to new wine there. :D

BTW, can you give us the referent verse??? It reminds me of Proverbs 20:1, but you indicate that Jesus said this. Very curious.

Check out this verse from the OT:

Ecclesiastes 9:7 Go, eat your food with gladness, and drink your wine with a joyful heart, for it is now that God favors what you do. 8 Always be clothed in white, and always anoint your head with oil. 9 Enjoy life with your wife, whom you love, all the days of this meaningless life that God has given you under the sun— all your meaningless days. For this is your lot in life and in your toilsome labor under the sun. 10 Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might, for in the grave, where you are going, there is neither working nor planning nor knowledge nor wisdom. John 2.3, from the True Fundamentalist Christian Bible:

And when they wanted wine, the mother of Jesus saith unto him, Kool-Aid, Kool-Aid, tastes great! Wish we had some, can't wait!
