Absolutely sickening. My heart and prayers go out to the families affected by the tragedy.

I was on my Facebook page. My daughter-in-law posted her sorrow in the face of this tragedy, and one of her friends asked if she was going to get her daughter (my 6 year old granddaughter) a cell phone.

Although I agree with the gun control thing, trumpeting while the blood isn't dry is kind of cold.
You've got a point. But historically, as soon as the tragedy-porn news stories are done, people forget about discussing the gun control issue. Did I miss where the USA implemented nationwide gun offender registration after the Aurora shooting? Are we having a reasonable, constructive discussion on balancing individual rights with public safety?

What the hell do their families do to get past this?
As the father of two, I don't even want to think about it.

While I don't really disagree, I'm honestly with Wirey right now. We can argue gun laws tomorrow.

All I can really think about is that this was just days after the Oregon mall shooting. This kind of thing really scares me.

I remember that while going through High School, virtually every day at the back of my mind I thought that a shooting might occur. I still feel that now and then as I go through college.

Even though I know statistically I'm FAR more likely to die by car accident (which is also statistically very unlikely), it's hard to feel safe when I see news like this.

My thoughts as well. If brought up immediately it is deemed inappropriate but if you wait then it quickly is condemned as bringing up the past. I myself am rather sick of all the massacres being justified as the cost of freedom. Yet gun control alone won't fix the problem but a complete renovation of our National Health Care system and getting people with mental illnesses the help they need is on top of the agenda as well.

No one says gun control is going to fix all the problems. There will always be nutters. But the killing potential with modern firearms is so massive that we ignore that aspect of the issue at our peril.

Would the Arizona shooter have been able to kill six and wound thirteen in a matter of seconds with a billy club? Would the Aurora shooter have been able to kill twelve and wound dozens in a minute with a pair of switchblades? Come on, folks.

When a mentally sick person shot children in Scotland we did something about guns. Soon the gun lobby over in the 'States will be screaming to arm six-year-olds so that they can 'defend themselves'. These horrors have causes. Why do they happen? Jesus said it was so that the will of God should be made manifest - i.e. that we should do something about it.

Maybe (ah!) I'm just screwed nuts or insensible or something, but why would it be inappropriate to discuss how to avoid a tragedy while the mourning is still going on?

Does the discussion about gun control seem unduly opportunistic? Is that it?

Maybe.

It just feels... wrong.

But maybe that's just my own empathy speaking: the parents of those dead children probably won't want to hear it for weeks.

I don't think there are any easy solutions to be gin to solve this. This is another sad day for American and even the world.
