From the BBC ...

Pakistani girl shot over activism in Swat valley, claims Taliban
Malala Yousafzai, 14, attacked for championing education for girls and highlighting Taliban atrocities, says group

A 14-year old Pakistani activist who championed education for girls has been shot in the head by a Taliban gunman.

The attack on Malala Yousafzai, who became famous for highlighting Taliban atrocities, happened as she sat in a bus preparing to leave the school grounds in Mingora, the main city in the Swat valley which was the scene of intense fighting between the army and the Taliban in 2009.

At least one other girl was also hurt in the attack on Tuesday that a Taliban spokesman, Ehsanullah Ehsan, quickly claimed the group was responsible for.

He said the teenager's work had been an "obscenity" that needed to be stopped: "This was a new chapter of obscenity, and we have to finish this chapter."

Doctors said the gunshot wounds to her head and neck were serious and that she might have to be moved to a larger hospital in Islamabad or Peshawar.

Fazal Maula Zahid, a member of Swat Qaumi Jirga, a local anti-Taliban group working for peace in the valley, said the gunman had asked which of the girls was Malala.

One of the girls pointed to Malala, but the activist denied it was her. The gunman shot both of the girls.

May God bless her and her family. This girl was extremely brave to speak out against the Taliban and these other extremists that threaten humanity itself.

This is extremely depressing. I'm not sure i understand what state she's in, but i hope she can survive this despicable attack.

I wish her and the other girl shot alongside her a full and speedy recovery. She is a true heroine.
And I call curses on the people who committed this sick and cowardly act, and those who continue to justify it.

What? Me worry?
It's unfortunate that there are people that wish to destroy innocence and silence truth. (What did the poster in the subway say about not supporting the savage.) May she survive this and grow stronger.

The poster is an appeal to savage bigotry. Shame on you for polluting this thread with such filth.

After reviewing my previous post I wish to make amends to Jayhawker. Although I wanted to suggest he light an aroma candle and pour a large cup of get-over-yourself, my better angels spoke up. I apologize if you found my posts offensive. I certainly did not mean them to be.

I wish Malala a speedy and complete recovery. I sincerely hope more and more girls model after her and that the Taliban gets the message that girls and women won't be silenced through fear. Enough of that nonsense!

Depressing and sad indeed.

Saw a bit about this on the news last night. Seems she was shot point blank in the head with a 9 mm. There's massive cerebral damage, but her vitals are stable and she's begun to move voluntarily.

Hopefully, if she recovers, she can stay in the UK. I would hate to see her sent back to Pakistan where her life would still probably be in danger. I hate to say this, but when the US and their allies leave Afghanistan I really do not think that the Afghanistan army or police can prevent the Taliban from coming back. I really do not want to see any more US and their allies being killed for something that can not be stopped; However, I can't imagine what is going to happen when they leave. I don't have an answer and I don't think anyone else does.

After the headlines have died down this brave young woman who championed the right of young girls to get an education, who valued intellectual pursuits and who had personal dreams and ambitions; will probably be re-learning to walk and talk and struggling to remember and understand basic things due to brain damage (if she survives that long).

And the evil individuals who did this to a child are still trying to justify their act and are threatening to do the same to others...

After the headlines have died down milions will continue to stand for and work for progress inspired, in part, by Malala and others like her.

Indeed, we can not allow thugs with guns to dictate public discourse and especially to silence those in favor of progress and liberation of women from backwards tribal tyrants.
