Maybe Communist China ought to realize who's actually playing with fire.

May cooler heads prevail over childish sabre rattling.

If you think starting a war over Taiwan will protect American freedom then I've got a bridge to sell you.

I...must...not...succumb to whatsboutism and mention Trump's disregard for treaties...

Darn it

Seriously, the message it would send is clear. Times have changed and we are scaling back our empire. We are not going to start a war over Taiwan.

.
We won't. It will be Communist China that starts a war over Taiwan.

Attempts by us to rule the world? Not sure what you mean. In this case we are talking about their neighbor and we have no business getting involved militarily there, in my opinion.
Sunrise is alluding to the appeasement policy. When Germany, long ago, start to blitzkrieg into countries they first went into Poland. The nations discussed what to do, and they decided that appeasement was the answer. The nations decided Germany would be satisfied with Poland and that there was no point having a global war over it. This did not work. Hence Sunrise is suggesting its the same with Taiwan, that appeasement will only lead to more invasions and territory grabs.

Just my $.02 cents.
We have a treaty with Tawian. This treaty is the Sino-American Mutual Defense Treaty (see Sino-American Mutual Defense Treaty - Wikipedia). Basically what it says is:
The treaty consists of ten main articles. The content of the treaty included the provision that if one country came under attack, the other would aid and provide military support.

The treaty was limited in application to the defense of the island of Taiwan and the Pescadores only. Kinmen and Matsu were not protected by this treaty. Therefore, the US stood aside during the Second Taiwan Strait Crisis. The treaty also discouraged the Republic of China from initiating any military action against mainland China, since only Taiwan and Pescadores were included and unilateral military actions not supported.

Now the only problem with the idea that some of you have is the idea that the U.S. should not come to the aid of Taiwan is in that we have other mutual defense treaties with other countries. If Taiwan came under attack and the U.S. stood down what signal would this send to the other countries we have treaties with? Very simple...you can not trust the U.S. to live up to their commitments.

As a military veteran I abhor war, but I value my countries freedom more than I abhor war. Therefor we must standup to Chinese aggression because once the Chinese Communist party sees that we will give up anything to avoid a armed conflict with China and or Russia either one or both of them will continue to test the U.S.

I wouldn't want to see it, but I don't know what the future would hold if we didn't live up to our commitments.
If only the warmongers saw as much value in honouring international commitments when it came to things like the Paris Accord.

The earth is but one country and mankind its citizens.

The turmoil created by rogue nations reminds me of this advice;

"True civilization will unfurl its banner in the midmost heart of the world whenever a certain number of its distinguished and high-minded sovereigns—the shining exemplars of devotion and determination—shall, for the good and happiness of all mankind, arise, with firm resolve and clear vision, to establish the Cause of Universal Peace. They must make the Cause of Peace the object of general consultation, and seek by every means in their power to establish a Union of the nations of the world. They must conclude a binding treaty and establish a covenant, the provisions of which shall be sound, inviolable and definite. … In this all-embracing Pact the limits and frontiers of each and every nation should be clearly fixed, the principles underlying the relations of governments towards one another definitely laid down, and all international agreements and obligations ascertained." Abdu’l-Baha, The Secret of Divine Civilization, p. 64.

China is far far more capable than Iraq or Afghanistan.
Those wars cost us only several trillion dollars.
And this war would be in China's back yard.
They could launch & win it before we even had
time to get sufficient materiel there.
Also, we'd be fighting a hi-tech enemy.
Expect major losses of big spendy ships.
And for what?
Further, I would not be surprised if China brought in a buddy or two. Then Europe might chip into US efforts, then Russia gets nervous (and we all know what happens when Russia gets nervous).

A. Unlike Poland, Taiwan is a tiny little island.
B. Unlike Germany, China is a nuclear superpower.

True, and regular appeasement doesn't work. In addition to your suggestion of not giving US weapons to Taiwan I'm proposing evacuation, a new capital for their government elsewhere, an empty victory for the aggressor.

Thats a valid perspective.

Doesn't it strike one as being peculiar that both Russia and China together almost simultaneously had made strategic military build-ups and shows of force out in the open?

Ματαιοδοξία ματαιοδοξιών! Όλα είναι ματαιοδοξία.
Not us but China which is expansionist.

They are playing our (economic) game and winning. So of course they are growing and that will include their military to protect their assets around the world - just as we have done. We have nearly 1000 bases in over 80 countries. They have nothing like that, just a handful in fact. China is mainly exerting their growing power through the 'belt and road initiative', as you surely know. Anyway, my point simply being that if one looks at who is trying to control the globe it has been us. It is inevitable that they will dominate their corner of the world, certainly Taiwan.
