Bernie wants murderers, rapists, and thieves to vote for him. Among others.....

What? !??!!!

Not being able to vote while being incarcerated is now considered as inhumane treatment?

While discussing what is not treating others as
"human" we might discuss what sort of felonies
get people locked up, what they did to others.

We could start with defrauding retirees out of
their savings, go thro' drug dealing, assault
etc and blah, and consider just how humane
all of that was.

Sounds like it was a quote from a response to a question, so not necessarily a major platform plank, but it's refreshing to hear a politician suggest that citizens - ALL citizens - should have the full rights of citizenship.

... especially how imprisonment has been used in the US as a way to disproportionately disenfranchise minorities.
So it's all a racial thing. That's a relief. Good thing Bernie exposed that then.

And here I was thinking all the while, people were put in prison because they do a crime.

The people with the most influence over lawmakers tend to be the same people who can afford to repeatedly break the law without consequence.

I understand what you are saying here but I have to disagree. The citizens (in general) ultimately have all the power for one simple reason. If the govt becomes too corrupt, and stops serving us, we can replace it. It is a principle this country was founded on.

Probably not the best way to address a systemic issue to argue that those who have taken away the rights of others should be privileged with those rights themselves. However, i would support ensuring that those who have paid their debt to society have a pathway back to their voting privileges. We do not want to create a caste of undeservables.

Between the punishing conservatives and the forgiving liberals is the middle path...

Last I knew, "no taxation without representation" was a rally cry for war. If you don't want them to vote, make them tax exempt as compensation. It is their right to do so, after all.

They're being punished for a serious crime.
We could even increase their tax rate.

Are you one who feels that all such rights are
absolute and universal, not to be denied anyone
under any circumstances. for any length of time?

Since you brought it up, plz tell us what it means
to "treat people like people".

It means to treat people with much more decency than you advocate, for instance.

Murderers and rapists should lose those rights indefinitely unless proven innocent later on. Maybe even those who refuse vaccinations. But we need to draw lines even in authoritarian thinking. There's always the next group that doesn't deserve rights for some thought crime that people want out.

No. However there are no grounds for stripping them their right to vote, such as is reasonable to strip the right to own a gun from those found guilty of a violent crime. Since America's sovereignty the trend has definitely been a shift towards becoming more democratic.
Ultimately, inmates have done nothing to be stripped of their right to vote. They are still citizens, they still pay taxes, and they should still have a voice.
