So how does it stay afloat? How does it resist being blown over in a gale, or toppled by rough seas? What stops it from capsizing if the ship is forced to make a sharp turn?

Let's remember that it is also burdened with the weight of 3,500 passengers and all their luggage. Not to mention the food required to keep them sated, the thousands of tables and chairs in restaurants, bars and theatres, beds, bathrooms, the swimming pools, the marble-clad atrium, the lifts, and everything else required to service a floating hotel.

But, despite all of those things and more, the vessel is full of air. Imagine a bowling ball and a beach ball side by side. Drop them in the sea and the beach ball will float, high in the water.

Let’s dispel another myth before starting to look at the physics.

Although the size of a ship is calculated on its tonnage, this is a measure of volume rather than weight. It is defined by the ship’s enclosed internal space.

A ship’s weight is measured by the amount of water it displaces. Royal Princess, for example, is 142,714 gross tonnes, and while sister ship Majestic Princess is almost the same size it measures 143,000 gross tons for the simple reason that there is a glass roof covering one of its swimming pools.

............
Now, the physics. A cruise ship displaces an amount of water equivalent to its own mass. The pressure of the sea pushes up against the vessel’s hull to counter the downward force of the ship’s mass. Unlike air, water cannot be compressed, so the combined forces create buoyancy.

It’s basically the principle discovered when Archimedes took a bath 2,300 years ago and ran naked through the streets of Syracuse in celebration.

The water a cruise ship displaces becomes the waves and wash it creates as it moves along. A rounded U-shaped hull is preferable for creating buoyancy; some ships are flat-bottomed and while they still float, they are likely to move uncomfortably in heavy seas.

[This should clear up a few misguided ideas hopefully.]

Any more objections? Try this.

What the video says are not mine.
Did you have a point?

You do not seem to understand that no one has said that an under-laden boat would float. We are talking about why it would fail once it was floating.

Please note that a cruise ship.is made out of steel using the latest engineering technology. You are trying to claim that a wooden boat, without any means of stabilization, could survive the worst storms our planet has ever seen.

All that is nice. But none of that fixes the problem with long wooden planks that HAVE to be the sides of the ark.

Those planks? WILL FLEX. When they flex? GAPS FORM.

Gaps that let water in-- THIS IS COMMON TO ALL WOODEN BOATS LARGER THAN ROWBOATS.

The ark would sink from incoming seawater within a half hour-- this figure was arrived at by the US Navy's giant wave simulator.

So it matters little if your hollow wooden box floats or not.

But the FACT IS? If you put enough animals in there to represent EVERY species?

JUST THE INSECTS ALONE WOULD FILL IT SO DENSE IT WOULD SINK LIKE A ROCK.

Nevermind anything else...

You may not believe it, yet you claim that he is. As I said you do not understand how you are making that claim. All of the evidence out there tells us that there was no flood. I can only think of one possible source for that evidence if the flood myth is true. Your God would have had to have planted false information. So by you claiming that "The Flood is real" it also follows that you are claiming that God planted false evidence, a form of lying. Most Christians do not believe that God lied, that is only one reason that most Christians do not appear to believe the Noah's Ark myth.

Could you show where false evidence was planted?

You are merely speculating.
You have a picture in your mind that is simply imagination - not the Bible, which never described long wooden planks.
Does anyone ever build anything with long wooden planks? What... and how many men did it take to hold the plank? Help me see what you are imagining, because right now it sounds weird.

Where did you read that, other than from your head?

"Everything else" is against the arguments of you guys.
We are discussing the flood aren't we?
Then deal with it.

I have one more for you guys.

Why post videos from a source that openly admits that they are dishonest?

We all know large ships made of wooden planks can't stay afloat. But wait, what were the ships in the days of the Vikings, Christopher Columbus, and Pirates made from? Surely not wooden planks.

You are saying that you are totally without any education in geology or biology. How about the total lack of a worldwide population bottleneck? The flood myth predicts that one would exist and yet it is missing.

Thank you for calling me uneducated. I have never said that I possess any amazing intellectual abilities, but it is always nice to be reminded to keep me humble.

I would think the flood myth would not rely on it as much as evolution would. Not that I am making a case for evolution, but I would think evolution would rely on such an event. Wouldn't that explain the lack transitional species? Or how about the fact that Cheetahs are said to have had a population bottleneck around 10,000 years ago that reduced their numbers to 7.

Another person that does not understand the square/cube law. Yes, smaller ships can be made of wood and be stable. Larger ships cannot be since the material used is nowhere near as strong as needed.

Don't give me that nonsense. You may be educated, but you are not educated in the sciences. If you are willing to learn I am willing to help you. But you need to promise to be honest. That means facing the evidence and accepting it even if it refutes the myth that you believe in. Most literalists chicken out sooner or later when it begins to be obvious to them that they are wrong.

And I gave you evidence. Can you deal with it properly? That means no sources that reject the scientific method. You can't refute scientific concepts without using information found using the scientific method.

Once again, why use lying sources? When a source disables comments on a concept that is supposedly debatable they are as much as admitting that they are lying.

I suggest you research large wooden ships.

Do you consider this a small wooden ship?

The longest wooden ship ever built was the six-masted New England gaff schooner Wyoming. It had a "total length" of 137 metres (449 ft) (measured from tip of jib boom (30 metres) to tip of spanker boom (27 metres) and a "length on deck" of 107 m (351 ft).

Actually I consider it a large wooden ship and it is an excellent example of what happens when people do not pay attention to the square/cube law. Tell me, what happened to that ship which was equipped with powered bilge pumps and had the benefit of steel reinforcing in key areas?

By the way, "length of deck" makes that considerably smaller than the Ark.

To me the answer is a rectangular building does Not have to be steered anywhere.
Noah's Ark did Not have to be steered as a boat needs to steered. The only thing the Ark had to do was float.
WRONG!

How Ships Survive a Hurricane at Sea
Steering-way means that the ship is moving forward with enough power to steer rather than just getting pushed around by waves and wind. The ship must keep its bow (the front end) pointing into the waves to plow through them safely, since a massive wave striking the ship's side could roll the vessel over and sink it.
If you have no means of power and no means of steering you are going to get hit broadside by waves. If you get hit broadside by waves you are going to capsize.

OK, I guess I missed it. What evidence did you give me? You say "Why would I believe in a God that lies?" I asked to be shown where. And you posted this.

I find an insult, a question and a statement. None of which proves God lies or even an explanation of why it would. My view of a 'worldwide population bottleneck' helps prove an extinction event.

But you seem to put your faith in the scientific method. Why don't you explain that to me.

How could you miss the evidence? The flood myth predicts a worldwide population bottleneck in all species. It is not there. That alone refutes the flood. How and why did God cover up that evidence?

And I respect the scientific method because it produces real results. We could not be communicating right now without it.

Why not? That’s what you’re giving. Every time you say you “understand the evidence”.
That’s interesting, because even PhD geologists and paleontologists cant agree on even the interpretation of the Pleistocene megafaunal extinction evidence!

NOVA | Megabeasts' Sudden Death | The Extinction Debate | PBS

Yet it fits what would result from the Noachian Flood, perfectly! (With the 'greenhouse effect' -- the warmer climate before the Flood -- gone instantaneously.)

But science can't accept any interpretation that allows for metaphysical explanations.

That is science's problem...stay in the dark.

Funny that the Father of the scientific method, Sir Francis Bacon, had no problem accepting it.

I didn't claim it was the size of the ark. I'm not sure it had any steel in it.
I think the ark story is a myth but you missed the point of my post. It, along with Viking ships, Columbus ships, pirate ships, pilgrim ships, etc are definitely bigger than a "row boat".
