When did/do you get saved?

Heneni

Miss Independent
There is the premise that somebody gets saved when they say the sinners prayer. Do you believe that is when you are saved?

If not...why not
If yes...why yes.

I was saved when I made the decision to follow Christ.

You can pray continously but if there's no meaning behind your words, it means nothing.

I believe that if I "endure to the end," I will be saved. I believe that because it's what a Bible says. Meanwhile, I have the promise of salvation because I have entered into a covenant relationship with Jesus Christ. The terms of that covenant state that I obey His commandments and repent whenever I fall short. In return, He will forgive me and be my advocate with the Father.

If a person prays a "sinners prayer" they are either affirming something that they have recently come to accept or they are suggesting something that they would like to be true. Either way, the "sinner's prayer" is not a turning point in PERSONAL BELIEF.

Now, if salvation hinges on a conversation with an actual God, then prayer would be the only method. However, if salvation hinges on personal belief, prayer would be only a ceremony. I am more inclined to believe that everything that matters in this world depends on whether or not we pray TO GOD, because if he is real, then he listens to what you say and everything revolves on appeal to that God.

Personal belief can change, which is why some people THINK themselves to be Christians but then turn away from the "idea of God" in hypocrisy.

for me, it was not specifically a sinner's prayer that saved me.

i did pray, after isha prayers, while still a Muslim. the "sinner's prayer" is one way to accepting Christ, but many, many people have become Christians other ways.

in many of the cases i've read, though, personal prayer does play the key role in the person's recieving God's grace, and new life, in Christ.

Saved from what? That never was made very clear to me.

saved from spiritual thirst, spiritual darkness, my seperation from God, saved from sin, from my own ignorance, and saved from the long and tiring struggle to "get it" on my own.

saved by faith in Christ, and in living a new life with Him as my Master, and Saviour.

When am part of the whole and not knowing what SIN is there is no question of being saved or not saved.

First, I'm happy for you. ^_^

But as for me...

My spiritual thirst can be quenched by learning about wisdom and philosophy. Same with lighting the spiritual darkness. I don't really want to be close to a god. I can't be saved from sin, nor do I want to be. I am "saved" from ignorance by learning about the world with an open mind.

I don't need a single man to die for me to learn that.

Paying the consequences is what allows me to learn and grow stronger. If I never pay the consequences, I won't get anywhere.
Agreed. I believe that learning the difference between good and evil -- and specifically learning to choose good instead of evil -- is essential to our growth and development. I was actually thinking of more long-term consequences but time today is limited and so I'll have to pass on elaborating for now.

Well this is how i see it. You are not saved when you 'accept' jesus. You dont 'accept' jesus at some point in your life.

You are saved if, on the cross, jesus put you IN him.

So hence you were saved on the cross. Not when you say the sinners prayer.

You dont get saved when you say the sinners prayer. What you DO do, is testify to the fact that he is your saviour...thereby becoming a WITNESS to the fact that you ARE saved, and that the saving happened on the cross.

On the cross, he translated you out of the kingdom of darkness where you were (yes you existed before you were born) and translated you into the kingdom of light. Since you were then in the kingdom of light (paradise, with the thief crucified with jesus), you are born from above onto this planet.

You are therefore, incarnated onto this earth from above. Jesus was the first to be born from above, and we are in turn also born from above. That birth..is called...being born again. Born by the will and design of god and not by the desire of your parents. They are just the vehicle to get you here.

Your date of birth is not when you popped out of your mother...that was your date of re-entry.

I agree. When one lives in the light that shines from within, words lose their meaning.

well... certainly salvation for a Christian and a non-Christian will mean very different things. understanding gained from living, traveling, and learning from others is good, and useful, and imo a better way to spend one's life than being self-occupied or uninterested in the world.

but for a Christian, salvation comes not from what one does or understands, but from the gift of One sent by God and of God, a unique and Living Saviour, sent by God to teach us and save us. His perspective and understanding surpasses anything i could have attampted to grasp, however earnestly or open-mindedly, is i'd have moved through life.

certainly our own perspective on our own lives shapes how much one gets out of life. but the reconciliation between God and self, for a Christian, is a gift of grace, not a point arrived at or realized over time.

Why do we make the "goal" of the Christian life all about "me?" It's about servitude.
A better question for the OP might be, "When did we see you hungry and feed you, naked and clothe you...?"
IMO, that's when "we're saved," because that's when we buy into the God who lives within our relationships with others.
