Your Musical Dislikes...

blackout

Violet.
What styles/genres of music do you tend to dislike the most and Why?

Please be as specific as you can about the 'Why's'.
As a musician, I'm very curious about people's perceptions
of what they hear, and how music is labeled,
and as well, what people specifically do and DON'T like to hear.

While the purpose of the thread is not really meant to be "debate"
(as we are talking in part about perception and personal taste)
still I invite and hope for some interactive conversation.

If your perception is different than another posters,
don't be rude, but feel free to state why. :cover:

People can be very protective of 'their' music. ;):D

Ok, I'll start with a negative musical perception that I have.

Country music is too whiny, from the vocal style to the lyrics.
Usually the sound of it just says either "whiny" or "hick' to me,:sorry1:
and then I turn it off before even giving it more than 10 seconds
to (possibly) show me otherwise.
I bypass country music on the radio automatically,
on the basis of my own style stereo-type. ;)

I will say though that I do like Taylor Swift.
I guess you could call her "country pop" ?
She doesn't whine. Her voice is clear and not all "draaawnnn",
her lyrics are usually cute and uplifting,
minimal "twang" and none of that "stompin" beat.
Her style of country, doesn't feel all... "country".
(and bonus points for no mention of pick-up trucks and cowboy hats...) :areyoucra

So here's something about mySelf I just thought,
both country music and the blues often
revolve lyrically around a person's "problems".

But I love the cry of an electric guitar,
the wail of blues organ,
and just the blues scale
and alternate blues progressions in general.
It' cries and can be dark.... like Zeppelin's "Since I've been Lovin' You" (rock)
or the solo's can sizzle like "Wess and James Blues". (jazz-Wess Montgomery and Jimmy Smith).
Blues transcends style really.

I guess the difference is
Blues Cries,
Country Whines. :p

One last thought on the topic of "country music" for now.
I've been mostly speaking of what I hear on mainstream radio.

I'm not sure I'd really count this as "country music",
but I hear some majorly firey bluegrass from time to time,
on "public" or college radio.
Even though I haven't run out and bought any,
I DO appreciate it when I hear it.
Both the higher levels of musicianship and energy.
I almost always like engaging improvisation,
whatever the style really.

To me it's bluegrass though. Not country.

I'm not a big fan of Hip Hop. I can appreciate the talent, but for me I don't get the 'rap scene' and can't understand half of what they say. I think when I was younger all I head of rap was the violence in the lyrics, and that's stayed with me. Also, it's seems to be all about bling - money, naked women and cars... not really my thing :D

The music and hip hop culture seem to mix to me!!

Country music might be rubbish. But you've got to love Johnny Cash.

My No.1 dislike is music that has the tinny sound. A lot of Michal Jacksons music is a good example.

I tend to like "quazi" rap more than ... I guess hip-hop rap.
Though I do like hip-hop beats in general,
they have more potential than what they're generally used for I think.

I have no you tube links from where I am,
but I like relaxed spoken "quazi rap"
like "I"m a loser baby, so why don't you kill me"
and
"Short skirt and a Long jacket".
Kesha does some "spoken" stuff like
in "tik-tok" and "your love is my drug"
it's maybe a "pop rap" kinda thing?

And I do like eminem.
He speaks clearly,
he's humorous,
and I just love the sound of his voice.
I dunno why, he makes me laugh
even when he's talking about really the most awful stuff. :D
Eminem is the only official rapper that gets played
with any regularity in my house.
(mostly by my son, but the rest of us don't mind it) ;)

I agree with you though in general,
I don't like the gangster/hoodlem/bling king, cultural rap stuff either.
Often I find it demeaning,
or just plain stupid...
bling - money, naked women and cars
IF you can even manage to understand what they're saying.
(and usually it seems, it's not worth the effort)

Not that I mind naked women and cars and money... :flirt:
but these people seem to LIVE in CLUBS!
It's a 24/7 pick up party.
Then in between they're cheatin' on each other.
Gettin' caught, and making empty promises
till next weekend, when they do it all again.
It's a viscious (and boring) cycle.

I can understand what Eminem goes on about! I just looked on YouTube at some songs of other rappers - understand a couple of words :D

But, yeah it can come across as demeaning at times, that's one thing I don't like about the rock culture - I LOVE rock music, but not so much the PlayBoy Bunnies.

Could you expand on what you mean by "the tinny sound" Stephen?
Be as specific as possible?

What IS it about Micheal Jackson? specifically.
Is it the voice? the mixing? the synth bass?
Can you try to get at just what it is, that makes it "tinny" to your ear?

Or maybe put forth some other specific examples of "tinny" music.

It's whatever is making a sound along the lines of a drum. But not a drum. Sounds like when someone sets a drum on a keyboard.

*GASP!* Michael was an amazing performer and his music is fantastic. :p

It's kind of hard to say. I'm not a huge fan of Country. My reasons are the same as most people on here. I do love Garth Brooks though... and Johnny Cash. Anything else is just ugh... One of my co-workers made a joke one day about how all Country singers sing about are trucks, hay, and farming. haha

I also am not a huge fan of screamo. The beat to the music is usually okay with me but when the singer starts screaming... that's when I just can not listen to it. You can't understand what they say and their voices give me the worst headache. It's obnoxious to me. I do need to clarify that it depends on the screamo... some of the screaming is too... throaty and loud. If that makes any sense. It's hard to describe.

Okay... the final dislike... Rap... All the rappers tend to sing about is sex, strippers, money, bling, and sex. It's disgusting and somewhat disrespectful to me.

Took the words right out of my mouth

I'm also not a fan of Emo since I find the singer's voice invariably ruins what can occasionally be a good beat. It's just far too whiny for me, If I have a problem I like a good mosh to get it out of my system, not to sit there moping about it.

Any 90's pop makes me choke. I grew up in the 90's thinking I didn't like music at all, it was only when I saw Marilyn Manson's "tainted love" video that I found a genre I liked.

Finally I cannot stand teeny pop. Jonas Brothers, Justin Bieber etc. As far as I'm concerned, if you're a 13 year old girl you can be forgiven for liking them, but when I see people in their 20's with a Jonas Brothers poster on their wall I just want to punch them.

It was on fire when I laid down on it.
I despise most rap (though not all of it) and dislike the whole "gangsta" culture.

At the risk of sounding unsophisticated (imagine that!), I also dislike the sort of jazz that seems totally random and disjointed. Note that I didn't say I dislike ALL jazz - some of it I really, really groove on. For instance, I really love acid jazz and any sort of jazz that's African-influenced. I guess you could say I prefer "hot" jazz to "cool" jazz.

I HATE most contemporary classical music. HATE IT HATE IT HATE IT. When it comes to classical music, my cutoff is generally around the 1890s, with my favorites being baroque and eastern European romantics.

I absolutely love bluegrass. It's got to be some of the most fun music to listen to. I love the music of the second British invasion (the 1980s). I find that I like just about any sort of music that is "tight," - by that I mean layered, complex, and structured as opposed to a "random" sort of feel. I appreciate good lyrics and artistic structure within a piece - that's why I like U2, Mozart, Cake, Brad Paisley, and Earth Wind and Fire, just to name a few various artists and styles which have those components in common.

On the topic of country music - I used to absolutely HATE country music. I mean, hate it with a passion. Then I met my husband, who introduced me to George Strait, and I jumped into and really explored the country music genre. I was very pleasantly surprised and now I count several country music artists and groups among my favorites - George Strait (of course), Brad Paisley (light but witty entertainment!), Allison Kraus just to name a few.

When it comes to lyrics and poignancy, I think this song is fantastic:

YouTube - George Strait - The Chair - Live From Tucson

For humor, this particular country music song is great! Brad Paisley's "Alcohol!"

I can make anybody pretty
I can make you believe any lie
I can make you pick a fight
with somebody twice
your size. . .

Well I've been known to cause a few breakups
and I've been known to cause a few births
I can make you new friends
Or get you fired from work.

(Chorus)
And since the day I left Milwaukee
Lynchburg, Bordeaux, France
Been makin the bars
With lots of big money
and helpin white people dance
I got you in trouble in high school
and college now that was a ball
you had some of the best times
you'll never remember with me
Alcohol, Alcohol

I got blamed at your wedding reception
for your best man's emberrasing speech
and also for those naked pictures of you at the beach
I've influenced kings and world leaders
I helped Hemingway write like he did
and I`ll bet you a drink or two that I can make you
put that lampshade on your head . .

And since the day I left Milwaukee
Lynchburg, Bordeaux, France
Been makin a fool out of folks
just like you
and helpin white people dance
I am medicine and I am poison
I can help you up or make you fall
you had some of the best times
you'll never remember with me
Alcohol

And since the day I left Milwaukee
Lynchburg, Bordeaux, France
Been makin the bars
With lots of big money
(crowd:) and helpin white people dance
I got you in trouble in high school
and college now that was a ball
you had some of the best times
you'll never remember with me
Alcohol, Alcohol

By the way - Taylor Swift does mention trucks in her songs! LOL

"Just a boy in a Chevy truck
That had a tendency of gettin' stuck
On backroads at night"

"I hate that stupid old pickup truck
You never let me drive
You're a redneck, heartbreak
Who's really bad at lying"

As for cowboys - I used to have a personal saying"

"I don't date coaches, cops, or cowboys - they don't like me and I don't like them."

Then I met my husband, who was an undercover cowboy - that is to say that on our first date, he was dressed in khakis, a nice button down shirt and what I would consider "normal" shoes and a belt. No indication whatsoever that he was a cowboy! After our first fantastic date, he went overseas for six weeks and we talked every day for hours online and on the phone - once again, with no indication that he was a cowboy. When he got back, we planned a Saturday of shopping and hanging out. He came to my house and picked me up - in a pick up truck - which had a saddle in the back seat. I made a mental note of this, but didn't say anything. Then - he said, "Before we go to the mall, I need to run by Cavenders and get some boots - mine are just about worn out." Hmmmmm, ok...work boots, maybe? No - cowboy boots. I was getting alarmed at this point! We got back in the truck (OMG!) and he reached over and turned on the stereo - George Strait. Oh my, things were reaching critical mass by now - my hair was nearly standing on end in alarm! Then he turned to me with his rakish grin and said, "Hey, you wanna go eat some BBQ?" I looked over at him and said, "Hey, wait a minute - you are sounding and acting suspiciously like a cowboy!" He grinned again and drawled, "Baby...I AM a cowboy!"

Dive in! I've never looked back! Never underestimate the charms of that particular type!

I don't dislike any genre I listen to EVERYTHING.

But I really hate the manufactured music now a days especially the soulless hip-hop and club music made with auto-tune. I'm a casual hip-hop fan but what passes for hip hop and rap now a days is a joke, it's secretly terrible pop music.
