I despise most rap (though not all of it) and dislike the whole "gangsta" culture.
At the risk of sounding unsophisticated (imagine that!), I also dislike the sort of jazz that seems totally random and disjointed. Note that I didn't say I dislike ALL jazz - some of it I really, really groove on. For instance, I really love acid jazz and any sort of jazz that's African-influenced. I guess you could say I prefer "hot" jazz to "cool" jazz.
I HATE most contemporary classical music. HATE IT HATE IT HATE IT. When it comes to classical music, my cutoff is generally around the 1890s, with my favorites being baroque and eastern European romantics.
I absolutely love bluegrass. It's got to be some of the most fun music to listen to. I love the music of the second British invasion (the 1980s). I find that I like just about any sort of music that is "tight," - by that I mean layered, complex, and structured as opposed to a "random" sort of feel. I appreciate good lyrics and artistic structure within a piece - that's why I like U2, Mozart, Cake, Brad Paisley, and Earth Wind and Fire, just to name a few various artists and styles which have those components in common.
On the topic of country music - I used to absolutely HATE country music. I mean, hate it with a passion. Then I met my husband, who introduced me to George Strait, and I jumped into and really explored the country music genre. I was very pleasantly surprised and now I count several country music artists and groups among my favorites - George Strait (of course), Brad Paisley (light but witty entertainment!), Allison Kraus just to name a few.
When it comes to lyrics and poignancy, I think this song is fantastic:

For humor, this particular country music song is great! Brad Paisley's "Alcohol!"

I can make anybody pretty
I can make you believe any lie
I can make you pick a fight
with somebody twice
your size. . .
Well I've been known to cause a few breakups
and I've been known to cause a few births
I can make you new friends
Or get you fired from work.
(Chorus)
And since the day I left Milwaukee
Lynchburg, Bordeaux, France
Been makin the bars
With lots of big money
and helpin white people dance
I got you in trouble in high school
and college now that was a ball
you had some of the best times
you'll never remember with me
Alcohol, Alcohol
I got blamed at your wedding reception
for your best man's emberrasing speech
and also for those naked pictures of you at the beach
I've influenced kings and world leaders
I helped Hemingway write like he did
and I`ll bet you a drink or two that I can make you
put that lampshade on your head . .
And since the day I left Milwaukee
Lynchburg, Bordeaux, France
Been makin a fool out of folks
just like you
and helpin white people dance
I am medicine and I am poison
I can help you up or make you fall
you had some of the best times
you'll never remember with me
Alcohol
And since the day I left Milwaukee
Lynchburg, Bordeaux, France
Been makin the bars
With lots of big money
(crowd
and helpin white people dance
I got you in trouble in high school
and college now that was a ball
you had some of the best times
you'll never remember with me
Alcohol, Alcohol
By the way - Taylor Swift does mention trucks in her songs! LOL
"Just a boy in a Chevy truck
That had a tendency of gettin' stuck
On backroads at night"
"I hate that stupid old pickup truck
You never let me drive
You're a redneck, heartbreak
Who's really bad at lying"
As for cowboys - I used to have a personal saying"
"I don't date coaches, cops, or cowboys - they don't like me and I don't like them."
Then I met my husband, who was an undercover cowboy - that is to say that on our first date, he was dressed in khakis, a nice button down shirt and what I would consider "normal" shoes and a belt. No indication whatsoever that he was a cowboy! After our first fantastic date, he went overseas for six weeks and we talked every day for hours online and on the phone - once again, with no indication that he was a cowboy. When he got back, we planned a Saturday of shopping and hanging out. He came to my house and picked me up - in a pick up truck - which had a saddle in the back seat. I made a mental note of this, but didn't say anything. Then - he said, "Before we go to the mall, I need to run by Cavenders and get some boots - mine are just about worn out." Hmmmmm, ok...work boots, maybe? No - cowboy boots. I was getting alarmed at this point! We got back in the truck (OMG!) and he reached over and turned on the stereo - George Strait. Oh my, things were reaching critical mass by now - my hair was nearly standing on end in alarm! Then he turned to me with his rakish grin and said, "Hey, you wanna go eat some BBQ?" I looked over at him and said, "Hey, wait a minute - you are sounding and acting suspiciously like a cowboy!" He grinned again and drawled, "Baby...I AM a cowboy!"
Dive in! I've never looked back! Never underestimate the charms of that particular type!
