Who killed all those babies?

one of the evidences that the biblical god is either not omniscient, not omnipotent, or not omnibenevolent.

if god is omniscient, he will know that there will be a massive slaughter of infants. If he knows it but can't prevent it, he is not omnipotent. If he knows it and can prevent it, but did not, he is not omnibenevolent.

First: Is there any proof, other than the bible, that says at X period of time Pontius Pilate ordered the death of all children 2 years and younger and if it did occur.
Second: The Roman Empire was really not on good standing with Parthia(where the Magi would probably came from if this account is accurate). Why would the Magi even care or even hear about the "birth" of a Jewish messiah. Why would the Parthian Empire even care about a Jewish messiah. At this time who was proclaiming that a Jewish messiah had been born. Supposedly it was only from the Magi, the Jewish population sure wasn't going around proclaiming a "messiah" had been born.
Third: What reason would Pontius Pilate have to do this. Pilate was a "pagan"(not Jewish) and could care less what the Jewish population believed or did not believe. As long as the Jewish population continued to pay their "taxes" to him and Rome they could do what they wanted. Do you really think that Rome was worried about a Jewish King (look what happened around 70CE when the riots got out of hand).

This account of killing babies is seriously at doubt.

I dislike flavius Josephus as a historian. Josephus who written a fair deal about herod the great, and included many sorlid details about herod's life fail to mention a single about the slaughter of baby boys in Bethlehem.

Luke who supposedly got most of materials about jesus' birth from Mary also make no mention of this event.

Why is that?

Because it never happened.

I would just put it down to early Christian propaganda.

Well, it's apparently tallied from the Bible, though I haven't gone through the Book with a counter. It is pretty clear though, that the OT God was pretty bloodthirsty and emotional.
As to weather the Bible can be considered a reliable source, that's a whole other thread.

True, the Romans wouldn't care about any Jewish king or messiah. The Romans had many kings in their empire, known as client kings. These kings have certain autonomy.
