I don't see why we need 'this' and 'that'. Too much redundancy. We should just take the first two letters from one of the words, and the last two from the other, and combine them into an uberword to cover both.
So...lessee...we could obviously take the first two from either of them...so we're left with two options;

'this' or 'that'

See how much simpler that makes things?

In ASL, to say "this" you just point to the thing you're talking about. Simple but effective, haha.
