I just about remember Watergate although I remember he was obviously guilty,69 people were indicted and 48 convicted, obviously guilty he faced impeachment,of those convicted many were top officials yet the head honcho was allowed to walk away and even pardoned by Ford for crimes he may have committed against the USA o_O.

Fast forward to today,it’s not looking good for Trump now, according to poles 60% of Americans see him as guilty including some republicans and if he were to stand trial are there, like Nixon, be 69 butt clenching republicans fearing indictment?,or will he get away with it and even run for Potus again?.

Why doesn't Trump move to Milan? I mean, his wife can enjoy her beloved Slovenia...so people in America are more relieved...I mean...;)

Our system is good, but far from perfect. Trump was tried twice. He is the only President to have ever have been impeached twice. But his own party is extremely corrupt in supporting him and there is not anything we can do about it. In Trump's first trial he was easily impeached in the House of Representatives, but the trial is in the Senate, and the Senate was controlled by Republicans. They did not even allow the presentation of evidence. Now that is pure corruption. They did not allow the presentation of any evidence and the excuse that many Republicans gave for voting not guilty was "No evidence":confused:o_O

A civilian trial will probably be no different. All it takes is one die hard Trump supporter slipping through into the jury box and they could have a hung jury. Here we need all 12 jurors to vote guilty to convict someone. We would likely have hung jury after hung jury.

The Watergate break-in happened the week I graduated from high school. The next two years were consumed with newspaper and magazine articles, news broadcast coverage, the hearings (providing major TV exposure and public recognition for Sam Ervin and Howard Baker), etc. The hearings were riveting and the roll call of the judiciary committee voting whether to send articles of impeachment to the full House was momentous.

I figure there is zero chance that current high school and college students would slog through all that. But it would be nice if they would all at least watch All the President's Men.

That’s really sad but if that’s how it works it is what it is I guess.

I now. It sucks. His guilt is rather obvious to any person that can reason but he is still apt to walk. I think that is why that various courts are not prosecuting him yet. They are realists too and they are probably still looking for stronger evidence. If it was anyone else it would have gone to trial a long time ago.

Was watergate and failure to bring Nixon to justice a reason why Trump happened?

An argument can certainly be made for that.

But the really scary thing is what will a failure to bring Trump to justify lead to next?

It is extremely short sighted by the Republicans. Who knows? Maybe the next charismatic dogmatist will be from the liberal side. What happens if the same sort of Teflon President is elected again but now he wants to turn the US into a socialist paradise?

BTW we too have politicians so bare faced lied on WOMD like Tony Blair,he was hoping for a peerage but turned down so they gave him a knighthood instead, letting politicians get away with unacceptable behaviour is a trend.

No Watergate had nothing to do with the 2016 election.
What put Trump into the White House was the dissatisfaction of the voters with the costal Democratic party elite who they viewed as economically and culturally out of touch with their needs—found Trump's populist, protectionist rhetoric spoke directly to them and that dissatifaction continues to grow every year.

I don't think Watergate had anything to do with it, but I suppose anything is possible.

Although on that subject, I would note that during Reagan's Teflon presidency, he got away with Iran-Contra with hardly even an unkind word from the press.

Extremism is always shortsighted. There's little thinking, patience or research going on in those spheres. It's all knee-jerk reactions.
